Neutral Milk Hotel is an absolute joke. I haven't heard enough of The Decemberists to make an unbiased judgement. I personally love Mumford & Sons but I think Conor is still the superior songwriter as far as lyrics go. Mumford has a way of getting in your head and staying there. Their songs are simple yet effective, like Conor's.

However let's not bring Sufjan Stevens to the ring...

How anybody could compare Conor Oberst to The Decemberists, Mumford and Sons, and especially Dallas fucking Green is beyond me. Not even in the same ballpark. In my opinion, the only person you can compare to Oberst is Elliott Smith...and maybe David Dondero, but I haven't listened to enough Dondero to really say. Conor is a musical genius with songs that can actually make a MAN cry. The dude has changed my life.

@bodymeetsoul Artists who do things 'for the love of art' aren't typically involved with rankings or ratings, etc. I firmly believe that Conor is making music because it's his passion, what he loves to do, and mainly because it's his medium to contact the human race and his biggest way of impacting. Watch some of his interviews and it's pretty clear that Conor isn't really "competing" with anyone in particular, just with himself to maintain a spot in the industry w/o sacrificing his own self.
