Watching these 'rock gods' makes me realize i grew up in the wrong era. Nothing sounds this pure anymore. Prince is friggin amazing. LOVE LOVE this tribute to Mr. Harrison. AMazing!
Prince taking it back to old rock n roll days when it was all about the showmanship/flair as much as it was about the music....that is what youcall old school even before elvis song rock!
Dhani. this POST was done in RESPECT to your father. I hope you understand my next words. In keeping with his views. Mr. George Harrison has reached another PLANE. I WOULD if possible call him back to look at what is happening now. Give us another message 0n how to LIVE. Please take my hand ALL GOOD PEOPLE.
went to see prince's old band from the purple rain era. they had a special reunion.25 years after band disbanded. They played songs from his first 5 albums. with no guarantee that he would show up the place was packed and people loved it even though he never showed. when you can pack a place with no promise you will show and have your old band perform music that was mostly all written, produced, and performed by you. and that being less than a third of your catalog...then you are a bad mofo!!
Damn I knew Prince could play but that was fucking awesome! I'm not a fan of his but I have to give it up for him, that was brilliant! I'm not sure, but, I think I could hear doves crying during his solo!
I love Dhani's look of unadulterated love at1:40, as he watches Prince just absolutely KILL it. A fan and clearly a dude who clearly loves great music.
Had never seen this before...Prince is a very highly underrated guitarist. I did know that much. Great sound here. Was it good? Look at Dhani's face at just after the 1:40 mark. That was his dad's smile too.
And he's not pop. far from it. He had one pop release and it was so successful he got tagged that then he never did another pop album again on purpose and gave up all those fans that didn't want to listen to good music
And he's not pop. far from it. He had one pop release and it was so successful he got tagged that then he never did another pop album again on purpose and gave up all those fans that didn't want to listen to good music
To those who say Prince is a good guitarist... the stuff he's playing is standard riffs- nothing special, or original or challenging. But I guess that's true- he is a good guitar player, but far short of even being 'REALLY GOOD". It's not a bad thing- he's a pop star. but if he had to earn his living with his axe, he's in trouble.
@gonzalobocchi i dont agree with the part about really good however, the part about playing with your soul is so important...Rock comes from blues/soul /gospel and country and you dont get any more soul then that..besides when the moment moves you it's like the holy ghost and prefection goes out the window
@yankeeG I guess you've never really listened to Prince... All the standard radio Crap... If Prince had to earn his living with his axe, he'd be as rich as he right now. Check out the man's archive buddy... he's far more than a pop star
@AlphaDean totally agree, he's a real musican and songwriter. Never knew why MJ was called "King of Pop" while Price wrote, produced and performed his music on his own, without any playback for the fancy dances....
@yankeeG Yeah they are standard but its about the placement of the riffs and showmanship. From the clothes all the way down to the falling in the audience to throwing the guitar. The key is to make the audience think you’re good and create excitement. The average onlooker will say he’s great. Only real guitarist will say what you’re saying. Guitarist that would stand in the middle of the stage and play like steve via and put everyone to sleep.
@yankeeG ... typical wanna be comment . keep practicing dude you might be inducted into the musical hall of fame like Prince was on that night .. NOT! ... not bad for a "GOOD" guitar player lol
I love Prince, and i love the solo, but I think he should have pulled back a bit, this is of course a beatles song. You just don't go all Steve Vai all over it.
Hmmmm, I love love love Prince's performance and Tom Petty... but while Dhani looks like George, I am not sure he has the talent. Maybe its just me... I have perfect pitch and so the off key makes my ears hurt alot. Sorry, I know he is probably a beloved musician by some.
This is all funny because if you read the articles from the day after this Rock Hall induction ceremony they say that Dhani Harrison asked Prince to play a solo because Prince was content to just play rhythm. And even during the solo Prince looks over at Dhani a couple times like 'do you want me to keep going'. Prince is far from humble, but this was preplanned with the other stars... Plus this wasn't just a celebration of George Harrison. This was also the night Prince got inducted into the HoF
They invited Prince to play. I'm sure they discussed the performance and rehearsed it. It's silly to think Prince "wanked" all over it or that what he delivered wasn't what was expected. They wanted to jazz it up a bit, and Prince does that. I don't like it musically (the playing is fine, just the wrong song for it), but it's what they wanted and intended.
@tarstarkas1 OK, so this is how the rehearsal meeting went:
Tom Petty: "Yo Prince, we're gonna jazz this one up a bit, how 'bout you take the solo. Stand out front, because you're the star. Don't forget to pull your best cum face too. Oh, and throw in a few cliche rock star shapes, the windmill is always a winner."
Dhani Harrison: "Also Mr Prince, if its OK with you, at the end of the song, please throw your guitar in the air and stut off stage. Its what Dad would have wanted."
Petty: "Prince, please do not act like your normal self and just play something really pretty and subdued. Be humble and melodic, stand in the back, and essentially take no credit for being here."
Dhani: "Yes, and honor a man who was better than you, admit it through your actions, and don't try to act like a trashy star although you always have."
I have to admit Prince can play, but theres a time and a place. The dude wanked all over a Beatles classic with Georges son looking on. This version of the song emphasises George Harrisons understated brilliance.
@Ivolution7 C'mon, Dhani seemed to have enjoyed it too. The kid was beaming all over watching the purple dwarf doing his thing - which was, I do agree, utter wank.
That has to feel bad, you buy front row seats and youre listening to the best guitar solo ever, but once it ends you get hit in the face with a 10 pound guitar
