it is songs like these that transcend countries and borders and cultures. I live in the US and have absolutely no connection with India other than the fact that my parents were avid bollywood fans (which passed on to us) and this song makes me feel like I actually belonged to that era when in reality, this movie came out almost 15 years before I was even born. what a composition, great cast, great singing by perhaps the two best singers who ever lived. I am no expert into the film industry so my answer to your query may sound simplistic so here goes - in my opinion three factors are to blame. 1. It's now too commercialised so it's all about making money. 2. All new faces are somehow related to existing actors and actresses or directors etc ie insiders only so no new talent is comming in and 3. too much emphasis on artificiality including beauty and story lines. Even remakes of old succesful classics have been screwed up.
