The ROM is only partially funded by the government of Ontario and has to pay for the majority of its costs through income it generates from admissions, shops, etc. The Smithsonian is fully funded by the US Government and can afford to be free.
Micheal Lee Chin wasted his money.. these rich folks dont need any donations... but his Jamaican country men could have used the money for better purposes.
It's a wonderful work of architecture though. I'm sure he can help both a museum of fine arts and artifacts build an iconic addition, and the people of Jamaica.
I live a 5 minute walk from the ROM. Does the Yorkville area need another overpriced piece of real-estate? There are many homeless people laying on grates in front on front of my condo, even in the dead of winter :( If I were Mr Chin, I would have donated to a building whos patrons drink Listerine, not champagne :S But hey, he's the multi-millionaire.
You can't just donate a lot of money and make those problems go away. It takes some government action, social programs and a lot of time to address homelessness. Must a person give all his money to a specific cause?
This wasn't just a condo project or investment, because it's a public museum. The man supported Toronto's culture by improving a museum, and in the end we can all admire the architecture and artifacts.
shular what? I've been to the ROM and I've been to many others around the world. Halfwitted intellectuals have nothing to do with art. I get a better story told with 10,000 year old cave paintings than what is being shown today.
The ROM is great, this looks like a fun event. I DON"T like the new Crystal addition.. its ugly and totally useless for displaying ancient artifacts... it looks like dry wall assembled for a German Expressionist film from the 1920's, ridiculous.
The ROM doesn't have "shitty" stuff- on the inside. However, "anything and they call it art" is a pretty good description of the new Crystal- completely modified in design with absolutely no consultation, LEAKS, has no vertical walls to hang things on, and creates giant icicles of Death that slide off in the winter and force road closures. AND it looks like a spaceship has crashed down through the roof of a (formerly) beautiful building. Of course, inefficiency is very avant-garde.
But this is a museam, not an art gallery. What art they DO have will usually be quite old, and so not part of the "shitty" stuff you're referring to. Visit the ROM before you pass judgement on it.
of course, as usual...the ppl that throw around their money so they can have every building named after themselves to inflate their ego would die if they had to actually come into contact with someone without as much money and in their narrow view therefore as much class. rich ppl showing off how stupid they are, but only to each other, what a joke it all is...
why are you so anti-success? these people are the people who allow such great structures to be built in our city..
they're also (coincidentally) the people who pay the most taxes to give you cushy social services (even though thy dont benefit from any of them) and give the most to philanthropy.
don't speak out of your ass and try thinking before you type such mindless things.
Could someone tell me why the ROM doesn't have free admission like the SMITHSONIAN?

art has gotten so shitty lately and its a bunch of "elitists" getting together doing anything and they call it art.
