you can say it sounds "dated" because of the recording techniques (tons of reverb/fx and synths), but that's not the same as cheese. now the videos may have been borderline cheese, but that's because music videos were still a relatively young art form, and not everyone had the eye for it.

Great song. It's amazing how a song can conjure up all kinds of poignant memories of the past. A movie can do that also. I wish it was the 1980s again. such a fun time for me with great music too.
With you all on that, mid ninties it went down the plug hole for me,I have been back peddling ever since, emotion and depth dont seem to be issue these days, just ipods and compressed music files that sound like shit,VINYL FOR EVER SUCKERS
This wasn't "cheese' at all. It was a great song. Had a definite dreamy ambiance. 1983 I think it was. There was a movie with the same title many years before.
Hey young wippersnappers, believe it or not, MTV used to have Music Videos. This was one I used to watch a lot. I taped it on my VCR from Friday Night Videos. Videos used to rock so much and this time frame, the early 80's will forever be gold to me.
for some reason when I hear this song i remember streets of my hometown, i think the blue skies of summer, a cool breeze, for that instant I am free and happy as when a child
...i have to agree with rbcurti, this voice was truly expressive, just listen to the greatest hits album, unbelievable :) ....i love that they were so popular down under, not so much here, the rest of the world knows good music....
When I was a child, I remember exactly where I was and what happened when JFK was killed, also MLK and RFK. I remember where I was and what I felt when the Challenger exploded. And I remember where I was and what I felt at the moment I heard Martha Davis had vocal nodules. I was devastated and rooted for her. She had the best, most expressive voice of any female vocalist all the way up to Grace Potter today. That is a long reign. And I miss them.
Only those of us that were born at the right time and lived in the 80's can really appreciate this kind of great music and so much more also. These idiots that bad mouth the 80's music are just that idiots. They know it was the best music but they are too stupid to admit it because the crap from the 90's and 2000's has warped their brains so bad that good quality music can't enter in.So all they can do is run their stinkin mouth thinking they are somebody when they are nothing.80's was tops baby!

It amazes me how some people call the 80's CHEESE when actually it was MOST probably the LAST DECADE when it was a PLEASURE to listen to the radio and sit and watch MTV for hours? the last ten years or more? NOTHING BUT GARBAGE!
@elsoda Not only were the 80s the last decade when it ws a plesure to listen to the radio & MTV actually mattered, I maintain it was the peak of the 20th Centry. Turning on the radio then was hit after hit after hit. Not like the pop crap that American Idol seems to generate... In fact, some of these 80s songs are still in heavy rotation on the radio now.
@elsoda I hate the radio these days. After being blessed with the 60's, 70's and 80's music, i can't call the crap thats out there today music. NO TALENT TRASH is more like it. Seems like 99% of the so called artists wouldn't be able to make it as a garage band seeing they can't play a giutar, drums Etc. Computer RAP crap just doesn't cut it..
I always thought it was a girl losing her virginity, hence the scene with everyone around her bed.. looking at her, judging her, as she felt the whole town seemed to know. However, I'm told I'm way off (makes sense to me, though... it happened one summer for me, too)

@KB4QAA Great song....all the 80s songs were great....and you're right each song brings back a memory of that wonderful decaed.....at least it does for me!! 80s RULE!!
I wish sometimes I could go back in time to when I was younger and have been an only child without a nasty, stupid, biatch sister and been from a more upper middle class family. Instead of being the awkward douche I was with the biatch sibling from hell I had and in the stupid family I was in. I would have appreciated growing up in the 80s more.
yes it's just a lil' cheesy... but i know other singles by the Motels who are even more full of cheese... quite original their new wave cheesy spray music.... or they could be called "the Mayonnaise Splash Affair" as well... as cool and original than an older band called... The Peanut Butter Conspiracy...
I think that i've found my vocation... to find real good name for bands... after some serious listening... (i've gag my ego before this mail...promess!)

oh for god sakes.....this is NOT cheesy.....its music of the time.....mediagod, you must be of a later time. even my own kids is in love with music from this era.....its not just YOUR opinion.....
I enjoy listening because, of course she has a nice voice but you can make out the words when she sings and you can get into the meaning of the song too. So many singers mask the lyrics when they sing and you have no idea what the heck they are saying.
THats Lewis from the Revenge of the Nerds!!! I thought i recognized his face!! They said in a magazine he had a ponytail and drove a harley before accepting the role on the Revenge of the Nerds!!!
agreeing with AmericanRuffian. I appreciate the upload mediagod, but you need to sit back and reevaluate the material. "Cheese" is a word that will be applied to what is being produced today. If you lived and loved in the 80's, you would recognize this material as being so on the mark. I know, I was there.
Martha Davis always reminded me of a Night club singer (Like Billy Holiday) then a Rock singer

CUANDO LAS CANCIONES SON COMO ESTA QUIERE DECIR QUE SIEMPRE SERAN APRECIADAS CON EL MISMO PUNTO DE VISTA SIN IMPORTAR EL TIEMPO QUE HAYA PASADO NI EL LUGAR EN QUE ESTEMOS.

For years I thought this was Til Tuesday. This lead sounds so much like Aimee Mann.

@NateSean I can see how that can happen. Aimee and Martha both have an awesome voice.

the motels-suddenly last summer is one of my favorite songs .gijoe 989.
gijoe989 6 months ago 2
I enjoy listening because, of course she has a nice voice but you can make out the words when she sings and you can get into the meaning of the song too. So many singers mask the lyrics when they sing and you have no idea what the heck they are saying.

This is better Cheese than the mouldy crap they're pumping out these days!

@Tarrant1976 Agreed !! , for the likes of me, I can,t fiqure out what todays music is trying to say .

@Tarrant1976 Good point bc even though 80s stuff is old, most of it hasn't gotten moldy with age.

We've still got an ice cream truck that comes 'round our neighborhood. The Motels hit #9 in Billboard, 11-19-83. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

@DaveWollenberg There are ice cream trucks still.

agreeing with AmericanRuffian. I appreciate the upload mediagod, but you need to sit back and reevaluate the material. "Cheese" is a word that will be applied to what is being produced today. If you lived and loved in the 80's, you would recognize this material as being so on the mark. I know, I was there.
RadioChief52 6 months ago
@RadioChief52 - totally agreed. And i was there too. 1983. Loved this song back then and still do today.
