  • And I thought math was hard...

  • Thank you soo much, this to me, is the hardest lesson ever

  • Well... That's not how I got it..

from 1st info I got the following equation:

    N = 4 + U

    from 2nd info I got:

    N - 2 = 5 ( U - 2 )

then I replaced the value of N from the earlier equation to be:

    4 + U - 2 = 5U - 10

    4 - 2 + 10 = 5U - U

    U = 3 and N = 7

But you are great I love your videos....

  • why cant you simply do it like this: nazrath = n umaima = u n= u + 4 n= 5u 5u = u+4 4u = 4 u = 1 so umaima was 1 year old 2 years ago..so nazrath was 5....which makes her 7 years old right now By the way...i'm not correcting you or anything like that ...you are honestly the best teacher in the world..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111
  • Nice video very productive :)

  • thnx for the examples of age word problems

  • wow thank dude YOU SAVED MY LIFE :D ur a great teacher...

  • can any1 solve this...3 years ago.john was 24 years older than his son.now, john is 5 times as old as his son.how old is john now

  • @kalsoom31 lets say:x= john's current age, and y=his son's current age x-3=24+(y-3)>>>bec. john 3yrs ago, is 24yrs older than his son, & his son is 24yrs younger than him 3yrs ago, x=5y>>>bec. john is currently 5 times older than his son.(multiply the first equation by -5 to cancel out 5y and y)>>>-5x+15=-120-(5y+15) and add it to the second equation, and ull get,>>>-4x+15=-120+15>>>solve for x>>>x=30=john's current age, substitute 30 to the second equation(30=5y) and you get that y=6 DONE =)

  • @KuweEnma thnx so much

  • adsakkidgs; i love u. <3

  • gfdgd

  • this was perfect help for beginner thank you

  • On second thought: I couldn't have been the first one trying this route, and sure enough: balflaer81 took the same approach...

    Cheers!

And thanks for making this available, Sal!

(congratulations to getting the Colbert bump!)

    : )

  • found a different (more intuitive for me) approach with the same result:

    N = U + 4

    N - 2 = 5(U - 2)

substitute the first N into the second equation:

    U + 4 - 2 = 5U - 10

    12 = 4U

    U = 3, therefore N = 7

  • My mother, directed me to see what this guy is about, as I am I am a visual learner and this Sal guy doesn't show all the work he's talking about. I will still watch his videos, but geez!

  • @njordbanki

He has improved in his newer videos. This is one of his older videos, and if you notice there is no HD which is also annoying.

  • confusing =/

  • easy, Naz could be 6 4 8 1 or 9 because you didn't say how old umaima was.

  • its good, but i just cant handle the handwriting...

  • This teacher is greatest thing to every happen to youtube. He is teacher young an old a like about math. I was a high school drop out. Im trying get my GED now an Im lost at math. This man channel is really helping me somewhat understand math again. Just maybe with watching his videos an follow along I might be able to pass my math GED. Most all anyone still in high school dont dropout trust me you will regret it like I am right now. I wish I never dropout school. Now Im old fool trying catch up

  • "2 years ago Naz was 5 times older than Umaima"

THis could mean Umaimas' age 2 years ago or Umaima's age now. Confusing

  • Thanks!

  • thx for aploading this video it helps me a lot of my algebre.

  • tnx for aploadng this video... it helps ,me a lot of my algebre

  • The first example with Ali of course "makes sence" and of course it works out and of course the result is correct,

but it`s completely unexplained how you somehow just arbitrarily set X to 2.

Where is the formular to repeat it with different numbers?

I don`t see how you calculated X down to 2!

    WHY 2X is 4?

  • you should use different colors next time your writing colors are the same as your problem questions

  • I don't care WHAT names he uses as long as he doesn't use the name Osama.

THAT name gets on my last nerve. Reminds me of sanctimonious fools.

But even if he DID use that name, what can *I* do about it?

I use my own names for the reason I stated in another comment. About needing to be able to picture a person.

  • @vickiormindyb

What's wrong with Osama? Its a very very common name? Why is it sanctimonious?

