this knife is awesome and what all the haters dont realize is that the first batch of knives had problems and were recalled... They fixed the knife and out came the second batch of knives...
It may not be best quality and all but people don't realize something, how many knifes do you see like this? Not many, I've never seen another range of knives with a flint rod system, a sharpening stone in the sheath and not many have a pommel. So you have to realise it is a good knife because there are not many like this. :)
I have one of these and I like it but it is made in china and when you look close you can see that it looks sort of cheap but i think it's pretty sturdy and strong.
heyy i am justin i am from germany ;D im 13 years old and a really good survival guide because ma family was in the army;D i like your movies and i am a very big fan of bear grylls and knives i have a lots of kinves and a want to buy the survival knive from bear.i want to ask you is that a good knife and what are better survival knifes?!
Not junk dude. Do you own one? I do and it has never let me down. I live in the Australian Outback and I muster cattle on ranches bigger than the state you live in. This knife is my one trusted companion other than my rifle that is only used for crocs. The serrated edge will last for a couple of months before I need to sharpen it and is good enough for scaling fish. The pommel is great for tent pegs and blackening thumb nails. This thing will make skinning a Kangaroo a joy.

people are to fussy with survival knives, fuck i could make do with a sharp edged rock, stop winging everyone, the knife is easily good enough for survival situations,if the pommel breaks use a fucking rock!i think anyone in a major survival situation would appreciate having this knife with them for the price of its very good
@jarrod1685 You're entirely missing the point of this video and similar videos. This is for those who wish to prepare with something more than an rock. Folks are looking for other's opinions on this product so they can make a more informed decision. Additionally, a lot of folks in the knife community and knife collectors are a fussy bunch. It's a little more than just finding a survival knife. We just like talking about our collections, likes and dislikes.
@fredhart mate the comment wasnt directed at you,i thought your review was good,im refering to all the bear grylls haters who just pop on youtube and complain about anything they can,i have watched many reviews on the knife and people just seem to dis the the knife because its a bear grylls knife.I have the knife and used it alot and its great and i have had no problems with it.Mine didnt come with all that glue over it either.$110 in aus $50 in us?are they all made in the country?
@jarrod1685 I do see your point, but you need to understand my point: Theres no purpose in spending money on this if I can't trust my life to it.
If I need to rely on a rock for my well being then this tool has failed its job. For every day carry pocket knives I am not so picky. But for a product advertised as a survival knife it damn well better lend itself to my survival. Otherwise its a junk product and gets poor reviews, or at least some criticism. Thats just the way the world works.

