  • Like this even better than the Perfect Kiss video. Never really been a fan of music videos--usually ruins the song for me, except maybe Clock DVA's Kinetic Engineering tape, but this is impressive (esp for amateur). Not to sound like a cad, but re the brunette: you can somehow tell she's a lovely person (and jaw-droppingly gorgeous!) If I were Mr Disco, I'd certainly search the world for her. Too bad I'm damaged and far away besides.

  • Love this album and song! Reminds me of my first year in college...best band ever!

  • old skool!^^

  • Top 5 album for sure. Mr Disco - best song on the album. Miss the great music of the 80s.

  • 0:02 new order vans!!

  • Bons tempos...eu era pobre, era feliz, e nao sabia....

  • I used to listen to this song on my walkman while riding my bike

at 2:00am during the hot summer......ahh those were good times!

  • Hello all... I haven't logged on here in a while so I wanted to say thanks for all the comments, obviously especially the positive ones. To the negative ones, please keep in mind that I shot this video when I was 19, (I'm now 36) we had zero budget, (and pretty amateur equipment) the "actors/models" and I were just friends with no professional experience. And most of all, it was just for fun. You can still hate it, but at least maybe the above facts put a little perspective on things. :)

  • @FHONIKTM I know you say they were amatuers but is the dark haired girl in any other videos?

  • @FHONIKTM CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I THINK THIS VIDEO AMAZING!!!

  • Is this guy still opening up for Justin Beiber?

  • I like the video, it looks very New-Order-y : )

  • I love this song

  • Don't know why they never released this song as a single. Releasing Fine Time and Round & Round was perfect but New Order f'd up by releasing Run2...

  • this is new order wot a shit video

  • Still one of the greatest albums ever! Maybe the best

  • I had this CD, I was prolly around 21 years old. Man time passes by quickly. I remember the image on the CD, when you unfolded the CD it has like 6 images of that same statue, I used to trip out on that. This music seems so pure, not anything like todays music. I miss the clubbin' scene and doing x and basically just being a freak and a slacker and going out and dancing all the time w/ no worries. If anyone finds or invents a time machine, I got firsts! And I wanna go back to '84 !

  • @bigdsears Me too

  • Gillian Gilbert is amazing!

  • Always hated the title...but the song on the other hand...gorgeous swooning synthpop masterpiece and the same could be said for the whole album too - their last 100% flawless record. It soundtracked a whole year of my life back in 1989 - highlighted by one of the best summers in living memory too...my god, I wish I had a time machine, I would fast-zoom back to 1989 and 1990 and just live those two magnificent years over and over again - such good times, such great godlike tunes....bliss!

  • I don't care what any other POS says, I like this home-made video. I think it's really bizarre to watch woman lipsyncing to a man's voice. Good-looking womens too ;)

  • Hey FHONIKTM...you capture the mood of the music well. So well, that I actually thought it was some obscure official New Order video, until about halfway through, when I glanced down at a few of of the comments. So, thank you for being that effective. You did good.

  • @ctomarctus Same for me!

  • FHONIKTM I have one word to describe your work and it is:

    " EXQUISITE "

    Congrats and thanks for posting.

  • great video, thought it was an official one!..was workin for hooky at some gig's 3 weeks ago..Technique what an album.....

  • Great video! Works perfectly with the track. Thanks for posting!

  • Great video! Works perfectly with the track. Thanks for posting!

  • I JUST WAN TO SAY THAT THIS IS THE BEST NEW ORDER ALBUM AND MR. TONY WILSON THOUGHT THE SAME!

  • This is my fav new order song and it was done justice with this fab little vid......very arty! lol

  • epic bowl cut is epic

  • I thought it was a lost official promo for a second! Then I thought no it cant be it wasn't scheduled for release as a single. Good effort though.

  • Hmm, the version on my CD is slightly different from this one... Does anyone know why?

  • @Zeneeka0405 This is an edited version. More than 90 seconds are missing.

  • Can i know the brunette's name! She's so cute :D

    Anyway awesome video!

  • Parts of this video are really good

  • Is one of these girls the same one in the Robert Frank directed video for RUN ?

  • Loved this song for years and your video to it is very fitting. As a staunch New Order fan I believe you have captured the same creative ideals as New Order. Well Done! Have the band or anyone associated with New Order ever contacted you about this video?

