Like, seriously. Chrono Trigger is LIGHT YEARS ahead of FFVI technologically and story-wise. Just...best RPG EVER, at least behind FFVII, anyway. lol.
You didn't give this game a 10?!?! WHY?!?!?!? SACRILEGE!!!!!!!
Actually I shouldn't say that, simply because I've never actually played its sequel, Chrono CROSS, so IDK if this game gets better or not. (I could never get it working in EPSXE, and I was a Nintendo kid at the time...I didn't have a PSX, and I accidentally skipped the 16-bit generation, much to my regret. I jumped straight from NES to N64.)
But fuck, when I played this game, I thought it kicked the ASS of even FFVI/FFIII!
I love this game its my favorite in my collection . But what I hate about the game is how whiny frogs past is when you talk to him both before and after getting the sword . It makes me wish they had a skip button for that part . Other than that no flaws in this game on of the greatest games ever made right up there with Mario Mega Man Donkey Kong and many other gaming icons . By the way can you do a galaga review that was my fav arcade game the 360 port ruined it though
this is my favorite game of all time. for whatever reason, ive never felt as connected to any video game characters as i do with the ones in chrono trigger. i feel like if squaresoft really knew what they were doing, theyd make a true sequel to this game. while, i did like chrono cross, it just didnt have the charm that this game did, and didnt quite live up to my expectations. FF sucks now, so in my opinion, a new chrono trigger game would revive the company.
@yopoke190 i think you should go back to your modern warfare 3 camping and quickscoping people cause this game is too hard for your trailer park life .......i hope your kids come out fine even though you married your 2nd cousin dumbfuck
@chronojeremy Dman FUCKIN strait. I am 29 and feel the same way. We are both sitting back and thinking that no other game will come along like this one. Maybe in ten of twenty years. We will be old when it happens. But that is the way of life. We will tell our kids about it and where we were when we discovered it. This game is the reason video games were invented. Now we have it, but can it ever be topped??? Hopefully once or twice more in this life. For me it was like being born again!
@midarkmind Hi I'm 28 and felt exactly the same as you. I'm not sure how many games supercede Chrono Trigger after it had been released in 1995 but to me Chrono Trigger is always the best in our mind. It meant a lot to our generation
From all these years I've been a gamer for all my life I never did play Chronotrigger before...until now, I've got two words to say about this game, " PURE EPIC!" I'm so mad at myself that I never played an RPG this awesome before, no wonder why people love this game.
Remember the Mother brain computer talking to Prometheus about destroying humanity as a plague on the world? Mind blowing. How can writers this brilliant exist and not be held up as gods? Why does "Twilight" reign supreme? Annoying.
This game came out when I was 15, and a friend and I remember renting it and staying up until the wee hours of the morning playing it. I couldn't think about anything else. I got it for the DS recently, and it's just as great as I remember it. I can't imagine any sane person not loving this game. And I was never a big RPG guy (although I do love some RPGs).
Probably in my top 3 favorite games of all time. I got it on my PSP so I can play it whenever, and when I hook it up to my TV I can spend hours upon hours playing. It's such a brilliant game. I'd say Suikoden 2 is almost tied with this game... suikoden 2 also has a great original soundtrack, an astounding story, and a rediculous amount of replay value due to the sheer number of available party members. Over 100 different possible party members. Both awesome games.
My first JRPG was Final Fantasy 6 and I really loved it. After that I tried several other games of that type, which were recommended, like "Lufia - Fortress of Doom" and "Illusion of Gaia". As far as I remember I finished all of these games, but none gave me any staying memories and rather paled next to FF6.
Chrono Trigger was the last JRPG I ever played and it bored me numb. I never finished it. I even tried watching LPs of it recently and it still bores me.
Part of the reason is the way in which events (cutscenes, etc.) are presented in CT. The character interactions and events in FF6 were emotionally strong and with lots of attention to little details. In CT I perceived none of that. Every event just felt the same. No details. No slowdown of the pacing. No "chemistry" between characters.
These flaws in CT weren't as obvious as I make it seem, but rather subtle, though. I'd say FF6 had a good director. CT didn't. That's how it felt to me.
@Kijinn Ehm... I really don't know how to say this, but, maybe you've heard of something called Dragon Ball Z... Ok, DBZ's creator is Akira Toriyama, who was the art director for this game, now, if you have a game directed by Akira Toriyama (again, DBZ's creator) And you still say it had no director.... I don't know what to tell you...
When I said "FF6 had a good director. CT didn't.", I meant that CT didn't have a *good* director. Not *none*.
And an *art director* has a different job than a *director*. The art director is responsible for the visual style of the game, whereas the director is responsible for how a story is presented, how characters talk and act, etc. And to my perception that is where CT was weak in comparison to FF6.
CT's presentation of emotional story-parts seemed rather bland and generic to me.
