I got my makeup done for a dance for free at an Urban Decay counter because I bought a few products. The "makeup artist" spent about 20 minutes on my face, caking me in concealer and drag like eyeshadow. It was horrible, I had to go home and take it all of and start again! hahaha. I'm defo going to get a mac makeup artist for prom though :)

I made an appointment at Sephora for my prom last year, because MAC was booked, but then MAC's schedule opened up so I ended up making a SECOND appointment. I remember calling Sephora to cancel my appointment and the chick on the phone was like thanking me so much for cancelling. It's just courteous, especially during prom time of year. If someone hadn't cancelled at MAC i wouldn't have gotten my appointment, so why would I take that away from someone else?

What if you didn't like the "service" the makeup artist gave. Once I had my makeup done "for free" and I would have been happy to buy the products she used, but I didn't really like what she did. I didn't tell it to her face but I certainly wasn't gonna buy the product if I didn't like it.

Not only does the Artist not meet sales goals, in some cases, they make comission so if they spend the time and nothing was purchased, that time could have been spent making extra money towards the paycheque by selling to customers who came to buy.

I don't blame the customer though, for the most part, they really have no freaking clue. I blame all the beauty magazines who drill it into the head's of consumers that they can get a "FREE makeover" with any company. :)

Thanks for these tips. I am a make up artist in a retail store and this does help. You failed to mention that when people return things, it comes off of the salesperson's sales for the day it is returned. That is how it works at my location anyway.

well my school doesn't have dances but my Grad [ Prom] is in a week and I was totally stuck makeup wise.

My dress is cute and girly but it has some intricate adornments. It's bright yellow with a strapless corset-ish top which has silver, yellow and black beading . the bottom is a knee high bubble skirt. I talked to a few makeup artists near my area and they all basically said a light smokey eye would work. just wondering if you had any thoughts?

Oh My God!!!! I didn't think people can be that inventive and rude, I would feel sooooo cheap and ashamed to return make-up products after someone has done me a favour by doing a beutiful makeup.

Plus people don't realise how lucky they are that they can return stuff. Where I come from (ex-communist country) you have to fight long and hard in almost every store to be able to return something and with makeup you can forget it. So I'm really sorry if this happened to you

Try looking up tips for your eye color! Sometimes it doesn't look good when you match your clothes with your make up, but not all of the time, sometimes it does work and sometimes it doesn't, so go for your eye color for example:

Brown/ Hazel eyes: Try a brown beige, neutral tan, or a charcoal gray smokey eye

Blue/Gray eyes: Try a silver or gold, metallic colors look really nice, or a taupe or plumy purple

Green Eyes:Coppers, golds, plums, and chocolate tone browns

I once went to a make-up shop to buy some popping colour eyeshadow. At first the woman was all nice and helpful and helped me pick some colours out and I asked if she could show me some ways of applying them and she was like "sure, no problem", So I went and bought the eyeshadow and as soon as the till closed she completely changed and was like "no, I can't help you with your make-up"
