  • Amaaaazinnnggg

  • Beautiful landing.

  • Cracking technology!

  • Awesome!

  • Fantastic !!!

  • what airline?

  • @zohar3998 Cathay Pacific

  • the coolest thing is the speed brake being activated automatically on 1:30

    if u agree thumbs up!

  • @Hudfel99 Agree, but that is called autobrake. It's activated almoast every landing because the spoilers keep te plane on the ground after touchdown. Nothing to do with autoland.

  • @calmatosport you are wrong, these are the ground spoilers not the autobrakes!!

  • @79elia88 correct

  • I have only ever flown the 747 on a flight simulator PC and real 747 simulator , I have always wondered how those flying them day in day out you don't get worried about overshooting the runway because you are so high up and it gives a false impression of distance.

    great landing though.

  • beautiful!

  • I wonder if even seasoned pilots experience a little sphincter pucker every time they enter a cloud deck.

  • Doesn't autoland control reverse thrusters too?

  • @danielc0307 No no no.. Autoland have nothing to do with the thrusters.. So pilot have to take care of them,on landing..The Autoland, only have the G/S,flaring,landing etc :D

  • @danielc0307 No it doesn't :)

  • youtube aviation experts.....showing their ignorance one post at a time.

  • Fun with the LA marine layer!

  • Jeez look how cloudy it is!

  • This is proof that they don't really need pilots anymore.

  • @FSXunplugged But this still isn't perfect ;)

What happens if the 'auto pilot' has the wrong frequency, collision with other aircraft, mechanical error ect.

They are just there for safety, and other purposes.

  • @FSXunplugged

    yeah no

  • @drbackjack well they still need someone to taxi the plane to the gate :)

  • @FSXunplugged The autopilot is just a convenient tool for the pilots, not something which pilots can rely on... There have been countless crashes and accidents relating to the autopilot doing stupid things, and also the PFD, MFD, ND, EICAS giving out the wrong information to the pilots... e.g Air Transat 236... the ECAM gave out the wrong information, and at the same time there was also a fuel leak. That caused the plane to run dry, and turn into a glider...

  • @RZ3296 We already have unmanned spacecraft flying to distant planets, landing and conducting experiments and unmanned drones flying missions over the war in the middle east. Redundancy, backup systems and emergency override with reprogramming capability can by done remotely with controllers on the ground. That technology is already being used in spacecraft. A retiring 777 pilot said it himself, that one day we will no longer need pilots aboard commercial airliners.

  • @FSXunplugged Well, I guess you don't get the message here... The experimental aircrafts you are talking about will not carry any souls for commercial use. No matter how sophisticated the technology is, there is still need for a pilot. No COMPUTER is 100% guaranteed to perform what it is obliged to do. You always need pilots incase of failures to certain systems. The retiring 777 pilot was either using hyperbole, or meant that we no longer need pilots to INPUT anything to the CONTROLS.

  • @FSXunplugged and what happens when the radio signal that is controlling the aircraft is lost, either due to weather, a loss of power aboard the aircraft in question, faulty ground equipment, or faulty equipment aboard the aircraft, or any other reason? The aircraft would then be uncontrollable. Latency would be another issue. In a world where a half second is life or death, latency of any kind could not be afforded. There will never be a day when there is not a flight crew aboard.

  • Stryker pull up pull up!!

  • pilots have an easy job just sit and watch the plane fly by it self.

  • @XxNx007xNxX lol, know what you talk about before you "open your mouth" so that you don't make a fool out of yourself.

  • @ddswh1pk0s getting degree is primary because if I fail to become a pilot, then there wouldn't be any job left as every job requires a dignified person. NOTAM: I live in India and the following comment is as per my knowledge, I am supposed to study hard for 4 years and will then get admission in some good college. After that I will apply for pilot entrance exam.

  • I am 13, give me wishes for my future, I want to become a successful pilot in Qantas airlines

  • @TheHedgehogPilot : My prayers for you. :)

  • i wanna be a pilot..but the cost is too high.any rich pilot wanna invest on me???xD

  • That landing was unbelievably smooth

  • @bkboeing 'cause its autoland mode

  • @Sunamer1 Autoland does not mean the landing will be smooth.

  • I would be too scared to trust the autopilot all the way to touchdown

  • To the comments ^^. its only fun when you are taking off and landing the rest is boring, unless something goes wrong mechanically while in the air, and things get exiting.

  • oh man oh man, landing in all that marine layer. I don't know how they did it. It looked impossible.

