nasa may have already sent people off into life long missions in space. perhaps they have created a space race of people onboard a giant ship which can support life and has indefinite propulsion capabilities or orbit methods. if you look at the bare facts it is quite clear that the US cannot go the moon or as it has been said "even to lower earth orbit" meaning it cannot even build a space station on its own. Perhaps it could even it ignored all others issue and diverted all resources to NASA and that would have dire consequences.

A lot of the innovative companies that can do the jobs and rely on US talent have slowly been phased out. Everybody who was in their 30s and 50s who built NASA are dead or retired. NASA isn't like the Navy Nuclear Program... most people in NASA are good, but the National leadership and mandate isn't there. Going aboard is a way to move the program forward. Will it work?
