Historically Robert was loyal to her, and they remained friends until his death. This is simply drama. Yes she did get angry when learning of his second marriage, but whether she got mad because she loved him, or because she didn't know about it, I am not sure. This was 500 years ago, and all those people are dead, so it's not like you can ask them. History is always tricky, with the peiople gone there's only the documents, but who writes the true documents, that is the question.
@Evan7893 That was very common in those days-dentistry was not known. Teeth have even been described as brown in documents for some historical figures.
In a time of beheadings, disembowelment, and public burning at the stake, why anyone would mess with a king or queen's love interest is beyond me. It's just not worth it!
she has no right to be jealous really bc he wanted her and she rejected him so what did she expect that he would just mope around for the rest of his life
@fleurgi her rejections of him are purely for the drama of this movie. it's well documented in real history that they were indeed lovers and they often spent their nights together. She rejected him formally as husband, in order to maintain control over her life and her country. but, as lovers, she was right to be pissed at his deception- don't you think? :)
@fleurgi You see, it wasn't that he had moved on. Thats not what upset her. They pretended nothing was going on between them whilst in her service. She would have been upset perhaps, but not angry if they had just been honest.
@Banderson906 As well you can see she did go see him even though she believed him to be faking illness. She still did care. She was just being human. Perhaps the most human Monarch the world ever had.
hahaha..she told that bitch! I love they way HRH says "cut your clothe..though I doubt it will be imported now.." It's good to be the Queen, and she had it coming..gosh women can be nasty.
What is this stupid cliché about French people???? We don't eat frogs!!! I mean I never ate a frog and I think it's disgusting! It's not the only meal in France! Grrrrr!
"Ma petite genouille"( "My little frog", as she call him) ;)
Yeah, it is a weird and stupid stereotype, but somebody already mentioned earlier that he was called 'my little frog' by her because he once sent her a frog shaped earring.
So i am curious...when he is saying to be thankful that it was "her" and that she has settled for a loveless marriage, is he being honest about that? Like he really loves elizabeth and not lettice?
I know to be historically accurate would be difficult considering there are so many versions and most likely no one truly knows, but what, according to history, do we know about these two?
Partly he might be saying that, but he's also being polite: the way people spoke back then was different from today's. After all, Elisabeth IS the queen, and if he'd just said: "Well, since you didn't marry me, I found someone else", he'd been hanged. Personally I find Elisabeth's conduct rather cruel, though understandable. She resembles Henry in this area, in the way she acts when love ends: later she had another favourite executed.
oh geez...that sound he makes a 4:39 *bites lip* :O

It was because of a frog earring he sent it. I don't think it had anything to do with his being french.

EPISODE 3 AND 4 HERE:
Go to surfthechannel (dot com) and type 'The Virgin Queen'. All 4 episodes are there in full.
Hans Matheson is great as the Earl of Essex and I love his entrance scene.