@jarrod1685 Didn't really think that through, did you? You could make it with nothing, kill and skin animals for clothing and use, like you said, rocks for makeshift knives. The reason we make survival knives is to make it easier. I doubt you've ever been in a survival situation if you'd actually have a rock rather than a good survival knife with you.
@jarrod1685 We creative, to make our lives easier. If people had followed your logic, we would still be living in caves. I don't mean to insult you or anything, but do you see what I mean?
@jarrod1685 You claim people are too fussy and tell them to make do if the knife is shitty and it fails. You sound very bias, people can get the same performace from a 20 dollar knife as this knife so for the price it is very bad.
Hey, I'm glad to help. An I wasn't suggesting you were bashing bear just some of the other people in there comments. You made an honest review. Keep it up!
Why are so many dudes down on serrations? They should be on a survival knife - just another option in case you need to cut through material other than wood. As far as getting in the way of fine woodworking... Huh? What fine woodworking would one be doing in a survival situation? It's all about options when it comes to survival.
@cyclist01222 The serrations would be destroyed when batoning. Additionally, a good plain edge will cut anything that a serrated edge would. It is also much easier to maintain a plain edge long term.
@fredhart Not necessarily but I'm sure it happens... won't stop you from batoning though. Personal preferrence I guess but why not have both? We are talking about survival use right?
@cyclist01222 I wish I could remember who's channel I saw it on, but the serrations where destroyed with this knife. Don't get me wrong, I did not hate this knife, I love the weight and strength of it. I don't like paying extra for the endorsement, my guess is an extra 5 to 10 bucks. It really comes down to personal preference and opinion. Knifes and guns are a very personal thing :) I really appreciate you commenting and bringing some constructive discussion my friend!
@fredhart It is a bit pricey for 4 1/2". If it was a 6" blade and the tang was visible around the handle, minus the plastic thumb ramp (gets in the way) I would consider it. It is gimmicky.
@fredhart Hey Fred, Check out the Schrade SCHF9 extreme survival knife. From what you describe as your ultimate knife I think this one will do it for you. 1095, full tang, no serrations and 6.5" blade. This thing is a beast and was as low as 30 bucks on amazon. I just got it a few weeks ago. A tip from one vet to another!
@cyclist01222 a plain edge is better because its is better to make notches for lashing, and snares, for my large knife i wouldnt get a serrated edge, but i also always carry a leatherman that has a serrated blade with a rescue cutter, they do come in handy sometimes but not on a big knife, the only people that need serrations are pilot knives such as the gerber lmf 2, so they can cut threw aircraft bodies, but other then that plain edges can do what serrations can and cant
@Troop66Guide Again, personal peference reigns when it comes to knife styles. So many possible situations. I use both and carry 2 or 3 different knives while hiking and camping. They sure are fun to have.
@cyclist01222 yeh i carry a knife in my pocket, a multitool on my belt, and a larger fixed blade in my pack, im not totally against serrations but im just not a fan of gerber, and i dont like the really pointy agressive serrations, i like kershaw serrations and the serrations on kershaw knives, these ones look alrights i just dont like them on my larger fixed blades, only on my folder if tht
Love all the hard A's out there who diss bear grylls bravely over the Internet. So what if the guy sold out to make millions, you'd do the same given the opportunity. One thing he's done. Get your own tv show, climb everest. Walk blindly into a cave an come out the other side. Cripes, drink your own piss, maybe that'll sweeten th
Hey nice review, one thing though, the blade is full tang, it ends about where your pinky is when you grip the handle. Then there is a hard rubber buffer between the end of the blade and the pommel to cut down the shock when hammering. I have the LMF ll an it's basically the same knife.
@TheOutdoorBasics Thank you for the information, I was very interested to know how deep the tang was. I'm also glad that Gerber recognized and fixed the pommel issue early on. BTW, I don't hate Bear Grylls, I just don't like paying extra for his endorsements. I think a knife or gun should be able to stand on it's own merits. I'm slowly learning my survival skills now and these videos and comments help me learn but I don't think I'll be climbing everest soon :)
hi fred. i have a few questions. 1). is the pommel holding up well? 2).are the serations holding up? and 3). could you give me some pros and cons of the knife? thanks alot man. keep up the good work.
Bears a hoax. I mean sure he climbed everest 3 times. But still. "I THINK ILL DRINK MY OWN PISS AND THEM GIVE MYSELF A SEAGULL SHIT ENEMA AFTER SQUEEZING THE SUCCLENT JUICES OUT OF ELEPHANT DUNG WHILE WEARING MY SEAL WETSUIT"
@razorsnapper Yea. I saw that the other day. He was on a raft with water that was too dirty to drink, so he laid down, pulled down his pants, and stuck a tube up his ass so he could give himself an enema with the dirty water. he's a whore. he'll do anything for ratings.
I guess it would work like you said, but it is so cheeeeezzzzzzeeeee, just like bear himself. Why would anyone want a knife with such a poser's name on it?
@MrGr1874 He has another show on now. I can't remember the name of it. But, it's very similiar to his other show. In his new one he spends a week with different tribes where he goes in depth with their survival tips.
@mach1mustang1971 Knives are very personal, I would never bash any make or model unless it is seriously flawed in design or build. Anyway, The Ontario Pilot Knife looks pretty nice and built like a tank!!! I may have to get one!
I have an idea for another video Fred. We should set up a cage match between Bear Grylls and Survivorman. They can each use one weapon from their merchandise line (although I don't know if Survivorman puts his name on any knives). You can promote Bear Grylls and I'll back Survivorman.
Nice video and review. Great hair cut! Either that are you combed your hair for this vid! LOL! I am going to get another Ka-bar. I have the one in the traditional leather but I want the newer version too that has the "plastic" handle. I am having a senior moment and cannot remeber what the handle is made of... I know it's not plastic. I am not a big fan of serations either. Anyway I better take my meds and get back to the nursing home before they find out I'm missing. :0)
@Roberthurz Yes, I finally got a haircut, I really hate going to the barber and the dentist :) Anyway, I better take my meds and retire for the evvening, it's way past my bed time :)
Becker BK2 Campanion from k-bar. FTW. These bear knives are cheap looking. I also would love to know if they sent this to you Fred or did you go out and buy it? I only ask because every time one of the people i sub too get one to review 5 other ones review a different model at the same time.
Maybe you could do a comparison to this knife and the kershaw roughneck. They are roughly the same price and same knife category. I bought the roughneck just because I found it really cheap (like $23) but it would be an interesting comparison. It's made in Japan so no slave-labor issues.
@derekgrebner87 You're not being a bastard!!! I'm not a huge fan of this knife, it is a gimic, but I do feel it was done fine for what it is and it's price. Thank you for being honest my friend!
So, in other words, it's a serviceable knife that isn't a complete piece of junk, but it's also not an ideal survival knife either? The Gerber LMF made a little more sense to me, being as it's more of a military style survival knife, but for more of a "got lost hiking," camp style knife (as I see this knife), I'm a little more critical of the serrations. I'd also prefer a different grind as well. The blade shape is fine, coating is debatable, and the steel choice is adequate, though I
@wcropp1 generally prefer non-stainless in a bush knife, but this is personal preference as well, stainless may be better for the average user, assuming it isn't too brittle or hard to sharpen. The diamond sharpener and fire steel are a nice touch. If the tang extends to the pommel, then it is probably a pretty tough knife. I don't think I'd take this as my only tool on an expedition into Northern Canada, but I'm sure it'll serve most people well. The new Bear Grylls Parang looks interesting.
this knife is awesome and what all the haters dont realize is that the first batch of knives had problems and were recalled... They fixed the knife and out came the second batch of knives...