  • awesome song but makes me so sad...

  • @dohurturself I can understand. if it means to you that you have not found your true love. That will include many people. luckly now days there are so many places to look in the internet for your true love. Hope you find him/her.

  • @desiguy55 thing is that whenever i think i found someone worth loving it ends up pretty bad im giving up tbh

  • @dohurturself you are not the only one.

  • Great job on it! I too, though it was a pro one from that period... it really fits the song well & the lip sync is well-done. Nice cinematography.

  • I first thought it was an "official" video, not a homemade video. Good job!

    Great song btw

  • I really can't understand why this track wasn't included in the 1994 best of.

  • @Cruelruin0 i liked all songs but not ' fine time. coulda been 8 singles.gr8 lp.

  • @mignonhenne yeah,I liked the best of,but...what about dream attack,ceremony,temptations exc.fine time was a bit lame...

  • @Cruelruin0 OTHER GR8 SONGS ARE VANISHING POINT AND MR DISCO.

  • @mignonhenne vanishing point is actually included in the best of :P

  • Britain - no, England - made the tune for intelligent people in the USA. Texas, NY, LA, where are you?

  • Went on holiday from Manchester Airport when Technique had just come out. On a mega hot day waiting for the lift home it looked like the whole of the city was plastered in cherubs.

    Great album, great tune.

  • Technic the best vinyl of new orderrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr !!!

  • It's Mr. Disco, but you can't see him.

    He's invisible.

The start of this great song will never stop making me laugh, it's too hard to guess where the beat is. For years I thought it was somewhere else, even after the bass drum sound came in - I separated the two parts like two completely different songs, and that was the song to me. I listened to Technique 100s of times, and ti was always this way! Funny start.

  • < ... Still can't. I've been playing the start of the song trying to place the beat by tapping at the drumless intro. Can it be done??!!

  • This start was used by a F1broadcaster(bbc?) was it?

  • MR. Disco? who is that, this is not even mentioned in the song. most of the titles of songs in Technique have almost nothing to do with the content. alternative standard titles could have been, " without you" or "peace of mind" or "can't find you".

  • @desiguy3

I thought the song was one of 3 things. Short relationships that happened on holiday and stay in the mind. Or someone only caught sight of or talked to seen on holiday, imagined about lots afterwards. Or just the notion of wanting to go on holiday and find a lover.

  • any of those could be correct, it's open to a lot of interpertation. the strongest is the feeling of losing someone you know already or perhaps regretion at losing someone you love.

  • Of the 3 things the song may be about (in past comment), I think it's the 3rd, the notion of wanting to go on holiday & find a lover. About someone who feels they really need someone they've never met, a song about someone's mind & imagination. Why this subject rather than the others is the section:

Maybe you could write me a letter

Tell me why I never met you,

Our rendez-vous just ended in sorrow

    Without you there's no tommorrow.

    I tried but I can't find you.

Tell me now what do I do?

  • And also, the whispered words towards the end of the song are about a number of places the character / singer has been to on holiday looking for someone he imagines, rather than one place where someone had been met previously and is being searched for:

    Ibiza, Majorca, Benidorm too

I've seen all those faces, never found you.

[I guess the last line is that or close]

  • But you're right, it could be any of 3 possibilities, I guess I'm pointing out that it is likely also to be a song about imagination. As the start section has:

How can I ever forget you

You don't know just what I've been through

    The holiday we spend together

Lives with me now and forever

But, yet, this may be a lovely depiction of how people looking for love may at first imagine a strong holiday romance which turns into a strong relationship will be.

  • I'm still with desiguy's suggestion, though. The possible subject I went with in the last few comments - about the imagination only, there never was a relationship, is as strong a possibility as the more immediately likely possibility - about thinking of a real past relationship.

The words seem to make either possible.

  • Then again (finally) the title, Mr. Disco, sways me to think that this is a song about the character's / singer's imagination and a person & relationship sought rather than remembered. It's more persuasive that he spends his life imagining the foreign discos he'll be at on holiday, and also that he's at those in persons, seeking someone.

It's also my own preference for the song, which seems to me deeper, & with more insight, than if it were about only memories of a relationship past.

