By definition it's unidentified, it's flying and it's an object, so its a ufo...ok, not the shape one might expect (eg saucer), but the thing hovered there, what else is one to think?
Bewteeen you and me, the black face idea probably does have far more pagan roots to it's origins; But contemporary, post St George-concept folklore for 'Mummers' plays, has it that the actors went to wealthy houses with their their faces blacked-up, performed their play in return for some bread and ale; The black faces were simply so that no one would be recognised next day, as while the play was going on, some thievery was also taking place.
