Many people travelled to London just to have a ride on a Routemaster and to get the experience of jumping on and off the back when in motion, in order to get a sense of the style of London living. London now has plastic bendy buses. Today I saw an Envro 300 with the front end off and could see the chassis and I thought the driver doesn't have much protection. Plastic shite. At least the older stuff was pre-stressed steel so much stronger. Has anyone come across an ALX200?
@video47 I use to drive them in Chichester going upto Midhurst. These ALX200s aren't fit for that purpose when you consider how steep some of the hills are, especially when leaving Cocking. The engine just can't cope with the gradient, but they do that trip regularly, and is probably why they've had two engine rebuilds. I refer to them as a cross-eyed bus because I find them ugly.
@1100HondaCB Only 2 engine rebuilds? Some 55 reg VDL Cadets were on their fifth and seventh engines by late 2009 so I have heard! The older bigger simple engines are so much better. Cocking eh? Now thats a funny name for a place lol! :-)
@video47 We have an F reg Olympian (being restored), it's done a million miles and is on its original Gardner engine. I suppose with new engines, if a sensor goes down, it can end up doing major damage if left. Regarding Cocking, is it a-cock-in or cock-ing. I guess one must be cocking. LOL. BTW, the scenery around that area is beautiful and Singleton also has lovely scenery (another funny name). I think Cocking was associated with Midhurst in C12th (IIRC). Haslemere is also beautiful.
The Routemaster so ahead of its time and stood the test of time, now only to be gone, not forever I hope. So maybe one day it will come back, but I doubt it.
When I was a kid you got single deckers (Leyland National) or Double Deckers (VR). that was it. (NBC ex Southdown or Hants & Dorset). Livingstone said if you didn't like the Routemaster you had no soul.. I think it was wheelchair access & emission regulation did for them. and Natonals & VRs.
Hi Jack, it wasn't actually down to the Mayor, as I undertsand he was very pro- the Routemaster, he was more under pressure from varios lobbys to make this type of bus history. I am sure he would have kept the Routemaster if it were down to him. Put it like this you would have to be an utter retard to want to oust London of this iconic bus, bastards aren't they!
Routemaster. A very iconic vehicle and known across the globe. So many people travel to London (or did) just for the traditional double decker experience. I like these, but I am a National man myself.

What a great video mate. I would love to ride in a routemaster, unfortunely I can't as the bus driver is always there.