  • @ASENEBS281294

Autoland often makes good landings ;p

  • @ASENEBS281294 are you the pilot of this?

  • low ceilings, but fair for a CAT III ILS. This is the kind of condition that happens in kathmandu (VNKT) very regularly, and we don't have ILS, we have to do a VOR DME Approach and circle to land, which is a lot more challenging because until 6 DME, ground clearance is very low. The GPWS is constantly going off until 6 DME and then suddenly drops from 8900 to 4500 by 2 DME.

  • What is low ceiling? I thought ceiling was the highest an aircraft could fly...

  • i think its the clouds

  • ceiling deals with the altitude of clouds AGL around an airport

  • a low ceiling is just low cloud cover, now what your talking about is the aircrafts maximum cruising altitude

  • oooo I see, thanks for the info guys.

  • I love aviation. =]

  • wow a very low ceiling dude.

  • No, it wasn't a risky landing. Before you mouth off about aviation and what is or is not risky, I suggest you learn something about Instrument Flight Rules.

  • Excellent, thanks

  • Excellent, thanks for posting this. That was a low ceiling, maybe 600ft? No wonder they use autoland!

  • ya i would say lowest of 600 feet highest of 800 feet

  • can the auto land system engage the reverse thrust aswell if the crew doesn't?

  • no.

  • Comment removed

  • I think it is called ILS & GS Approach hold. I use it all the time in Flight Sim, it will even get your nose gear right on the centerline. Just tune in to the frequency and sit back!!

  • Comment removed

  • ILS is Instrument Landing System

    and GS is Glideslope.

  • lolol

  • haha.

  • wow u are really dump lol

  • Yeah I'm really dumb thats why you don't know how to spell or use proper punctuation.

  • well i type fast u no

  • and i type on msn havnt u heard off quick words dah

  • Well If my punctuation is better than yours, you have no right to call me dumb so you are now dumb.

  • fuck you then now is that better punctuation?

  • Nope still no capitals, or commas.

  • Fuck you then, now is that better punctuation?

  • Yes congratulations, would you like an award?

  • No i'm fine you are probably are 30 year old i'm just 14

  • I'm 15 moron.

  • wow u must really be a nerd then

  • Sure probably the buffest nerd around if you want to say, and even if I was a nerd I have 10 times as much money as you.

  • oooo do u want a buff medal???

  • No I already have one.

  • k im going to go now cause this is getting anoying

  • Then stop commenting back.

  • k i will then but all i have to say is ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum ya mum

  • Kids, grow up!

  • Few airports allow fully automated landings. Also the aircrew has to have qualifications.

If anyone was REALLY wondering, the alarm sound at 1:53 is the autopilot being disengaged. This means it really was an automatic landing with only throttle inputs just before touchdown and after.

Thanks for posting this video. I don't think I've seen a real autoland cockpit video on Youtube before.

  • I hate autoland, I love the 747 but let the pilot fly the plane.

  • Ok so how is he going to land when there is less than 75 meters of visibility?

  • use the instruments, it can be done.

  • Ok I don't think I would do it manually when you can't even see your hand if you stuck it in front of you.

  • OK well i did not intend to offend you if i did, just my opinion.

  • I'm not offended its just common sense you wouldn't know how much you should flare and all the other things that occur during landing sometimes auto-land is just needed regardless.

  • jd10t is correct, it's perfectly viable to land on instruments and you don't need the autopilot to know how much to flare by. It's safety regulations that dictate that the autoland should be executed.

  • Are you talking to me?

  • I don't appreciate your smart mouth.

  • It would depend on the catagorey of the landing. LAX is certified CATT III, Minimums on 24L and 25R. Depending on the subdivision of CATIII there does not have to be a DH

  • autoland?? that takes the fun out of flying!! haha jp.. but really with conditions like that you kinda have to.. nice work

  • incredible. thx for the vid :]

  • hey nice vid,, keep on posting,, r u an airline pilot btw?

  • Man if I had my life to start over again I would be a pilot...

  • - @ georgetime -

You're the same age as me (acording to your profile) and I'm thinking about doing it... We're not even through half our lives yet. Go for it!

  • @georgetime yeah me too. :D

  • @georgetime ,I second that.

  • @georgetime never too late (=

  • @georgetime Commit suicide and ask god for a new life and become a pilot, it's as simple as that!

  • @arjennovic ....lol?

  • @georgetime Agreed...

  • @georgetime Why You say That.

  • nikkirock::: I would too!!!!!