@Kijinn Also, This is one of my favorite RPG's ever! Right next to Super Mario RPG, which is awesome! Even though it doesn't have several endings like Chrono Trigger. This is what RPG's are supposed to be like! Don't get me wrong, I loved FFVI, but between FFVI and CT, I choose CT every single time! Although, you're right about the interactions of the characters in FF VI, but CT doesn't lack emotion, for God's sake, just an example, Frogg's backstory is heartbreaking, and Chrono freakin' dies!
@Kiwirnango eheheh I played it for the first time 3 years ago, after 5 years of "modern" games on different consoles. I still think this is the best game ever :)
Can you guys help me I have this guy called gexup spamming my channel and getting all his subscribers to do the same thing?Anyone who spams on his channel will get a subscription by me and be added to my friends list.
This Game is good, but if it had the battle system from terranigma, and the humor and the great, modern atmosphere from earthbound, it would be the greatest game ever made!
I'm not a big fan of RPGs but Chrono Trigger at least has ATB which is just about required for me to consider an RPG good on a gameplay level. I just wish you could crank the speed up a little bit higher.
@jumahn True, you think it would have gotten a perfect ten since I did not hear anything that was not liked it the review. I think the .5 would be it character design is ugly. That whole Dragon Ball Z / Dragons Quest look made me not interested in the game. I'm sure its a great game but I could not get past the Ugly Character Design.
I love this game. great review mate. brings back memories of playing it with my dad who's no longer with me. I remember my friend was over one night and I was fighting Lavos and using Luminare and was going on and on about how good the graphics were. lol silly kids :)
I've only played this game for like 2 hours on the DS, first time playing it ever, it's ok, can't say much more than that, though. I can't believe there is a character named fucking Frog, that cracked me up.
i still play this game lol i beat it like 50 times but i only remember 2 endings cause i do most of the ending side quests (without the internet) so i get the same ending a lot. my only problem i found (and i looked VERY VERY hard to find one)is that some of the enemies/bosses are pretty much the same design but completely different in the way you fight them and as a kid that really confused me cause i couldn't tell a big difference thinking they are the same but a diffrent color or so lol.
I played it first on my PS1 (Never had a NES or SNES). While I had my mind blown as a little kid with Final Fantasy 7 this game still snaked it's way into my heart. The music I heard during this review instantly triggered some of the best memories of my childhood. I wouldn't mind if this game had a remake though. (People have lashed out on me for this comment in the past). But I'd still love to see these characters in a nice coat of paint, and more fluent battle. A sequel however would suck imo
@PirahnaProductions Thanks for correcting me, I actually knew about the sequel.... long ago.... and forgot. I actually haven't played, is it any good?
Thanks for this review, Stan. Chrono Trigger is my personal favorite game of all time. It's the perfect example of what an RPG should be. It has an easy and fun magic system, an original and intriguing story, likable characters, incredible music, and it's just an all-around perfect game. I've played a lot of RPGs before and since Chrono Trigger, but I don't think I'll ever find an RPG that can match Chrono Trigger's greatness.
Its a great game, but not one of my favorites, but yea, its hard to dispute this one being good, it was one of the most advanced SNES games ever made.
I remember playing this game when I was eight years old. I was told I either had to let my uncle rape me up the ass, or play this game, so I played this game but my uncle raped me up the ass anyway.
I always connect this game in my head with the Captain Planet cartoon, because my uncle raped me in the ass while that was on quite a lot.
Chrono Trigger was the first game I ever played on a nintendo system. It was also the first game I ever beat(And the first game I ever beat multiple times).
I remember I played the game so much that my brothers threw it into a swimming pool just so I would stop playing it.....And it still worked when I put it I put it back in my SNES. They eventually broke it with a hammer a month later because I still wouldn't stop playing it. Good times.
i've played this game for like 10 minutes on my ds. it was just so.. confusing. i guess i have to give it another try when i'm done with all my other games.
Yes I must use the whole name. You love Chrono Trigger, You love Final Fantasy 7. So I have one question for you...
For the love of god why have you not reviewed Xenogears for the Playstation yet? That games battle system at the time alone makes it deserve a review from you.
I think after you do Chrono Cross you should consider Xenogears next.
i actually think the music is phenomenal , but it's either overrated or outdated as a game..i mean, it just isn't as timeless as final fantasy VI with the paper-thin story. the art is great, too, but i just didn't get all the praise when i played it on ps1 years ago.
I like the fact that you put realannoyingorange in there. It was funny until the 49389349349839488th time the Orange sticks his tongue out and acts like a kid.
