Good compilation. However, a lot of these were not one it wonders:
Kajagoogoo had 2 hits (Big Apple), as did Danny Wilson (Second Summer of Love). Climie Fisher had several hits, but all off the one album. Living in a box had loads of hits and their biggest (Room in your heart) is not even the one you picked to include.
Are you a total retard ! . Midnight oil ( beds are burning ) had a huge amount of songs that climbed to the top of the charts int the 80's and nineties !
@Beefboy616 Kajagoogoo's only hit as a group was "Too Shy," which is why it's included here. "Neverending Story" was a solo hit for the group's lead singer Limahl.
Sorry, but no. Just like there were hits by The Commodores, there were also hits ONLY credited to Lionel Ritchie. Similarly with Raydio and Ray Parker.
Makes perfect sense. It isn't who made up the band, but rather how the band was billed for that particular hit.
Thanks for the vid it brought back many memories. To prevent others from being deied my opinion :) I agree with comments that Midnight Oil is not a 1HW as described - Wikipedia "a one-hit wonder is a person or act known mainly for only a single success. The term is most often used to describe music performers with only one hit single". Also for those who have not engaged in the political arena you really shouldnt judge him but rather challenge his intent, influence or result (if any).
Let's give credit to those bands that actually produced good rock over the years. . How about KISS? or Judas Priest? Just seen them on the EPITAPH tour. The longest and best Priest show ever.I will say Rob had more energy and stage presence in the 90's, but hell the dude is 60 and sings better then ever ! You want one hits? Search "On my own again" by Steeler or "Man in my shoes" by Stingray. Then hit 707 or Touch. This is my hobby!
Brings up a very good point on "good band" or "best energy" or similar titles, and those are valid arguments elsewhere, but the main point here is 1 hit wonders in the U.S. during the 80's.
A good song may not be the same as a hit song and vice versa. When most people refer to hit song of the 80's they mean going to or near the top of Billboard. More based on record sales than an opinion on quality.
I love checking out compilations like this as there will always be a few songs I might've forgotten about, or have been searching for years to find because I thought maybe someone else sung them, or just flat out didn't know who did. Thx for posting.
The Icicle Works were brill, LOVE Kajagoogoo, GTR rocked, the Waterfront album is brill, the Climie Fisher song is cool, Rob Fisher R.I.P, Device were wicked should have been massive, Living In A Box were Fab.
parachute pants, drinking maddog 20/20, getting high on pot from a dug-out one hitter, chicks with big hair and tight jeans with leg warmers. AHHH the eighties... I could've died in the end ('89) and felt like I had left the best life there ever was. I was win-ning!
Because many of those bands/singers had just a hit on the Billboard Top 40 it doesn't mean they didn't have other hits elsewhere, especially the British ones.
Icicle Works was a one-hit wonder in the US, and as the description reads, this video covers bands that were one hit wonders in the United States. Hell in the US Icicle Works barely qualifies as one hit wonders.
when in rome had a great album and "heaven knows' was also a minor hit, but most trakcs were at least decent. They had record label issues, thus never really promoted right. sad, but great album nonetheless.
Love Changes Everything was a song written for Rod Stewart (which many thought was actually singing) but he turned it down. Not sure what he was thinking since he ended up making a bunch of crappy music in 90's.
actually Icicle Works had a minor, albeit very, hit with Understanding Jane, which is actually much better than Whisper to a Scream, but most people probably wanted new wave instead of rock. Listen to Understanding Jane
YEAH, I LIKED KAJA GOO GOO, @2;39-2:40, WHOA!! I Used to think the name of that song was "Don't Turn Around" I LOVED "Beds Are Burning" YEAH Timex Social Club, When In ROMe, (I used to think the name of that song was I promise You) I LOVE this song, YEAH I remember The Breakfast Club I had that Album
Can you believe the group at 2:42 - After The Fire - opened for Van Halen on the '83 Diver Down Tour? Poor bastards were nearly booed off the stage when I saw em...
yes gay they were ...at least most of the groups were gay that made number one,but hey they could sing and do great albums, and by the way most of these groups did way more than just one song or album but may never had made it to the states i mean whats good music to them, most of there singers or groups come from different country's but they claim there as theres lol
you should really listen to the MUSIC from the 80's. it was fun and creative. one hit wonders or not. the music was amazing. please dont tell me that you are a fan of the crap thats on the radio today?

