Thanks for posting! I remember watching this. You'd think they were collecting the whole set of perfect scores from the judges. This is the zenith of ice dancing. Torvill and Dean were robbed in their Olympic comeback.
This is phenomenal and it is so beautiful. As a Brit this means so much to me and i adore Jayne & Chris - a gold medal just doesn't cut it. Torvill & Dean are my inspiration, i love them.
This is phenomenal and it is so beautiful. As a Brit this means so much to me and i adore Jayne & Chris - a gold medal just doesn't cut it. Torvill & Dean are my inspiration, i love them.
I just realized there are no twizzles; I guess this wasn't a required element back then? And look at all the flowers they used to get! I guess it's more efficient to get runners to pick up all that stuff now, but it's so much more compelling when the skaters themselves leave the ice with their arms loaded with gifts.
I had to look at it again. We have a new Torville & Dean. They are Canada's Virtue & Moir who just won GOLD in Vancouver. They too are artistic and wonderful and so was their routine!
That still has to be the best pairs ever - i rember seeing them live - absolutely awesome and risk takers that you just dont see in the Winter olympics now.
this is the best ice dance ever - you say torvill and dean to any english person and the first thing they will say is Bolero. it is the most beautiful and specatular pieces of ice dancing i have ever seen and as far as im concern Jayne and Chris need to be honoured and made Kinght Commander and Dame Commander of the British Empire. anything less is just a slap in the face
There are people still saying that this is not a high technical level program. I think they are mistaken. What happens is that Dean and Torvil made this performance look easy. If you watch carefully you will realize that not few of their movements had not only originality but also difficulty. I believe that this is the best ice dancing performance ever that combines perfectly the technical elements with artistry.
I've just watched this and I haven't seen it for years. I'm not an avid fan of ice skating but I wanted to see this because there was a programme on ITV today and it triggered a memory. It gave me goosebumps at the Olympics and it still does now. Well done JT and CD! Just brilliant.
Did you know that olympic rules state that a skating piece must last no less than 3 mins 50secs and no longer than 4 mins 10 secs. The music for this piece lasts 4 mins 28 secs. The rules decree that the performance starts from the moment the blades touch the ice to get round that neither Jayne nor Chris' skate blades touch the ice for the first 18 secs. Check it out.
this is a true thing that happens! its not a chain letter! its kinda scary at first but it really works!! paste this message into 3 comments and press ALT F4 and your crushes name will appear on the screen!!! its soo wierd!
Ahazzar - I'm from Derby originally - they were from the next town over - Nottingham. I saw their winning performance live on TV - a thrill of a lifetime!!! Because of my interest in ice-skating I've got my 9 yr old Grand-daughter involved - She loves it!!! She is having one on one lessons and is soon to get into competitions. Fortunately we have a rink 5 mins from our house.
I am a fan of ABBA thru to Slipknot, Mozart (OOh that Moonlight Sonata) to Metallica ( I Disappear..do I need to say anymore!) but... this moves me to tears everytime I watch it. Thank you Torvill and Dean for sheer drama and utter perfection not just on ice, but anywhere. This is a part of my personal history that I truly treasure, as I remember watching the final with my mom and dad. Thank you jaxomsyd for posting x
tichwood it is unusual to get americans finding them brilliant,i am only 20 and i missed the best years I find this faultless never seen anything like this since.I watch them all the time on dancing on ice you might not have it there.best one was to john lennon imagine on season 2 watch it if you can they are still magig
I love that! I think it is the best ice performance Ever!!! I was not alive when they did it live but this is the 1st time ive watched it!!!! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!
they were doing so well until he beat her up and they both fell over at the end ! HaHa only Kidding. That performance was, still is and always will be LEGENDARY
I love the end, what a climax! I wonder what the move is called where he tosses her around like that just before they collapse?! Bloody heartstopping!
some people would pay money 2 see them perform again, we get 2 see them every sunday on dancing on ice! 4 free! how lucky are we! how proud 2b british. i'm in awe.
Torvill and Dean's Bolero at the 84 Olympics defined "exquisite" for me. I had recorded it, but lost the recording. Thanks to all who posted this masterpiece to You Tube, so that I may watch again and again.
now that is what you can call the very very very best in the world. i dont think we wil ever see another jane and chris again.even to this day they are great in danceing on ice on itv. we are very lucky in the uk we see the skate every week on telly.
Apparently they couldn't condense Bolero down to less than four minutes, twenty-eight seconds, but were only allowed four minutes, ten seconds from the moment their blades touched the ice, and that's where the beginning sequence comes from. But yep, they're genii (plural of genius).
The ending had to be edited. All through the routine it was showing olympic rings on the advertsing boards and at the end they changed to canon, SPAR, owena etc. How else do you explain it?
Thnx for posting the greatest ice dance ever the haunting Bolero music brought to life by Torvill and Dean just awesome.Still enjoying watching them on Dancing on ice.
The final sequence of this video is not the '84 Olympics. It's been cut from the European's in '84. Torvill & Dean changed the ending slighting by both of them reaching out and looking up once they hit the ice.

