CF105,TSR2 and the B49 were scrapped because of orders from IDIOTS! I remember when McNamara suggesting 2 models of the F111, one version for the air force and one version for the navy. It did NOT work. General dynamics developed a titanium wing box when all that was wrong were the poor quality of the wing forging. When the quality was brought up to were it should have been all was fine. One of the problems with the F111 was engine unstarts caused by the disruption of air at the air intakes!
We are Britain! We are good at nothing, oh hold on we are world leaders in a couple of fields, Pull the plug, quick befor anyone notices we are good at something!
This is a typical story of how the british govenment behave in a disgraceful way to anything that is an a innovation and i have no doubt that the tsr2 would have been a ultimate success story if the government had continued to fund it they never have the vision and are always back biting and as been said before they are only focused on greed This is why alot of people who have the ability to create things move to the usa Because history has shown that they are willing to support new projects !
0:34 I think its sad that he still doesn't understand what he cost Britain in terms of technical triumph. The government wonders why it has such an uninterested society. Every time the British people bring something to the world to be proud of such as this the TSR.2, Concorde, the Vulcan etc they take it away from us. You can only take so much away from society before it gives up on trying I think we've sadly reached that point :(
@RRM22 We (Australia) still have the F111 in service, so quite possibly we would have still had the TSR-2 (or its final designation) in service too. The F111 was/is an extremely capable aircraft and despite the US retiring her, they still requested we deploy an F111 squadron in Iraq and Afghanistan for certain missions.
Roy Jenkins was being disingenuous here suggesting the British high-tech firms concentrated too much on advanced products. What he wanted was to transfer our design engineering to his European fantasy of a European aviation industry to compete with the Americans and the Soviets on an equal footing. The low-tech market was already over-crowded anyway. He also killed off our space programme on the grounds of cost but favoured the Euro Space Agency instead. Plenty of dosh found for that though.
ironicly some of the tsr2 team went on to build the apt-e the 1st tilting train also way ahead of its time. this project was also scraped by goverment? it would be good if polotitions were held accountable for there actions, maybe then they would think of there country before there pocket with there bribes and payoffs?
The similarities of the overall program and the suspisions of those involved following cancellation are very similar to the Avro Arrow program that took place in Canada during the same era. Curiouser and curiouser.
@Cubcariboo ..i though the same. remember a movie about Avro -Canada's Arrow. it was starring Dan Aykroid. i think the name was "the flight of the arrow"
@Cubcariboo I once heard that the Avro company were full of KGB spies, and in fact many of the designs of the arrow ended up becoming the Mig-25. The Arrow production line was stopped on demand of the US government once the CIA had found out.
@Oldbmwr100rs I recently came across a film called "There never was an Arrow" about the plane, and sadly it's story parallels the TSR-2. Avro proposed it to the government at the time, built the plane and was in flight testing when the canadian government was changes at re-election,and surprise, it was the new "labour" party that went on the warpath to destroy every trace of the plane in much the same way. Seems that leftists have issues with people having pride in their country.
@Oldbmwr100rs There is a certain element of truth in what you have said here. This actually exposed itself with the development of Concord where the designed and technology behind it was being leaked to the Russians. That's why Concordski looked just like Concord, shame about Concordski crashing though.
TSR-2 was murdered by Politicians first- Look at the adjectives used in defending the scrapping of the project: "...expensive" and "....cheaper, sooner". It wasn't competition from the F-111 that killed TSR-2, it was competition from Social Welfare and National Health. Britain used to make things, they don't anymore, and America is following right along the same pattern forty years later.
many thanks for uploading this fascinating documentary. To say it all stinks of fish is an understatement, I'm off to Duxford to lay a wreath........per adua ad astra
" British governments not valuing a thriving aerospace industry"....What thriving industry of any description has any British government ever supported?
Exactly...I'm an American and I think it's appalling what Britain does especially when it comes to the aircraft industry. TSR-2, Vulcan, and of course Concorde are just some to mention. Britain was ahead of America in many ways...but they caved in to our suggestions...Such a bad idea on Britains part.
@nipplebrush I'm not one to subscribe to the "government is the problem" line that plagues too many of our intellectual pygmies in America, but you cannot do anything but describe British governments of this time as incompetent. Completely incompetent when it comes to looking after to the industries and the workers of Britain. Unfortunately we now have this same problem in America.
it was flexible but it was also far stronger than it looked
i feel genuine anger having watched these vids i knew they ordered all the hardware to be scrapped but i didnt know they bin all the video/pictures they could get hold of somebody somewhere (in my mind undoutadly a lying polotician) wanted the tsr2 erased from history completely and that disgusts me!!
Bloody clueless politicians killed a great British aircraft to appease the American government and allow their aircraft industry to rule the roost, just like the Avro arrow in Canada a bloody shame is it any wonder the GREAT has been knocked off of Briton.
My thanks for uploading this Documentary on the BAC TSR-2 Eagle.
God bless the Great Men who Designed / Built & flew her, the same to those who insured that this Beautifull & Revolutionary Aircraft will never be forgotten.
At least their are still two of the 17 TSR-2's still in existance (which are in perfectly restorable condition ;)
Maybe one day we shall see one of XR119's Sister planes given back the chance to Shine
that she was denied, as long as the support can be brought to bare.

What an incredible aeroplane, if they had gone ahead I wonder if they would still be in service today?
And it just seems mad to spend most of the money getting so close, and then bin everything.