At 1:21 Aldo Nova, as a kid this song would have me imagine what a big city was like before I ever saw one. When I purchased my first car guess where I drove to, although I was grounded for getting home really late it was worth every minute.
1.Icicle Works - Whisper to a Scream 2.Benny Mardones - Into the Night 3.Aldo Nova - Fantasy 4.Kajagoogoo - Too Shy 5.Ollie and Jerry - There's No Stopping us 6.After the Fire - Der Kommissar 7.GTR- When the Heart Rules the Mind 8.Danny Wilson- Mary's Prayer 9.Midnight Oil - Beds are Burning 10.Waterfront - Cry 11.Opus - Live is Life 12.Time Social Club - Rumors 13.Climie Fisher- Love Changes Everything 14.Device - Hanging on a Heart Attack

@Bunny50000 Completely agree...ambience, haircut, gesture...with a step back (20 years after), the 80's were a particular musical platform...this style was surely affected by everyday life...funny how music evolution is.
Opus should have been a no-hit wonder, "Rumors" was a GREAT song, When In Rome got a second life from Napoleon Dynamite....rightfully so, a good song.
I was a Chinese boy growing up in Singapore back in the 80s. I was really into music from the West, especially the UK. I still remember all the bands in this video except for GTR. Never heard of them or any of their music. Some of the bands featured may be one hit wonders in the US but back in the UK, they're actually quite successful.
@crashx30 It took me 2 seconds to research and confirm that Aldo Nova had only one top 40 hit. Definitely a one hit wonder. I was way into music in the 80s and only remember that one song. Unless you are from their home country, Canada, you would only know them for Fantasy.
all the songs after 3;40 maybe 4 of them were hits in us...midnight oil, when in rome, breakfast club and timex social club!! the restmight have been top 100 but certainly not top 40!!!!
ok these are one hit wonders in the US midnight oil only had one hit hear so stop complaining and der komishnar was orginally made by falco by a remake was done in english by atf so stop complaining
Can anyone tell me the duo's name: the singer played the synthsizer, and the second was a mime shaved head, chains. partial lyrics: "Don't give up...:, I think.
wow..I almost like all the one hits..my fav are after the fire and into the night, and and midnight oil and genius of love..what?? no Billy ocean or The Outfield? More Breakfast club!!...thx..lol
midnight oil were absolutely not ,one hit wonders. kajagoogoo, with a name like that didnt even deserve a hit. and the people talking about what constitutes a hit. are playing semantics, talking like lawyers. everyone knows what a one hit wonder is.
@xXKayn3Xx i will prove you wrong: Motley Crue Guns N' Roses Run DMC Michael Jackson U2 Ozzy Osbourne Iron Maiden Def Leppard Poison Tom Petty John Melencamp Whitesnake Tears for Fears Talking Heads Bon Jovi should i continue?
@fjmi I won a contest in 1998 on "Big in Germany", a program that was broadcast worldwide on Deutsche Welle TV. Ingo, the host wanted to know who came out with Der Kommissar first. Of course I chose Falco. I won a Big in Germany T-shirt that was too small but I also won the X-files cologne. What a trip!
@fjmi Correction they used the music to Der Komissar and the Words 'alles klar Herr Kommissar' the rest of the lyrics are in english and do not directly correspond to Falco's Version
Most of these so called one hit wonders list are subject to the author's locations. Those of us that lived in media areas like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, San Diego know way more hits by all these so called On Hit Wonders. Alternative radio stations like KROQ and 91X didn't freely contribute their request lists and song rankings to the national buildboard rankings. Only trendy radio stations like KIIS FM did and they were usually 6 months behind the times on new alternative songs.
to be considered a hit the song has to be in the top 40 for at least 3 weeks (according to billboard who do these sort of things), which excludes a lot of songs.
Is no one reading the video description box??? It clearly states this is "A collection of video snipits of singers and bands from the 80s that only had one major hit in the United States (they might have been more popular in Europe, Australia, etc..)" unquote people!
Midnight Oil cannot be classified as a one hit wonder. Other than that - awesome list.

