yeah sure it'll mess up the meat if you shoot a scatter shell or bird shot whatever you prefer to call it.. thats why you use a slug for a deer, 30/30 is a little simpler and also gets the job done but you can use a shotgun and have no worries

in illinois you can only hunt deer with a shotgun. no rifles
