This precedes Birdland...which literally changed my life. I can't give my thanks to this album more. This was just a bunch of incredibly talented individuals making a fantastic record. All helmed by a poet that understood the musical and cultural climate at the time. I'll never stop loving this untouchable record.
@Slapbass13 you're simply looking at the wrong modern artist. Flourence and the Machine, Imogen Heap, Alanis Morissette, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos- Plenty to draw from just go beyond the radio.
@yancybutler I've seen Flourence and the Machine live. Nothing special. Alanis Morisette is dreary and overrated. Tori Amos though is decent, as is Imogen Heap.
@Slapbass13 haha I dunno Alanis rocks. She has such a catalogue it's so easy to peg her as dreary or angry but you simply get to the next track and it's joy-filled and uplifting. How About Ani Difranco or Pj Harvey?
@yancybutler the women you mention cut their teeth on Patti Smith. You had to be there at the time to be truly blown away. There was the same amount of shit pop music then as there is now. Why the hell do you think punk appealed to so many kids? Me being one.
@MrMonsterstiffy I see the influence with Difranco, Morissette and especially Harvey (Tori Amos and Imogen Heap where more clearly influenced by Kate Bush)- But yes of course no arguement there that they cut their teeth on her (she began her carrerr while most where being born or born later.) And while there was still shit pop in 76 it held alot more merit than the shit pop of the 2000's. I'm still truly blown away by Smith regardless If I was unable to be aroud at that time.
It is one of lifes ironies that one of the best songs on one of the top 100 albums of all time gets 17,00 hits in 2 years while some talentless phonies who cant sing without autotune churn out endless rubbish and get hits by the hundreds of millions..........go figure?!?!?
@thedeadbeatdsg I heard average IQ is 100... plus advertising by the criminal media who don't want people to listen to anything intelligent. To some people music is probably a noise to be veggie to anyway.
Patti at CBGB,s , Richard Hell and the Void Doids, Ramones, and so many others, savage and twisted times I will cherish, the stories that place could tell. Grand Opening of the CBGB theater next door with Patti, riot police shut it down, cut the band's power. Patti comes out on stage and asays..."I'd really like to see this place work, we can walk out easy...or we can make it on the front page tomorrow...whatever you you guys want to do I won't pussy out!" Threw the mike down and sat down. Wow.

Brilliant.
Modern female singers don't show much emotion these days. Its all about sex appeal rather than emotive vocals (which is mostly done by men).
Seriously, fuck the modern music industry.

@Slapbass13 You need to look up more indie music.....The pop scene sucks right now but the indepent is off the chain.

@VentraleStar I know the indie scene is great right now. Indie is pretty much all I listen to.
I sort of meant that whole corporate ideas of how female singers should sing. Just watch the X Factor on a saturday night, thats what mean.

@societyforrealmusic IQ testing works on a curve. 100 is always the average, that's how the test works.