Never heard of them or any of their music. Some of the bands featured may be one hit wonders in the US but back in the UK, they're actually quite successful.

aldo isn't a 1 hit wonder either lol can you say research
crashx30 1 year ago
@crashx30 It took me 2 seconds to research and confirm that Aldo Nova had only one top 40 hit. Definitely a one hit wonder. I was way into music in the 80s and only remember that one song. Unless you are from their home country, Canada, you would only know them for Fantasy.
VHagar5150 1 year ago
@VHagar5150 a "hit" in the UK is classed as Top 75 in the charts.

wesleyandstacie 1 year ago
....doesn't the term "one-hit wonder" mean the song had to be a hit? Some of these songs suck...I don't care where you're from.

@8robmart8 "no Billy ocean or The Outfield? " Billy Ocean had a string of hits in the 70's and 80's. Check him on Wikipedia.

midnight oil were absolutely not ,one hit wonders. kajagoogoo, with a name like that didnt even deserve a hit. and the people talking about what constitutes a hit. are playing semantics, talking like lawyers. everyone knows what a one hit wonder is.

Midnight Oil were NOT one hit wonders!!!

"after the fire" is a copy of falcos "Der Kommissar".... no wonder they were a "one hit wonder"...
fjmi 1 year ago 17
@fjmi I won a contest in 1998 on "Big in Germany", a program that was broadcast worldwide on Deutsche Welle TV. Ingo, the host wanted to know who came out with Der Kommissar first. Of course I chose Falco. I won a Big in Germany T-shirt that was too small but I also won the X-files cologne. What a trip!
Lovelymiz 11 months ago
@fjmi Correction they used the music to Der Komissar and the Words 'alles klar Herr Kommissar' the rest of the lyrics are in english and do not directly correspond to Falco's Version
thehole4472 10 months ago
@fjmi ATF were a three hit wonder in the UK: "One Rule For You" (no, 40) -
"Laser Love (no. 62) and "Der Kommissar" (no. 47) and they are STILL performing and are still VERY good!
joesophie90 9 months ago
@fjmi after the fire was falco
moloci21 5 months ago
Falco's version of Der Kommisar is a billion times better. Also, midnight oil wasn't a one hit wonder imo.
sleaze12 1 year ago 2
@sleaze12 they were in the USA...i know they're super popular in Australia, but here the only hit was "Beds are Burning"
imaRobot1688 1 year ago
@imaRobot1688 - Maybe it should be titled "US One hit wonders from the 80's"
piginasack 1 year ago
And you need to fix this video. "Der Kommisar" whether it is in english or in german (the original version) is by Falco, not by After the Fire.
mondraake32 1 year ago
Most of these so called one hit wonders list are subject to the author's locations. Those of us that lived in media areas like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, San Diego know way more hits by all these so called On Hit Wonders. Alternative radio stations like KROQ and 91X didn't freely contribute their request lists and song rankings to the national buildboard rankings. Only trendy radio stations like KIIS FM did and they were usually 6 months behind the times on new alternative songs.
mondraake32 1 year ago 2
@mondraake32 i think you're completely right...
to be considered a hit the song has to be in the top 40 for at least 3 weeks (according to billboard who do these sort of things), which excludes a lot of songs.
imaRobot1688 1 year ago
@Annie1962 the are 1-Hit WOnders in AMERICA - not AUSTRALIA.
johnjms2 1 year ago
Is no one reading the video description box??? It clearly states this is "A collection of video snipits of singers and bands from the 80s that only had one major hit in the United States (they might have been more popular in Europe, Australia, etc..)" unquote people!
