Scottish student here. Vodka is a shit spirit to drink straight, go for some good whiskey or rum. It's expensive, but you can actually experience it rather than drink pisswater.

It's great for mixing though, it's relatively tasteless and the cheap stuff isn't much different at all from the "better" stuff.
