i actually prefer a concrete base over a kerdi styrofoam base, but i still prefer to put the kerdi on top of the concrete and drywall.,to prevent any water penetration.
Wow, there are a LOT of angry people on youtube. if you would all get together, I am sure a fist fight would occur, which would prove your intelligence beyond a shadow of a doubt.
@jfstarr, but I'm smarter than YOUR mama that taught you ...no one had to "teach me "...it's all common sence, duh ! People thought slavery was a great idea, people thought asbestos was a great idea, people thought Ga Pacific Siding was a great idea, people thought polybutylene was a great idea, etc., etc., etc....not all NEW inventions or ideas are great, neither is this...I'm ahead of my time, so your "thank you" now is appreciated ;-)
@StarrTile "It's all common sence, duh" 10 years as a GC and I see "experts" f*ing this sort of thing up all the time. "Master Carpenters" who think its OK to stack top-plate joints on an exterior wall and on and on...
So if grout is not WP and dry pack mortar is not waterproof and thinset is not waterproof, where do YOU send the water that gets through? Unless your coating the top of your mortar with WP compound such as RedGard, in which case you are right, you don't need a pre-slope
jfstarr : You're 100% wrong....water seeping through your mortar ?? Are you kidding me ?? Proper install of TILE & GROUT on your mortar negates that possibility, duh ! If you seriously think a pre-slope will insure water going into weep holes, you're screwed up the job ANYWAY...besides, water will be absorbed by the dry mortar before it ever reaches the weeps, making the mortar WEAK and causing a much bigger issue than " will water reach the holes"...you don't really think ahead, do you...
First thing I get tired of seeing, PRESLOPE ! No point in doing a preslope, your mortar bed will be sloped, its redundant ! Second the guy doesn't use PT 2x4's on the curb ??? Thats where water damage is worst, at each end ( where the pan liner stops. 3rd no 2x6's in between each stud ??? C'mon ! And lastly, the guy SHOULD cut an X in the drain & install drain plug for test to be sure IT won't leak too..now whats point of moisture barrier ? Keep that moisture to the tile so they'll pop off ?LOL
Old school is better? I'm so damn sick of hearing that crap. Long as the finish product looks good who cares. Time is money morons ! Why do you think these new techniques were invetnted?. it was because the old school plumbers got tired of doing it the old way and thought of a way to make it easier on themsleves.
dumbasses, its designed for someone who has never done it before, therefore old school does not exist for them. Also, I am yet to find a plumber who gives a shit and actually takes as much care as a DIY does so maybe they don't know your methods which are all different but at least they're getting guidance and taking care in their work.
You guys are idiots to make up your own detail. Read what is code. Work to code. Then after a few years start thinking on your own.

@StarrTile No Pre-slope? Water seeping through your mortar will sit on your flat liner and never migrate to your drain weeps. Bacteria heaven!