  • @vickiormindyb

Googole Architects and Engineers for Truth. If you are referring to "Osama Bin Laden" he is a CIA asset. There were no terrorists. Don't believe me follow the Scientific explanation which proves that the WTC was a planned demolition. Am I a consiracy theorist? Yes I am! More of a Conspiracy Realist.

  • I use the name, John, when I'm doing word problems w/ names. It's easier to remember, b/c I can see the person I'm thinking of. If I can't picture the people, I can't do the problem, and IDK why that is.

That's one of the ways they got around my left frontal and temporal lobe damage, b/c you picture things using a different part of the brain.

Or so Dr. A. said. He was right, but I didn't like him and got a different doctor.

  • isn't x-5x=-4x? Sal put down positive 4x. I mean, it eventually becomes a positive number by following steps from there, so is it just a time saving thing?

  • um. this is a problem with infinite solutions. because ali could be 5, so 5 times 3 is 15. or so on. infinite from 1upwards towards logic. so it could be any positive answer. bad question.

  • @sickpacdude1

he couldn't be 5, that would mean that in 4 years, he would be 9, and 9/3 is not 5, thus does not fit as an answer

  • it does not make any sense you have x+4=3x how can u - 2x

  • @ml373 because you subtract the x on the left and right sides. Its one of the first things you learn in algebra

    3x-x = 2x. This is because x is technically 1x

  • thanks

  • @LancerZEV He's not asking for your opinion and he's not asking you to name your son Nazrat. So if you don't mind please think before you say any thing stupid.

BTW: the name is very common in our community.

  • @gwg5640

if you can't use your brain in, in case u have one, just don't watch it.

  • @lilremy15 which 2?

  • Can anyone send me website on youtube email where I can find High Level finance word problems

  • you're awesome Sal, hope you keep it up, :-D

  • there's another way of doing it, though I'm pretty sure you already know it Sal N = U+4 [N is 4 years older than U] N-2 = 5(U-2) [2 years ago N was 5 times as old as U] U+4-2 = 5(U-2) [using the 2nd equation, substitute N with U+4(from first equation)] U+2 = 5U-10 [solve] U-5U = -10-2 -4U = -12 -4U/-4 = -12/-4 U = 3 N = U+4 N = 3+4 N = 7
  • it's basically just the same, just that you dont have to do the chart thing

  • wonderful piece of explanation

can u please also provide problems on streams & boats, profit & loss, ratio proportion etc

  • Sal that would be great if you had time to add more videos on algebra word problems. Such as the ones abbysingh611 mentioned, along with rate, time, and distance, coins, mixtures, etc.

  • Could you add a playlist for solving algebra word problems?

  • dnt call him a stupid paki

    u racist worm...

    i'm 1,000% sure he's smarter than u

  • Thank you so much!!! I you have a brilliant talent of teaching! I've watched so many of your videos, and you really helped me, thank you!!! But for some reason, for the last question, when I try it by myself, I keep getting x = 1.

  • brilliant

  • bobo yi fe da ori mi ru.....(african language)

  • Guess u feel happy....yiiipiii...Go tell ur mom uv done something constructive.....

  • you a racist shit...fuck u

and i am saying this on behalf of africans everywhere...

    ur screename totally describes

    have fun ASSHOLE

  • @mozillafirefox92 watch your mouth please. he's just trying to help.

  • yourteacher is for slower learners. for example i dont like yourteacher because i am a fast learner and thats why i am at khan academy. so khan academy is not bad its just bad for you because your not fast your slow. Y=S, K=F, I=F=K, U=S=Y

In which Y is yourteacher S is slow K is Khan academy F is fast I is me and U is you.

  • whats a grade nine?

  • i disagree with derek. he is clear when he's talking but it's difficult to draw clearly on an online blackboard. i find it quite easy to follow and extremely helpful. that was funny though.."let me figure out how to turn this thing off"

  • ya if your slow... i understood easy... lol 7:08-7:13 let me figure out how to turn this off

  • i mean only certain numbers might be badly written and if your following along you know what it is anyway. if your dumb you dont.
