Big Mac was the best, one of the finest singing actors ever to grace the Met stage. And Scotto, before her voice started to go on her in the mid-80's, one of the company's finest, most versatile sopranos.
Well, they did Puccini's staging at the end for sure! hahaha! I love this opera! Baritone kills a tenor!! Times like these I LOVE being a baritone. Go Macneil.
I agree with you! Although I also like Piero Cappuccilli very much as Michele, what do you think of him in this role? Cappuccilli is my second favourite, Gobbi my favourite! ^^
MacNeil is hard to take at this stage of his career; it's hard to believe this is the same singer as appears on all those great old Decca/London recordings. Scotto, however, is magnificent in TRITTICO, and by this time was one of the greatest singing actors in operatic history.
Macneil, Scotto and Moldoveanu are all in top form here. Sad that some posters here do not recognize this. This from the Trittico where Scotto sang all 3 operas? Clips from at least Angelica are here on YouTube. It was one of greatest artistic achievements of her stellar career. Thanks for posting!
interesting... the only part of the staging i liked was the very end from when she screams... but she was overdoing the being in love with him part... it looked almost like she was wiping her mouth on his face... otherwise, pretty cood. i dont care much for the tenor or baritone though... just scotto, lol.
Macneil is amazing here in my opinion. Who is that tenor though? I've never seen worse acting than his in such a vitally dramatic situation. His singing is not much better either!
WHERE CAN I FIND THIS ON DVD?!!!

when a dramatic scene is done extremely well there may be some nervous laughter as a result. It let's the audience relax.

does anybody feel that the public laughing at 1:38 is stupid? what is there to laugh about?

Michele is perfect for Mac Neil at this stage of his carreer. The best Michele ever was Tito Gobbi

Here she is perfect, sober, intense. The more dramatic because she refrains herself.
The baritone has a beautiful colour of voice

MacNeil is a bit diminished vocally but his acting is top notch and compensates for it all.