About Chrono Trigger, not the best RPG ever made, but a very, very good game that should be played and enjoyed by all. It doesn't have the best story ever, but I think its level of character is what sets it above the rest in terms of all of the memorable characters you meet, from heroic Frog, to idiotic Dalton, and the silent Crono.
The first I played Chrono Trigger was with my cousin I have never forgotten all the events in the game and the events while playing it too many memories in this game.
I've always had a problem with this game. As a kid, I inherited all my game from my brother, and I could never match his skill. When i got around to this game. I open it up, and see his file, at the end boss, it wasn't until later, that I realized he'd made the best ending. I've played this game a lot, and I could never, again match him.
I've seen movies that deserve the top rating & this game is no exception. 9.5? give me a break! You lost some cool points with me on this one. There is a nice amount of games out there that are 10's!!!!!
I've played on the SNES through most of the story when I was younger, but then completed it on the DS version. I say the DS version is the best because it has the animated cutscenes of the PS1 version and an exclusive boss fight. The game gets a 10/10 for me. I actually played through it twice to get all the endings.
I remember renting this game in 1997. It started out slow but gained tremendous momentum as I played on. At the part where *blank* was *blanked* I was actually surprised when that happened. Going through the Undersea Palace and hearing the music, you knew something was about to go down.
I don't much care for this game. The battle system is a little slow, the storyline is kind of boring at times, it gets pretty hard later on, and for one reason or another, whenever I play through this game, I usually just end up getting bored and stopping. Nothing against people who do like this game, I just don't really care for it.
Stan to be honest I think your right on with the review the truth is I'd played many RPG's in my time and I do believe I even played Final Fantasy for the Nintendo back before the SNES and so on, but Chrono Trigger is really the game that won me over permanently to the RPG genre.
People say FF6 (3) or FF7 and while I do admire and like those games alot. Chrono Trigger is just what did it for me it's what made me take notice of Squaresoft(enix) made games.
The part where you go to the post-apocalyptic future always genuinely disturbed me and made me feel sad...it takes a very rare game to have that type of impact upon me
Absolutely love this game. The only game I like more than Chrono Trigger is Xenogears. By the way, Stan, I'd love to see a review of Xenogears in the future.
I played it on an emulator for like 30 minutes not too long ago, the graphics looked the something straight out of an rpg maker game.... So I couldn't take it very seriously... I missed out on this game when it was new.
this game was so good i have all three the snes the playstation and the ds versions but chrono cross was a disaster the game had a confusing story line and characters that felt useless it was not sequel at all people who say that cross is better than trigger need to get their eyes checked
Sadly the DS version was the first we got in europe, I played it a bit on emulator back then but I kinda hate doing that so never played it much.
I have the DS version now and it's a great game I wish I could have played on the SNES back in the days, but at that time Square didn't gave a rats ass about the european gamers (aka Final Fantasy 7 is the 1st FF we got).
@milincoln thats why strategies guides exsist. youd literally have to play this game many times all the way through just to find all the endings. 30 hours per game x like 10 play throughs = hardcore lol.
By far the best Square product that doesn't have the words 'Final' and 'Fantasy' in the title. Hell, there's only ONE Final Fantasy that I'd say overtakes this, but I'd be throwing out troll bait if I said which one.
@stanburdman you should review a game called CrazyBus for Sega Genesis. I think you'll agree it takes the cake as the worst sega genesis game ever made if not the worst video game ever made. review it for me if you want to.
Hands down the best Role Playing Game ever, but even that's tough to say when it's easily rivaled by Final Fantasy 6. In any case, those are the only two Role Playing Games I play, the rest are all overrated garbage, lol.
@BreastsInspector Honestly, I do NOT get all the love for Final Fantasy VI. The heroes were so-so, the main villain horrifically lame, the Esper system cumbersome, the plot boring.... Ack, gimme Final Fantasy III, V, VII, VIII and Tactics Advance anyday.
there are 2 rpgs better than this game...this game is a great game...but...it pales in comparision to super mario rpg and mystic quest (snes) and those pale in comparison to the perfect game banjo- tooie (its my favorite game) stan...please do a review on banjo-tooie! IM BEGGING YOU!! PLEASE!!!!!
I started to play it on emulator couple of years ago, had not heard about it before. Played maybe 15 minutes and then quit because it was boring. I guess it is boring for most people that are not into RPGs. Stan, when are you going to make another short animation?
brilliant review stan. this is also one of my favorite games of all time. i beat it many times in the past 5-10 years and it never gets old. also i loled at "Crono the silent protagonist, ginger... rastafarian, samurai." best line ever. oh and when you compared the year 2300 to lindsay lohans career was lulzy too. keep up the good work.
I'm going to hack this game and change all of the text to l337 5p33k.

