  • Like Tony is quoted as saying "that's a bunch a white anally retentive shit". I love this clip. I love Vinnie's playing. This guy makes the Five Peace Band peaceful.......

  • first time I see McLaughlin using this guitar...

  • You may not prefer Vinnie but he is truly one the most accomplished drummers in the world. I happen to like Brian Blade and Vinnie. I couldnt pick one over the other as I couldnt with many drummers. Everyone is unique as people and so are their styles. Enjoy and learn from them all Learn to trust your own voice and you will find true happiness.

  • From DRUM! 2003 article with Vinnie about this whole matter. "Some cleverly rhetorical person might make a quasi-evil remark like, "Are you afraid to compete?" to which I would answer, no. There is no fear involved, there is no need. And compete against what? People like you or they don't. If they like somebody else, what are you going to do? There are things that we just can't control, and the sooner we come to terms with that, the better off we are."

  • I've heard both versions of FPB and I vastly prefer Blade's drumming. Vinnie's raucous style fits well on the louder, more rock fusion tunes like Raju but he doesn't have the delicacy to handle softer jazz pieces like The Disguise or Spirit Rides. His drumming on the latter is awkwardly loud, uninspired, stiff, and he has such a bad tendency to overplay. If there's any bad side to Blade, it's that he occasionally loses the groove from getting too experimental, but that's hardly a flaw.

  • @ArtVandalay666 Brian Blade losing the groove??? What blasphemy... Hahahaa... Jk... Yea, he might lose the groove from being really experimental. But like you pointed out, "that's hardly a flaw." I completely agree with you. I learned long ago that groove doesn't just keeping time or feel. Its about the emotions one expresses with all functions of music bringing it to the climax of a tune so that it feels spiritual. To me Brian's drumming = spiritual.

  • i don't know why there's so much confusion over Blade's and Vinnie's playing styles. It so simple if you think about it.

    ONE IS BLACK

    ONE IS WHITE

    and it shows.

  • @samiegfunk1 hahaha im gonna take that as being sort of tongue-in-cheek. but it's also sort of true

  • Thanks Brian!!!

  • mclaughlin best guitarist alive?

  • @nicolas932 definitly one of the most distinct and original sounding!!!!

  • brian's at the top of a new bread of players that are taking music to new levels.

and i love how happy he is when he's playing...

    it's infectious!

  • chipobata???? wth???? dude... close ur eyez ( too much time in books ), and open up ur ears for crying out loud and shut up!!! pleeezzeee!!! Brian is playing the gig as he is supposed to, like Brian, Vinnie plays the gig his way........THATZ ALL THERE IS!!!! Stop with the over analytical mumbo jumbo........they're both great drummers, who thankfully play nothing alike, & they both sound great on this gig, just enjoy it, stop ANAL-lyzing it!!

  • For what I've heard in this video and other few presentations, Brian does it like DeJohnette could have, playing "micro-grooves" that add up to the texture of the instant, and does not trascend it by the development of long phrasing.

  • @chipobata VERY INTERESTING OBSERVATION, I THINK YOU HIT THE NAIL WITH THAT ONE, BLADE DOES IS USE "MICRO-GROOVES", WHICH ARE FLEXIBLE TO ADAPTATION, IT IS A TOTAL DIFFERENT APPROACH FROM THE LINEAL-POLYRITHMIC STYLE OF VINNIE, I STILL KEEP LEARNING SO MUCH, THERE ARE SO MANY GREATS TO LEARN FROM.....TOO MANY!

  • In my opinion Vinnie adds more to the creation of long lasting, overlaping musical phrases. This is a concept very much explored by McLaughlin, beaceus of his love for Indian metrics and polyrythms. In this sense I find a powerfull conecction between the use of time and bar-overwhelming between in this guys, including Kenny Garrett. (continues)

  • i did not see the show but i' m an abolute fan of brian blade and used to be the biggest fan of vinnie ! it s both two big parts of drums history !

before having any opinion , we just have to be more respectfull !!

and try to have something to expose to critics and feel what it creates !!

  • Vinnie Colaiuta barfing out endless crap?!?!?! Spoken like a true jazz nazi. Brian Blade and Vinnie Colaiuta are both geniuses in their own rights. There are people who may choose one over the other, but to say a comment like "the crap Vinnie barfs out" is a true disrespect to the individuality of the art of music, a disregard for musical personality and an overall outrage. I hope you're not a musician "qwerty9034" because you'd be a poor excuse for a musician based on your comments alone.

  • oh brian blade is such a genius. i visited a concert of the five peace band in salzburg, Austria but there was vinnie colaiuta playing the drums.. i dont like this guy at all. it was a nice concert though

  • Cool indeed

  • I'm not out to bash vinnie, but Brian gives this group such a cool sound. They were incredible in my town. You could tell Kenny was digging Brian.

  • My God, they sound 50 times better with Brian Blade. Some music is finally coming out of the drums, as opposed to the endless crap that Colaiuta barfs out.

    Thank You Brian!!!

  • yes!

  • I love you, i saw them with Calli-shithead and i didn't pay attention to the drums, the rest of the band owned but brian brings it to a new level.

  • sorry, but I don't agree at all! Maybe you don't like vinnie'style (very few people can agree with you i suppose) but I think it's a little too much saying that "he barfs out endless crap" ^_^

  • @qwerty9034 I think maybe Vinnie's endless crap is a little too high level for you to attempt to contemplate...?

  • @qwerty9034 Are you kidding? Listen to "River: The Joni Letters", Herbie Hancock. Colaiuta's playing on that album is amazing - so colourful, held back and graceful. You'd be hard-pressed to find a drummer who has such dexterity and control with such musicality.

  • This was an awesome show!!!!

Anyone who hasn't checked this band out yet please do!

  • I'm seeing these guys tonite!!!!!

  • Wow, do you have more?
