@MeanTerminator i totally disagree with you. Brahms was never a fast playing pianist. Speed is NEVER essential on Brahms music but rather the orchestral sound. This tempo could be good if the pianist would have time to breath and to phrase properly which he obvisouly doesn't...
Musically very ugly! No idea what makes true impact, whether in brilliance or poetry. Just fast confused notes, all compacted, no breathing, no light, no shade, no interest.
your words are ugly! no idea what makes true understanding of different styles or ways of playing.just fast and confused comment, all negative , no positive,no respect , no thinking before writing.actually i am saying you should write at least a more friendly comment.not just as if you want to scold him musically very ugly?? why not say he is technically very good?
I'm mightily impressed by his awesome technique in this though the piece would improve greatly were more attention to have been paid to the "musicality" Less speed would I feel result in more musicality. Also it seems criminal to make such a huge effort to learn the piece only to play it in a room awash with too much reverberation, we just lose too much detail. It's made me want to learn it and post my version here. It will be a while because I can't sightread very well though I am determined!
I find it boring...without colours. The sound is everywhere the same. It seems he plays and while he plays he is waiting to finish. Perhaps too nervous...I don't know....
souless, mechanical, relying completely on technical display (which in itself is not always managed well. the 6ths in the first 2 variations - what a mess)
wow. okay, WHAT THE HELL? This guy demonstrates breakneck speed most of the performance, velocity that he can't even keep up with at some points, and... you cut the most virtuosic variations in the piece by leaving the last two out. WHAT THE HELL. gah. what happened? did he actually explode at the climax of the finale, and you didn't want to show that to the audience? because i am soo saddened by the absence of the ending here.
it think that the 1st 2 variations suffer a bad reputation because of how difficult they are to just wrap ones hands around in the first place, yet alone wrest some music outta them.
The 6ths and 3rds on the piano make a pleasing texture in themselves if done clearly, but i think many pianists miss the point and turn it ugly by attempting impossible speeds.
Oh I agree completely. It can be quite beautiful, or at least it has the potential to be. The technical challenge presented is so rarely surmounted, however...
unsauber....zu schnell? trotzdem Wahnsinn, das zu spielen

The best Brahms/Paganini variation I have heard so far, next only to the one by Sergio Fiorentino, and I have heard quite a few.
Speed is of the essence to bring out the essence of this piece. Anything slower than this would be a slow motion sloppy disaster.

Je ne connaissais pas ce pianiste ; c 'est celui dont l'interprétation ma fait le plus penser à celle de Katchen, pour moi insurpassable.