  • When I 1st loved this song, a time when I was completely taken by both this amazing album 'Technique' & the early European & American house music scenes, I used to think the synth line was funny, brilliant & very cool. Whether or not an intentional reference (I thought it was) it sounds like a close variation on Euro-disco style club dance pop song "Tell it toy My Heart" by Taylor Dane (American late 80s / 90s pop-club-soul singer)

It ave me nice images of the song playing in a Majorca disco.

  • No, maybe that wasn't 'finally'. I may be swayed the other way, making different sense of the meaning of the title.

The whole musical nature of the song seems to me like a sad disco song, with sympathy and also happiness at what was, with good memories. The character (person) in the song seems to be a disco fan & happy guy who's bound by memories of a past relationship, as desiguy suggested. So the title makes good sense this way, & the character (nature) of the song is maybe more with this.

  • @desiguy3 Not only in technique. Blue Monday, BLT, True Faith, the list goes on... It is a New Order Trade Mark, and the fans like it...

  • Was there any special reason for this video to be made in 1994? Or was it a personal project of someone's? Was the single re-released in that year? The song was so cool at the end of the 80s and for the start of the new decade. But I'd have thought it would have needed a remix for '94.

  • @lecochonbleu the important thing is that the video was made and not just a picture of the cover album.

  • Hmmm? I was asking about the video - I want to know about it. I didn't presume at first this was a home made video put together to share the song in The Web.

  • Yes, it is indeed a homemade video. I did it with a few friends back in '94 when I was 19. I've always loved the song and thought it would be fun to direct a music video for it. It's a bit on the crude side, but we had a blast doing it! :)

  • I like your video, specially where the girls mouth the words to the song. congrats. I think i would love to make a video for "vanishing point " i have a few ideas.

  • I love it. I thought it was a video by an 'arty' (!) professional director. Thank you very much. Great piece of culture in U.K.

  • Awh, thanks... I was only 19 when I did it in '94, in of all places, Ohio... wish I had the time to do more videos... it's such a fun form of expression.

Your kind words are much appreciated!

  • fhoniktm i wanted to make films and videos too but my career took a different path. anyway the more i view your video the more i appreciate your skills is producing this.

  • haha great piece of culture in uk? initially i thought this was shot in germany. amazing how ohio resembles uk. lol.

  • Yeah, it's often that it would only be possible for music makers having videos made for them to say they're international creations. Is the director British?

  • *y pensar que antes del reggaeton existió algo llamado musica. Dios! por que no nací antes?? por que no puedo pertenecer a una generación que experimentó el estilo de las verdaderas bandas??**

  • Amazing song, takes me back to youthful times!

  • I couldn't believe it when I heared that song in the film 'He is just not that into you' great song and a good film.

    Thanks!

  • Top track

  • yo también tuvé 20 años y un corazón vagabundo...

  • One of the best till this day!! Way beyond their time!!

  • couldn`t give a rat`s arse for the video, the tune, on the other hand, is awesome, as you`d expect from a band at the pinnacle of their profession, can`t quite get my head round the fact that Technique is now 20 yrs old, where does time go

  • True that, man I remember when I first got the album back in 89, never knew they would top 1987 album with Technique

  • @roge1370 tell me about it . 1989 was a dynamite year technique will always remind me of a summer of sun morrocan black and lager that and the stone roses lp . time passes far to quickly grab it with both hands

  • @roge1370 Its amazing what wonderful tunes 3 musicians (and ones bird) can come up with when you send them to the Balearic islands (at the height of the acid house phenomenon - Ibiza of all places) with a bag of cash and say "come back when you have an album! - hence a long long time later we have Technique - which Vanishing Point is the best non released single ever, by any band!

Saying that Mr Disco isn't bad

  • @roge1370 Technique was one of me fave albums at school & still is after all this time :)

  • @roge1370 The song had no official video, but this no budget videon is a stylish production fitting this song. I know how hard it is to direct amateurs but this is remarkable. thanks for the upload Fhoniktm.

  • does anybody know the name of the "new order" song, where in the video clip they all walk off the stage and the music continues playing??? plz help, i saw it ages ago and cant remember the name

  • touched by the hand of god

  • theres a viseo of "Temptation" live where they do that...

