This is pretty stupid stuff, only in L.A. would this guy from up north deliver the hippies directly to the Los Angeles Police Academy less than a mile away when they were so hated by the Police in the day.
I was at Elysian Park one Easter in 1968 when all hell broke loose and the LAPD had a field day knocking the crap out of every peace loving hippy in sight.
A Lotta Hippies worked building Homes, while bankers sat on their asses plottong how to get the fruits of the Labor of such as well as the lawmakers & other pencil pushing paper shuffling scamers, A lotta hippies had gardens for their food & dont think they're were some bussiness guys amongst them either spending money on the drugs the hippies worked so hard to obtain, LOL
Chet Helms (The Family Dog Avallon Balroom,Carousell Ballroom,Fillmore Auditorium 1965~ 1967 ,pre Bill Graham's Fillmore West ,San Francisco ,CA. ),introduces The Miller Blues Band.
love the original miller band! correct me if im wrong but it's steve on guitar, lonnie turner on bass (during this period he usually played a '57 p bassnot the jazz bass pictured here) and tim davies on drums. all the most underrated musicians of each of their instruments. also if you like this kind of music then Quicksilver Messenger Service are another awsome band of the Pshyc/blues
Nice to see the old footage of a then 23 year old Steve Miller; Hard to believe he's now 65. Yeah it 's a shame the hippies didn't fully change the consciousness of America back in the 60's, because the values the wealthy few have always had; materialism, greed and money worship have again led us down the road to ruin. IMHO that road to ruin also includes another great depression followed by a humanity decimating third world war. It's nice at least to get a glimpse of what could have been.
@mrbag60: Materialism? Greed? Money worship? Oh, how naive you are. Let me explain something to you, mrbag60. Money IS everything. How? Because money frees men from drudgery. Money frees women from exploitation. Money gives children a shot at a better education. It was the rich that built all the museums we have. It's the rich that pay for the scholarships and contribute the most to charity both privately and in terms of taxes. It's the rich that start business that employ people. And on and on.
@tomthefunky I agree with you, money is everything, but not to be worshiped. The riches are important to employ people and start sort of business too, of course. When some says no to materialism and money worship it's all about welfare not warfare.
LOL! I just saw your comment from 8 months ago and then I clicked on page 2 for the comments and saw you were answering MY question that I don't even remember asking! How is it I didn't know that was The Steve Miller Band? I know this stuff better than that. Heck I recognized them in the film "Revolution" and you can't even SEE them, why did I not hear it's "Mercury Blues" they're playing? GEEZ!
Great historical piece! Thank you so very much for posting this. There simply isn't enough first-hand documentation of this kind of thing. People (who were not there) need to understand what was really going on back then - it was a tremendously powerful social movement that helped to shape our modern culture. Too bad it didn't fully succeed, they had excellent ideals. If the hippies had taken control of the world back we would not have had an Iraq war or global warming today.

I drive by Elysian Park nearly everyday, and it's descended into a Mexican slum full of gang graffiti and homeless people.

@173rdbobby1967 It's "Mercury Blues." As far as I know the only album this is on is the soundtrack to the 1968 hippie documentary "Revolution."

Fucking hippies, somebody should have dropped the A-Bomb on their assess right there and then. Jesus, imagine the stench in that hole...

@FractalBolt Without the hippies you probably wouldn't do what you are doing today,
Steward Brand was a hippy, he invented the internet.
Steve Wozniak co-founded the first personal computer together with Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne, they were all hippies

As a side note: the reporter (seen close up at 1:50) is the one and only Alan Wicker (think i´ve spelt that right)
The Monty Python team did a great tribute sketch about him, I wonder if its up here?
