yea they are called strafe jumps and they do make you jump further

one777, its called strafe jumping, and yeah it gets you alot further. you can jump up to 316 units (longest recorded i think) if you dont strafe jump you maybe can reach 260 units at maximum

it is needed in this jumper mod-

2x bash is saving your current position and when you fail in a jump you can load this position back, so you dont need to do the whole way again ...
