i personally see no problem with the word retard as its meaning is to stop, to hinder or to make slow ,it's people who have taken it & turned it into a derogatory term for people with a mental illness which upsets me, i believe that its not words that are the problem its the context in which they are used, i've told someone im being retarded when i've done something like put my t-shirt on backwards as im hindering myself, i've reduced using it since it become a popular insult like "that's gay"

I saw this video and also saw his HS speech and I was in tears because all I could think about was my son who has Downs and autism. It is true, he loves unconditionally and I live in fear of the day I will have to explain what the word retard means to him or his siblings. It cuts me to the bone whenever I hear this word being used and I wish that people, even those within our family, realize that he has feelings too. Thank you so much.