  • touched by the hand of god , i think

  • Sounds like Temptation live in New York 1981 to me.

  • I remember the mushroom haircut on the boy in the video! So 90s! Check out the Ocean Blue for the ultimate look.

  • ahhhh, david schelzel's sweet little bowl cut. :-) LOVE the ocean blue.

  • 94 doesn't seem so long ago. Sadly it was.

  • Song came from the album Technique, released in 1989

  • Not that it helps, but there are 3 bands in the world whose complete catalogue I have. New Order are the only one from before 2000 in that list...

Get everything you can by them before it stops getting printed, you'll regret it forever otherwise

  • WOW!!! a lot of money!!! Congratulations!!! I only complete the Depeche Mode Catalogue!!! :)

  • if we all payed for all the music we had then that, for most normal kids(someones probably looked at my youtube accoutn age which isnt accurate btw) without massive subsidies from generous middleclass parents isnt that much, especially given the extortionate prices. what i do is download music illegally for free, i listen to it, i then gradually expand my cd collection(starting with the best, ive got about 40 cds roughly)

if i didnt download music id be forced to listen to the bleedin radio

  • furthermore, i imagine new order would be more bothered about respect and esteem than cash cash cash, and more people listening comes from downloading. surely they want to be remembered as a great band rather than forgotten with a generous pension?

plus, there are some albums etc that just arent for sale anymore - id rather download them illegally for free than forget about them.

and enfin, the concept of owning music is almost as ridiculous as the concept of land-ownership

  • I think your are fooling yourself (guilty conscience) and that New Order want to cash. It may surprise you, but the band members have families and bills to pay.

  • Comment removed

  • I think it's because we're all New Order fans and the thought of them getting ripped off burns us a little bit...that's all.

If you like their music, you should pay for it.

    They deserve it.

  • Well said.

  • My apologies, I didn't mean to upset you, or anybody else. I have removed my comments now, I thought maybe that's the least I could do.

    Sorry again...

    - J

I wouldn't mind paying for the music if I had a job and money, I mean I'm only 15.

  • When I was 15 I had about 4 albums...

  • Yeah, that's cool, I wish I had that many

  • One of my favourite songs.

  • Oh, and a great video too. Well done and thanks for posting it.

  • Its cool to see so many people who were born in the early 80's such as myself that love New Order.

  • even those who weren't love new order!!

  • 1981, i love new order.

  • I bought Technique on CD in 1989 when it first came out, and this was always my favourite track on that album. 20 years later it probably still is, although Round And Round comes quite close.

  • Great vid.

I wonder what these folks look like now. 14 years has passed so quick.

  • The shots of the dark haired girl are wonderful. Doesn't hurt that I think she's very beautiful.

Also, the shot where they're running and the guy is climbing is good.

And finally, were high-waisted jeans really in at that time in Ohio, or were you going for intentional outre? :)

  • @teddyadorno I am the "dark haired girl" in the video. If I could edit anything out of that video, it would be the high-waisted jeans.

  • @llovies high waist or not you look great!

  • @llovies But you made up for it by that evening gown, ooolala.

  • @llovies It's been yet another year, but I need to ask, are you married?

  • very good, you know they recently put this song in a scene of the movie drama comedy "he is not that into you"

  • Me gusta mucho tu video

  • Yes, this is very good considering the kind of budget you had. It fits the mood of the song perfectly and it is sowewhat reminiscent of Round and Round with all the close ups. I think the framing errors were sort of intentional, right? To add to the loneliness of the lyrics...

  • Yes, the budget was definitely low... we had zero $. Thanks for the kind words. We wanted it to feel like a NO video and definitely Round and Round was an influence. And you are correct about the framing. The idea was to have these tight crops on the girls, sometime cutting off their eyes, half their face, etc to enforce the "I tried but I can't find you" lyrics. That what they were looking for, that lost love was always far off the frame, far away from reach.

  • So, did you become a "real video" producer or are you just a one-hit wonder? :) Anyway, Technique was so good that Mr Disco, Vanishing Point and Dream Attack were not singles. I think all three are better than Fine Time.

Oh, my comment just shows you why we can't rely on critics all the time. Someone who never saw Round & Round wouldn't get the reference. And would say "you have framing errors". Also, the girld looking down as they lip-synch the wods is a great touch.

