Of course is locked down! you just blocked all the cubes that CAN spawn a blaze from the spawner. You can do the same without the torches, or the huge structure. Just 4 on each side, 3 squares tall counting the spawner (torches do count).

If you want to make it "funny" just do a torch sandwich, or a dirt, sand, dirt thing. That blocks it too. Once it's locked (and that way is MUCH MUCH FASTER, you can build whatever you want around.

i think you should be able to craft a nether furnace with cobble and netherrack and smelt magma cream into magma ingots and use blaze rods as stick to create Blaze Tools which are better than gold in it's mining speed and better than diamond in it's strength but worse than iron in its durability. (you can make flaming arrows with blaze flint (made from smelted blaze rods)