you gave that knife a good test. I'd like to see one without the safety orange color, maybe drab or something.

funXguyXMW249 11 months ago
theres nothing like a buckhorn knife with a bowie blade made of damascus steel, but this is a nice knife and even comes with a fire stick awesome!

Thx for the review, Fred. I look forward to your firestick tutorial. :)

Great vid. That thing looks gimmicky, as in, sold to yuppies who think they can go into a store and buy a ready made system to keep 'em safe.

razorsnapper 11 months ago
Bears a hoax. I mean sure he climbed everest 3 times. But still. "I THINK ILL DRINK MY OWN PISS AND THEM GIVE MYSELF A SEAGULL SHIT ENEMA AFTER SQUEEZING THE SUCCLENT JUICES OUT OF ELEPHANT DUNG WHILE WEARING MY SEAL WETSUIT"
razorsnapper 11 months ago
@razorsnapper Yea. I saw that the other day. He was on a raft with water that was too dirty to drink, so he laid down, pulled down his pants, and stuck a tube up his ass so he could give himself an enema with the dirty water. he's a whore. he'll do anything for ratings.

I guess it would work like you said, but it is so cheeeeezzzzzzeeeee, just like bear himself. Why would anyone want a knife with such a poser's name on it?

@MrGr1874 He has another show on now. I can't remember the name of it. But, it's very similiar to his other show. In his new one he spends a week with different tribes where he goes in depth with their survival tips.

good job fred...i question if it is worth the money...i will just stick with my ontario pilot survival knife...
mach1mustang1971 11 months ago
@mach1mustang1971 Knives are very personal, I would never bash any make or model unless it is seriously flawed in design or build. Anyway, The Ontario Pilot Knife looks pretty nice and built like a tank!!! I may have to get one!

Excellent review my friend.
I have an idea for another video Fred. We should set up a cage match between Bear Grylls and Survivorman. They can each use one weapon from their merchandise line (although I don't know if Survivorman puts his name on any knives). You can promote Bear Grylls and I'll back Survivorman.
TheMultiGunMan 11 months ago

It's made in Japan so no slave-labor issues.

i have a kabar 1207 made in usa is it a good one if can you mass me let me no thanks
freddy14210 11 months ago
@freddy14210 Kabar's in general are great values and very good knives. That is why I made reference to the good old Marine Fighting Knife.
fredhart 11 months ago
gerber sucks i bought a becker bk 2 for 55.00 way better knife but great info and great video!
recon66661 11 months ago
@recon66661 Gerber has some real junk but in my opinion, some of their higher end stuff is good, not the best, but good.
fredhart 11 months ago
Fred i dont mean to be a bastard but i kind of think this stuff is kind of a gimic. im waiting for the decorder rings.
derekgrebner87 11 months ago
@derekgrebner87 You're not being a bastard!!! I'm not a huge fan of this knife, it is a gimic, but I do feel it was done fine for what it is and it's price. Thank you for being honest my friend!
fredhart 11 months ago
Do they still have those cheesy survival knives with the compass on the pommel? I haven't seen a commercial for them since the 80s.
wrathofthemonarch 11 months ago
great knife Fred, loved the shirt to btw lol
TDF090779 11 months ago
So, in other words, it's a serviceable knife that isn't a complete piece of junk, but it's also not an ideal survival knife either? The Gerber LMF made a little more sense to me, being as it's more of a military style survival knife, but for more of a "got lost hiking," camp style knife (as I see this knife), I'm a little more critical of the serrations. I'd also prefer a different grind as well. The blade shape is fine, coating is debatable, and the steel choice is adequate, though I
wcropp1 11 months ago
@wcropp1 generally prefer non-stainless in a bush knife, but this is personal preference as well, stainless may be better for the average user, assuming it isn't too brittle or hard to sharpen. The diamond sharpener and fire steel are a nice touch. If the tang extends to the pommel, then it is probably a pretty tough knife. I don't think I'd take this as my only tool on an expedition into Northern Canada, but I'm sure it'll serve most people well. The new Bear Grylls Parang looks interesting.
wcropp1 11 months ago
@wcropp1 I think you hit the nail on the head!!! Great, great comment and insight!!!