  • I don't remember this being released as a single??????

  • It wasn't ever released as a single. This video was just something that me and my friends did for fun when we were teenagers.

  • Great video! I am a big New Order and I loved it!

  • Whouaw, I'm amazed !

With the means you had this is great, some mistakes of centring/framing anyway.

What camera did you use ?

    You have some talent !

PS : the blond girl is also nice, so my judgement is impaired (??)

  • love it.

  • Love it...

  • bernard feeling in love

  • no way! i've never seen this video & this is one of my fav tracks!

  • Its not an offical video - but its very good anyway.

  • looks like an original!

if it is not it is VERY good!

  • I can't find my peace of mind

Because I need you with me all of the time

I used to think about you night and day

I used to feel what language cannot say

    Oh I can't find you

No I can't find my paece of mind without you

    Ibiza, Majorca, and Benidorm too

I've searched all these places but never found you.

  • I always thought the last lines were "A master of yoga you really don't do / A cyst on his face cause he never found you" (as unlikely as that sounds).

  • the whispered bit ?

"Ibiza, Majorca and Benidorm too - I searched all these places and never found you"

  • lol

  • zorbabelfast- No shit! I always wondered what they were saying on that part...

  • I remember the CD entire cover for Technique had all these neat colors and stuff. Music was pretty revolutionary around this time, really cool dance music for clubbing

  • Wow very cool, good casting and direction.

  • i remember to this day hitting up the record store day of release, zooming home, and being completely blown away by Technique.

Cool to see the work you guys put into this back then, very nice to still have i bet.

  • I always regret being born in 1983, I couldn't enjoy these masterpieces at the moment of their release... :(

  • This was 1989 not early 90s

  • Yes, the song was released in 1989. But this video that my friends and I did was done in 1994.

  • Some really good shots here...captures the mood of the song nicely! Good one!

  • one of my all time favourite songs by any musical artists, the early nineties were the best

  • You know Chris, I think it holds up pretty well after 14 years. Really, there are a couple of shots that are a little off, but by and large it was really good. Certainly top notch for a bunch of teenagers trying to make a "real" video. Thanks for posting it! -Stephen

  • I agree... especially when none of us really knew what the hell we were doing. Ha.

  • Wot a tune!!!!

  • Viva Cornholio!

  • hi!!! from mexicali baja mexico we love new order !! esta chingon este grupo lo amo y a depeche y los 80s ejido puebla pancho galindo

  • chido paisam desde el DF. Un chilango ochentero y medio outsider te saluda

  • Seems to me that a guy should be singing, otherwise, good job... Well done.

  • lol.. Dude... lol....

  • Technique and Primal Scream- Screamadelica 2 of the best albums ever.

  • technique is one of the best album ever

  • Great Song!

  • Thank you for this contribution!

I remember a long time ago when I got the album Technique and spent hours listening to this song.

  • Appreciate the effort and the obvious homage to a band that we both adore, but I can't say that it's very good lol. I also can't say that it's any worse than the rest of New Order's official videos lol.

  • Wonder where this video was shot?

  • Cincinnati, OH, USA

  • Technique is my fave album of all time and Mr Disco is my fave track. I miss 1989.

  • 1989 was a great year for music! Technique by New Order + Disintegration by the Cure + Green by REM + Street Fighting Years by Simple Minds !!

  • a wonderful house-track

  • IBIZA, MENORCA and BENIDORM too

I've searched all those places and never found you!

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

  • Thank you for a great video..I always really loved this song! DISCO IS ALIVE!

  • Excellent work!

  • ^__^ *friendly hug*

  • tell me now

  • I love Technique so fucking much. Thanks, Mom, for playing New Order's Technique tape in the car when I was just a little girl. THANK YOU. (#@&$(*@&#$@ING AWESOME TAPE

  • Technique!! is my favourite album of all time!! Even though dm is my favourite band I got to say I played technique literally a thousand times since junior high!!

  • Ho shit! YOU ROCK :D

  • hmmm you spoke out of my soul :-)

there is nothing better than depeche mode

but technique is indeed an innovative and great masterpiece

    its from 1989 incredible

  • For that the video went out in 94 if the disc went out in 89?