No-one has managed to come up to the standard of T & D's program since this, not saying this as just a fan of their work..but other skaters have tried to better the choreography and haven't. It's so fluid and perfect, it's like skating is second nature.
They simply performed flawlessly, so they deserved the points. And perfectly synchronized, I have never seen another couple perform so exact. Simply everything ice dancing should be- elegant and with such presence. Just amazing !!
still very moving ive not watched this for 23 years love it love it love it.i remember the whole of britian supporting them and watching them on tv no matter what time of day it was
What's so legendary about it... I suppose at that time this was an awesome performance, but today's athletes are sooooo much better... Ice dancing is so much more difficult and challenging and not to forget entertaining today, than it ever was in 1984.
I was actually replying to the comment that said it doesn't compare to today's dances. Bolero is the best ice dance ever, today's competitors can't better it.
love this! i agree that ice dancing is much more difficult and challenging today.and the reason for that is? torvill and dean! especially this performance.they changed ice dancing forever!!
I agree with all of you. I said what I said based on today's perspective. I was an infant in 1984, so I don't remember what was there before Torvill and Dean. And also, I give them credit for what they did and do not try to reduce their accomplishment. Personally I love Marina Anisina and her partner (husband) whose name I don't dare to spell... :)
If you watch their current routines, they are now in their forties but they are still flawless and they can use more difficulty and do. They can now mix in pairs work with lifts and jumps. In 2006, I saw couples still trying to be the new Torvill and Dean because the sport needs it. It is now back to a minority sport, compared to others on ice.
The set the bar for the standard of Ice Dance, they drew attention to in, were as in the Ice Skating programme at any competion it was the poor sister, the event people didn't watch compared to Pairs or the figure skating.
They changed the approach to the original progamme and their lines and perfection are still something to emulate.
Brilliant. I remember 10 years later, during the civil war in Yugoslavia, ABC juxtaposing this performance in 1984 with Sarajevo during the war, the bombed out Olympic Village and freshly dug graves inside the ice arena. That was chilling. I wish I could see that again.
Chris and Jayne did Bolero at the 1994 Olympic ice Skating Gala to highlight the situation in Sarajevo and to pay tribute to the war torn city, that was the place that they won ten years before. It felt like they were saying this is what is really important, not us.
Wonderful!! I was 10 when they performed this, and have never ever forgotten. I've wanted to see this for years, thank you so much for posting it!! Tears and shivers!! It seems like only yesturday!!
Gave me chills when they announced the 6.0's across the board on the second set of marks! My favorite Ice Dancing performance ever, by the greatest Ice Dancers ever! Thanks!
Thank God for YouTube!!! Now I can see this whenever the mood takes me!!! :D
I've never seen anything like that before!!! :)
The British pair that we now have are good (they did a routine to Justin Timberlake's 'Cry Me A River' that was really good), but I don't think anyone will ever surpass Torvill & Dean! :)
jaxomsyd thankyou for posting this, have always loved Torvill & Dean they were absolutely amazing & so breathtaking in this performance, i miss watching them. I remember watching it at the time on tv, was totally amazed by them.
Goose bumps, cold shivers, moist eyes...even after all these years and having watched it so may times my reaction is the same now as it was then. They were wonederful.
Breathtaking! Electrifying! It still sends shivers down my spine. The most beautiful pairs performance I have ever witnessed. I have been looking for this video for years, thank you so much for posting it.
Thanks so much for posting this. Before the '84 Olympics, I'd never seen ice dancing. What an introduction!!!

@erginakif
Didn't Christopher Dean choreograph for Marina Anisina and partner?

Should be able to put 10 stars against this! :)

Thanks for posting it! :)