The music I heard during this review instantly triggered some of the best memories of my childhood. I wouldn't mind if this game had a remake though. (People have lashed out on me for this comment in the past). But I'd still love to see these characters in a nice coat of paint, and more fluent battle. A sequel however would suck imo

@VikeifNarushi actually there is a sequel, Chrono Cross. some say it's better than trigger

@VikeifNarushi They made a sequel on ps1 called chrono cross

I liked the game but I honestly feel like it's a little overrated. And yes Akira Toriyama did the designs for the characters.

That explains why Chrono looks similar to SSj4 Goku

Its a great game, but not one of my favorites, but yea, its hard to dispute this one being good, it was one of the most advanced SNES games ever made.

I remember playing this game when I was eight years old. I was told I either had to let my uncle rape me up the ass, or play this game, so I played this game but my uncle raped me up the ass anyway.
I always connect this game in my head with the Captain Planet cartoon, because my uncle raped me in the ass while that was on quite a lot.

Can't say if i like it or not. Never played it.

Good times.

The only thing I didnt like about this game is that I am not good enough as a player to have uncovered all the endings.

Hands down the best Role Playing Game ever, but even that's tough to say when it's easily rivaled by Final Fantasy 6. In any case, those are the only two Role Playing Games I play, the rest are all overrated garbage, lol.
BreastsInspector 1 year ago
@BreastsInspector so final fantasy 7 is overrated garbage?
MXvsATV3DS 1 year ago
@BreastsInspector Honestly, I do NOT get all the love for Final Fantasy VI. The heroes were so-so, the main villain horrifically lame, the Esper system cumbersome, the plot boring.... Ack, gimme Final Fantasy III, V, VII, VIII and Tactics Advance anyday.

I started to play it on emulator couple of years ago, had not heard about it before. Played maybe 15 minutes and then quit because it was boring. I guess it is boring for most people that are not into RPGs. Stan, when are you going to make another short animation?
