Found out about this series when I lived in Australia (90-97) and really enjoyed it on VHS (although at that time PAL was the format) Was John in Sharpe's series? Is he still around!!
@usmctanks1 Jon English is still kicking, he performs occasionally but a lot of young people here in Australia remember him more as a TV actor as well as a stage performer rather than a singer
The DVD is currently available at all ABC Shops and online, for overseas people. quality is not so hot on standard dvd, if you use the HD component on HDMI oncom your flatscreen, it will come up better. Love the accuracy and the truth about our country in this series
This came on the radio, and my dad who is 59 years old AND NEVER watches television unless it's winterolympics or wintersports said "Ohh, listen to this song! It's from a great series that I watched when I was young"
Well, anyone that says" dislike" do really think that their matter of choice is truly the perfect choice.
If you say you dislike music it just tell that you are ignorant and dont believe in the feeling about taste will always be different.People that respect other people`s choice are the truly humble souls.....
@elerownat Jon English is touring around Australia with a rock band. It's called Jon English and The Rock Show. I've been to see it twice. He's still got it. :)
Wonderful memories, I played the thief that stole Mary's and Jonathon's cows in the final episode "Windfall Summer", and yes I still feel guilty! but I feel very proud to have been part of such a great milestone in Australian television history.
I use to play this beautiful song on my recorder when I was only 9 and my mum loved me playing this song, only wish I could remember the notes so I could pass it on to my daughter.
to all those wondering about the series... apparently you can get it from ABC Shops but like all the old classic series it's not cheap... i'm certainly going to get it... just d/loaded the song from itunes :)
How can "anyone" dislike this song? It's like someone saying they dislike simple truths.

@tootster1 he said during the break we need to go to the toilets and get wasted at the bar . then he was like oh just a reminder the womens toilet paper is out so youll need to do a handstand under the hairdryer.
Thanks for that 13hazza. I thought that would be the case, but the thought that i was meaning to convey, was that telecasters seldom replay mini series like this "on air" anymore. The 80's was a fertile era on Australian TV for this and associated telemovies/mini-series. Remember "Drum", "Mandingo" and "Bankok Hilton", to name but three other examples. Probably "too graphic" to replay nowdays, in the "politically correct" times that we live in nowdays....
I'm an Aussie of Irish and Scottish descent. It must be the Celt gene but just as with bagpipes which make me edgy, enthralled, joyous (and sometimes teary) this song about a poor convict expressing his love for his true love despite his abject poverty at the hands of the redcoats in a new colony is beautiful. If I ever meet a woman who isn't a worthless slut, or crazy in the coconut, this'll be my contribution to wedding songs!
@fknucklewit Good luck with that - 99% of Australian women are sluts, crazy and princesses - of 20 or so decent hardworking guys I know - 5 can't meet a decent woman at all, 10 married one of the aforementioned crazy princess and got divorced within 1 to 5 years and 5 gave up and went for decent down to earth asian women.
Something went seriously wrong in Australia in the 90's - a social experiment gone wrong that ruined all the women here.
@MonXxSuun hey Im just a scientist that observes facts and statistics - and what I say is what i see all around - - and I deduce by your over-reaction to my comment that you must be a crazy Australian gen X/Y princess.
@arizaphale Agreed. Stoked to buy the DVD in 2006. Money well spent. So much SHIT on TV for last 10 years, yet this classic gets ignored. I can only presume the actual recording quality from 1978 doesn't meet broadcast standard. Does anybody recall if this series ever got another airing after 1978?
I just have one thing to say.... at the risk of sounding racist, it wasnt just the blacks who suffered at the hands of our ancestors...my god... what the red coats did to our own folk who were just trying to get by in an alien country and had no choice but to follow protocol (or what they said)
@WendyQLD Same here,I was only a kid when this song and TV series come out and I loved it.I remember singing this song in the class room all those year's ago.

I tell the world of the love we shared. We will always have that love too my darling Alison. Such as it is... Until we meet again..... may god watch over you. Rest in peace my love.

thanks to the uploader great clip and clear version of the song. thanx jenmb02, I was trying to remember the dates, I thought to myself late 70's or early 80's, brings back (distant) memories. really invokes that colonial / seafaring atmosphere with the flutes etc check out Lost Islands for some more reminiscing and enchantment!!
Just 2 days ago Jon English was at Sydney Domestic airport and everyone was making a fuss.. I didnt get to see him but my son had no idea who he was... dang kid..lol
Will always love this mini series, a wonderful part of our history, I also remember walking the paths that this was made on at Old Sydney Town.

thanks to the uploader great clip and clear version of the song. thanx jenmb02, I was trying to remember the dates, I thought to myself late 70's or early 80's, brings back (distant) memories. really invokes that colonial / seafaring atmosphere with the flutes etc check out Lost Islands for some more reminiscing and enchantment!!

Hey kazrabbit. He goes: "yellow and brown, blue as the sky, red as my blood as green as your eyes" . The are two eyes so there are two green ones.

I'd love to see Jon English's BEATING THE BOARDS video. I think the year was circa 1985-1989. Can't find it anywhere...
