I think we were trying to be ironic, not racist. It was weird seeing the west trying to lure China as a developing market in the late 70's after demonizing them a decade earlier. Is Oceania our ally or enemy this week ? The lyric 'ten billion people like you and me' is pretty inclusive, racist ideology aims for the opposite outcome I think.

It's interesting how he thought that being British he was totally entitled to riches and fame in Vancouver, yet he blamed other people for seemingly doing the same thing, just because they were Chinese. I can't even describe how much I loved this band as a 13-year-old. It felt so unfair when they stopped making music. Now when I look back and actually listen to the lyrics, I see they're full of negativity, and in this case, racism. Now I see why they couldn't last.
@BayviewFinch First off, there is no racism. God created two people and we ALL came from them so that's strike one. Secondly, I would say that what The Payola$ are conveying in this song, whether negative or not, was at the time HIGHLY PROPHETIC of what actually happened. You were right to like them in the first place and just got screwed up along the way. You had more sense when you were 13...
@SkeebWilcox - Do yourself a favour. Find the lyrics, print them out, and show them to someone unfamiliar with The Payola$. I like the band, but I just find it unfortunate that this song is so racist. I'm sure whoever reads the lyrics will see that too. Vancouver has always had people from Asia living there. That happened WAY before Mr. Hyde came along as a British immigrant. There were already multi-generational Canadians of Chinese heritage. You're sounding racist yourself.
@BayviewFinch Did you not read my post? AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED, THERE IS NO RACISM! There are just people. I treat everyone the same. Almost every ethnicity in existence has either been in my house or my church and I have welcomed them one and all. All I said was the song was very prophetic in it's pointing out of how one culture was was being affected by another culture. "The only racists are the ones that say racism exists". May God help you...
@SkeebWilcox - YES, I READ YOUR POST. CONGRATULATIONS ON THE USE OF ALL-CAPS. God always helps me, thanks. I certainly don't need your personal blessings. OK. So you're not "racist", you're "culture-ist."
Notice the difficulty Paul Hyde is having with his axe. He admitted some years later that he had no clue how to play guitar at the time. They made him do it for the video.
So so glad to see this posted. I remember watching for it on the video show that would come on at midnight on Fridays on Cable 10. This song was the unofficial anthem at my high school. Thanks, justmefilm. You made this van east kid very happy.
Used to play this ALL the time on Friendly City Rock, WTCS, Fairmont, WV. If this came out today it would put 95% of the songs released this year to shame...

They look like they are having a blast. That certainly comes through in the music as well.

Who would have guessed Bob Rock would go on to produce bands like Metallica...

Isn't this band and Bob producing the majority of the Vancouver Punk scene the reason that bands like Metallica hired him?

Great song, I've had it stuck in my head for the last few days. They don't make these kinds of power pop nuggets anymore.
