Kate being at the dance alone not knowing where everyone else is, that's her punishment for breaking the statue on purpose and not feeling guilty about Lizzie taking the fall. The school dance being held at Lizzie's house, that's her reward for taking the fall for the broken statue so all the kids can still look forward to the dance.
