What I also remember was a couple of weeks later when Spectacular Bid was to run in the Jockey Club Gold Cup against Temperance Hill, and shortly before Marshall Cassidy could announce it that day, a fan in the stand yelled "Spectacular Bid's Scratched!!" from that JCGC, with Cassidy then announcing that and that he had been retired. Is there any video of that JCGC?
I saw him win the big cap at Santa Anita, still the greatest , would have beat Secretariat on his best day. What a shame he didnt run in the gold cup at Belmont. I recall Bud Delp saying " he would have won by as far as a country boy can throw a stone! "

We have not seen a horse of Spectacular Bid's caliber since. I personally rank him at the top w Secretariat. It amazes me that people discount him because he did not win the TC. He was a champion at 2, 3, & 4. How many horses can claim that?
I stand corrected. Sharp Cat had a walkover in 1997 the same day a triple dead heat occured at Hollywood Park. The 'bid' will go down as one of the all time greats.
It seems ironic that Spectacular Bid is the only horse that was granted a walkover in the last 60 years. It just showed that NYRA and the other owners knew what a special horse he was.
Wow where did you get this? Awesome. I've been dying to see his Florida Derby win. The only time I've seen it was in this made about jockeys and a big part of it was on Ronnie Franklin.
Franklin rode him miserably in that race, but the Bid was such a great horse, Shaq could have rode him and he would still place. They don't make them like this anymore.
I have a large collection of old videotapes that are yet to be converted. Unfortunately, I don't have the '79 Florida Derby, but with any luck, I'll stumble across it. Ronnie Franklin was a very troubled young man that should be praised for his triumphs, but it's too bad he rode The Bid so badly in the Florida Derby and Belmont Stakes. With a better ride or with Shoemaker aboard, Bid certainly would have been a Triple Crown winner.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the comments.
This is a testament to such a great horse. There has been one walkover in the last 60 years. The NYRA and the other owners tipped their caps with such gesture.
I remember bringing a bulky battery operated TV to a football game in Los Angeles, so I could watch this race. A coed behind me was livid that I refused to switch the channel to the Dodger game so she could watch Fernando Valenzuela.
True story. I was laughing at her, thinking that she could dictate what I watched, after I lugged it to the Coliseum. She was trying to round up support from fellow students: "Can you believe that? He won't watch Fernando."
Sir, I always enjoy your interesting tales; this one was a particularly funny one. Strange how some bossy people think they can commandeer anything with enough "support." I'd rather watch The Bid anyday, although Fernando's screwball was pretty entertaining at the time.
Great video, cf1970. I didn't realize this walkover created such an uproar. I enjoy hearing the voice of Frank Wright, his unbridled passion for the sport and gentlemanly demeanor never failed to manifest itself on each and every horse racing telecast that he was a part of.
Agreed. I don't know if either of you have seen Wfight's post-mortem from the 1978 Belmont Stakes on CBS (after Chic Anderson's analysis and the commercial), but Wright's sum-up of that Affirmed-Alydar showdown was a classic of both observation and passion for the event. Excited? He sounded as if he were holding onto Affirmed's tail and flying toward Franklin Squareand, carrying Jack Whitaker with him. Great stuff...
No I have not seen that. Frank Wright had a passion for the sport. I've read the 'Shoe' was extremely nervous hoping not to fall off. Seems funny since he has been in some big time races.
The problem was here, the two other horses (besides Winter's Tale) who entered chose to scratch because they didn't want to battle for second to "The Bid" (which in a way was quite silly because they were guaranteed no worse than third money, which in those days was 12% of the purse, and more than I believe was the winner's share of a top flight allowance purse offered at the NYRA tracks at that time).
Yep, a lot of the crowd were upset there was no race. Sure, I would have been very disappointed too, but the booing was just silly; the circumstances were unfortunate with Winter's Tale getting hurt and the lack of a competitive field. Nobody really wanted to tangle with Bid! Shame it tarnished what was to be his final racing appearance.
Bid's fractions were 26 1/5, 24 1/5, 23 4/5, 24, and a terrific final quarter in 24 1/5. Very consistent, and impressive for a walkover!
First off all thank you for such a historical event that you have on video. Spectacular Bid has to be my favorite race horse.Way too underrated in the court of public opinion. I was hoping when you might find a copy of his Florida Derby win. I recently read the only book on him. It was great but way too short.
Hey there, I'm hangin' in, thank you for asking. Hope life is treating you well.
Yeah, the crowd was booing mainly because there was no actual race going on. Spectacular Bid ran all of his quarter miles in +/- 24 seconds, bar the first one, so what more could one ask for a paid workout?
The Bid is my second favorite horse, and one of the all time greats for certain.
Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate them very much. :D
The crowd booed because Bud Delp didn't run against Winter's Tale in the Marlboro. The booing was mild compared to some of some of insults that were hurled at Delp in the paddock prior to the race. For Delp to say he was "looking forward to running against Winter's Tale" is just obnoxious. Bid was a great horse, but I think most people had had their fill of Bud Delp by the time the horse retired.

There is not enough superlatives to compliment Spectacular Bid!

It's just a pleasure to watch this horse run. Maybe the greatest thoroughbred ever.

If Secretariat ran with 4 years was also a champion. And at 5, too. Unfortunately not left running in peak form.

I can't imagine why he had no competition.
Didn't anyone want 2nd or 3rd money if nothing
else? Secretariat never scared off all
competition. I always liked Bid, I had my
picture taken with him.

Hey, CF my friend. How are ya?
Well, I'm baffled as to why the crowd was booing.
Something to do with not being able to bet because the other horse couldn't run?
Anyway, gorgeous creature, that running machine named Spectacular Bid. Yes?
Thanks for this fabulous channel you put here for us. :-)
