Saw this on the BIG SCREEN at art-house theatre i go to.. great one liners, a giant slap-stick, laced with dancing and music from a bygone era. a true wild ride the resonates but sadly no one hears the fantastic rumblings
HELLAZAPOPPIN 1941 a classic a great broadway show 1938-41 OLSON&JOHNSON owned the town the Universal made atrempt to dulpicate the success just so so but with Hugh Herbert what a funny film, i love it. We need more teams like Ole 7 Chic. tomkes film tv historian
O&J were some of vaudeville's best back in the day. The material never translated well to tv & film. Anyone posting or commenting on Youtube was not alive to see them, live and in their prime. Vaudeville is a lost comedy form, that doesnt work by todays standards.
This film was based on the stage play HELLZAPOPPIN stage review. From all notices it was an incredibly funny show. Unfortunately in the translation to film Olson & Johnson ran into considerable interference from the motion picture studio. So don't base your opinion of Olson & Johnson on the film version of their stage show.
I bought the DVD because of the dance sequence from youtube... WOW... is this movie jam-packed with everything--just when it you thought it had it all they stuck a conga in too!! I think it's one of my all time favorite movies! Love it--I'm glad it's in my collection! Love the tree-gag!!
OMG! That's the screwiest screwball comedy I've ever seen! As a projectionist I appreciate the theater humor a lot. No, there aren't any rewind buttons on projectors! Hahahah!
I can't wait to see this whole movie. I hope it never settles down and gets a real plot.
Great!!!!

Dear Triso,
Since when were John Olson and Hal Johnson ever really funny?! Especially in this crappy screen version of their stage musical "Hellzapopin!"?

actually for the era this was riotous; similar to the Zucker Bros. works.

Shemp Howard was also funny working on his
own..too bad he was not able to to be seen at his
best in this crap from John Olsen and Hal Johnson.
143AC 2 years ago
Zebonaut,
You do recognize Shemp then in the opening right!!!
For a diehard Stooges fan one line from Shemp makes the whole flick. (well at least it does for me)

Dear Zebonaut,
Among today comedy performers..I consider
Billy Crsytal,Whoope Goldberg,Rowan Atkinson,
John Candy and Tracy Ullman funny. From The past I consider L&H,A&C,The Three
Stooges,The East Side Kids,The Bowery Boys
Funny..Not Olsen and Johnson.