  • why do they do manual land vs auto land sometimes

  • Mainly the weather outside however there are other reasons as well, generally manually landing is the preferred method however when weather precludes, such as in this video where the pilot couldn't see the ground until the last minute definetly plays a big role in the reasoning behind the automatic landing. Computers do have limitations which is another reason visual is preffered, that answer your question?

  • cathay pacific

  • Nice job, you hear that carefully.^.^

  • Have they removed the 60ft callout from the GPWS?

  • It's not needed anymore since Kai Tak closed. It used to have something to do with the heights of the buildings in Kowloon city. They took it out in 2006 i think.

  • airline?

  • But it was an autoland. They switched off the autopilot after landing. You can hear this.

  • how do you know this is autoland? I was under the impression you aren't allowed to let the computer completely land the aircraft

  • Because any CAT III ILS is Autoland, and they do let the computer land the plane too.

  • But it was an autoland. They switched off the autopilot after landind. You can hear this.

  • look at the mcp. apr and all 3 autopilots are operating.

  • Banzaaaaiiiiiiiii

  • Pilots have the Best job in the world, they get paid to fly, and enjoy the scenery. They have so much pride, and it's a very rewarding job. I'm getting my PLL soon at GCC finishing my major in Aviation and Trasportation. Hopefully one day i'll be taking one of those big boys up on the air with 500 passengers, and bring them back down safely. God i love planes!!

  • and hopefully i will be guiding you through the busy skies. See you up there

  • haha We couldn't do it with out your help ATC! lol. Ready for take off at your discretion Tower.

  • and hopefully i will be guiding you through the busy skies. See you up there

  • @Omid45

That's what I keep telling my friends (a couple of them fly 737-800's and one an MD80 for American Airlines), but all they do is complain about how much they have to fly, LOL, I keep telling them I wish I had their problem but they just say "you don't understand, there is such thing as too much flying."

Regardless of what they say, I don't believe them, LOL, lucky bastards!!!

  • @Omid45 hey you probably don't remember commenting this vid but.... don't see it as a distant dream and don't hope for it either. A good way to get the things you want is to set an objective, you know like: I shall do this and nothing can stop me! I'm starting my PPL next month, what about you? cheers.

  • Cathay Pacific Airlines?

  • whats auto land????????????

  • WOW... You are a retard... Think about it? There is a thought! Maybe look it up. HMMM... Man I am smart!

  • It's in the name, you tune whats called a localiser, the localiser picks up the frequency you have tuned, you are then turned to the runway, then you approach usually 4 DME(miles) and intercept a glideslope, you descend on this until you hit the runway, all this is done by computer except throttles.

  • Actually, you cannot land catIII with ils, if the airport only has a Localizer/LOC. The LOC is like a VOR, and gives you a reference to the runway line-up only. ILS and CATIII is dependent on a glideslope also. This gives you aircraft altitude in reference to the runway touchdown point, TDZ. Off course, LAX has all of this, but several other airport are not CATIII sertfifed, and thus can`t take down aircrafts below a certain minima, that is e.g. vibilty and could also be too low clouds.

  • totally correct.

  • If you notice in this video, the cloud layer is very low, hence why they are using autoland..

  • of course they're allowed

  • if they weather is clear are the pilots allowed 2 land without autoland?

  • yeah... they usually do.

  • ive always wounderd.. because it must be extremely boring and you dont practise any skill if autoland is always on. if/when/hopefully i become an airline pilot i certainly wouldn't want autoland on , only in bad weather :)

  • no they don´t, only in bad weather etc.

  • not always they usually put in the ILS and fly it manual and they can follow the needles that is on the panel

  • not usually...the Autopilot will do that for them...just press APP hold on the Autopilot!

  • One of my favorites!

  • To low to land safely?

Maybe for a Cathey pilot. They had ground contact at around 500agl thats not even CAT 1 mins.

  • Its not about pride.. the clound cover was way too low to safely attempt a manual landing.

BTW the airline is Cathey Pacific :) when the pilot exits the runway you hear the callsign cathy when he speaks.

  • lulz, and that came from someone who only plays flight sim

  • Um hmm I want you to fly a 10+ hour flight 50 times and not want to land with out AP, it gets old and you just wanna have an accurate landing so you can get of the plane and sleep and/or be with your familly.

  • lol haha

  • thats cool man. i liked that

  • Lazy? Pilots fly a long time, and you think a manual approach in this weather is safe?!

  • what airline is that??

  • Cathay Pacific.
