My absolute favorite Smokey & The Miracles song. Though a little obscure this song is one of Smokey's most brilliant creations. When his voice cracks at 2:07 is absolutely genius. Today's singers know who their heroes are. Levi Stubbs and The 4 Tops, another genius group.

It's a shame the so many people today tend to give SMOKEY SOLE CREDIT for songs recorded by THE MIRACLES as a GROUP. Like he was in the studio by himself. Most of the comments placed on this page are the proof .Don't be taken in by the attempts of certain individuals to RE-WRITE HISTORY,and give SOLE credit to Smokey for THE MIRACLES COLLECTIVE ACCOMPLISHMENTS. THE MIRACLES were a GROUP..and ALL of them are important...NOT JUST HIM. BOBBY, RONNIE,PETE,CLAUDETTE, and MARV were important too.
@williamg255HI, I CAN'T AGREE WITH YOU. NOT ONLY WAS "SMOKEY" THEIR FRONTMAN",HE "IS"ONE OF THE MOST P-R-O-L-I-F-I-C SONGWRITTERS IN HISTORY,PLEASE ,PLEASE TELL ME HOW MANY SONGS WERE WRITTEN BY THE INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS OF THE "MIRACLES............"COLLECTIVELY"?AS YOU KNOW, STEPPING "OUT" WAS A COMMON PRACTICE WITH GROUPS THEN,I.E.,DIANA ROSS,MARTHA REEVES,DAVID RUFFIN,PATTI LA BELLE,ETC,ETC!.NO OFFENSE TO YOU,BUT I THINK YOU GET MY POINT. @doowopman49 WITH MIRACLE MARV TARPLIN: I LIKE IT LIKE THAT, THE TRACKS OF MY TEARS, MY GIRL HAS GONE, THE LOVE I SAW IN YOU WAS JUST A MIRAGE, DOGGONE RIGHT, COME ON DO THE JERK, and POINT IT OUT by THE MIRACLES. AIN'T THAT PECULIAR,ONE MORE HEARTACHE, I'LL BE DOGGONE, and TAKE THIS HEART OF MINE by MARVIN GAYE.CRUSIN' by SMOKEY ROBINSON.
@doowopman49 ...And, in addition, ALL of THE MIRACLES recorded the tunes....NOT JUST SMOKEY. HE was NOT in the studio recording them all by himself . The name on the label was the reality of the content : "THE MIRACLES" or later, "SMOKEY ROBINSON & THE MIRACLES. The labels didn't just say "SMOKEY ROBINSON". So, WHY DO PEOPLE GIVE SOLE CREDIT FOR MIRACLES SONGS simply to SMOKEY ? ALL of them were in the studio..so ALL of them deserve credit... NOT JUST SMOKEY .
@williamg2552 HI, THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY.YOU'LL GET NO ARGUMENT FROM ME ON THE POINTS YOU RAISE HERE. I ATTRIBUTE THE "SPOTLIGHTING" OR "HEADLINING" TO 1) BUSINESS MANUVERING AND 2) THE PUBLICS ACCEPTANCE AND DESIRE TO KNOW WHO THE "LEADERS" ARE. HOWEVER, IN REGARDS TO WRITTING SONGS,SURE THERE WERE OTHERS THAT CONTRIBUTED ,BUT PLEASE ACCEPT THAT THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS WERE A MERE DROP IN A BUCKET{RELATIVELY SPEAKING}, AS "SMOKEY HAS WRITTEN SOMEWHERE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF 2,000 TITLES!!! TOM D.
@doowopman49 On The Miracles' 2006 Motown DVD, 3 of The Miracles were interviewed, Pete, Smokey, and Bobby. They said that the only reason that Berry Gordy changed the group's name from THE MIRACLES to SMOKEY ROBINSON & THE MIRACLES was it was a marketing ploy for the group to make more money for live performances. The ploy worked, and the group's earnings increased. However, Smokey made it clear that ALL of the members of THE MIRACLES made an EQUAL SHARE for royalties and live shows.
@doowopman49 Also, keep in mind, that we're talking about 2 different things: WRITING VS. SINGING. The MIRACLES were one of the greatest singing groups of ALL TIME. They are also THE MOST COVERED of ALL MOTOWN'S GROUPS... with almost 60 of their songs covered by other artists. No other Motown group even comes close. THE MIRACLES songs were a product of a TEAM.... NOT ONE INDIVIDUAL. The collective talents of THE TEAM was what made the MIRACLES successful...and so they ALL deserve credit.
@doowopman49 At least the other Miracles co- wrote their tunes . The OTHER major Motown groups in the '60's DIDN'T WRITE ANYTHING. The Temptations didn't. The Supremes didn't . The Four Tops and the Jackson Five didn't . Only THE MIRACLES DID. Just another reason why the ENTIRE GROUP should be credited. THE MIRACLES' success paved the way for EVERY MOTOWN ACT that followed them. They tore down the doors. The others just walked on through.
@doowopman49 Even Smokey knows how important the contributions of his fellow Miracles were . That's why he protested his "solo " induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame....and he said on July 15th 2011, at the Rock Hall, that he has been actively been campaigning to get ALL of The Miracles inducted ASAP.
@williamg2552 hi, this fact i was honestly unaware of,thank you for that information! i agree he should have petitioned for the induction of "all the members". now if he were honored as a "song writter, well that honor would truly belong to him. your friend, tom d.
WHAT POWER!! Harp and violins, angelic voices, and that ain't no drum machine either. You go, Smokey. This is the SHIT!! It's the kind of song that raised excitement, gave goosebumps and made you look for that special someone to grab and run on to the dance floor with. All about love. I remember the double album set this song was on. Remember when you couldn't find the disk for the 45 and the necessary alignment of the groove lines? Now that's comedy. Young folk don't have a clue...
Makes me remember going to the record store which was right in the neighborhood, and buying the lastest '45's every Friday, and bringing to the "house party" that usually cost 10 cents to get in. Gotta laugh at that memory...
LOVE IT, LOVE IT! Can remember sitting up and staring at the album cover while this song played. Like so many, was in love with Smokey! Great times, Great music! Thx for posting all the great songs.
Is it NOT so difficult to see that so-called "R-A-P" (Repulsive - And - Pathetic) can't even come close to what a TRUE POET expresses, without being disrespectful or offensive to anyone. SMOKEY is truly a genuine writer of messages put to speech, that is set to song and music. The so-called 'Flip-Flop' generation have lost ALL connection with the TRUE ARTISTRY and CREATIVITY that the innovaters of R&B left for them to expand and grow upon. Its a sad state affairs when they don't know this.
Smokey Robinson is a poet! He put words together like no one else in pop history. The words always were romantic but made sense. The melodies were smooth and breezy. No matter what time of the year, Smokey's songs always remind me of those sweet summers of the early sixties.
I may have written this a long time ago but I am going to do it again. It was in I believe 1962 when we went to visit my grandparents in NY during that year. My youngest aunt who was 12 at that time pulled us into her bedroom and said she wanted us to hear t his great song. Well she put on the 45 of this song and me being all of 7 at the time fell in love with this song. My aunt doesn't remember that moment but it stood out as a great memory which I never forgot.
MORE SONGS in the GRAMMY HALL of FAME than ANY OTHER MOTOWN GROUP !!! SMOKEY ROBINSON, BOBBY RODGERS, CLAUDETTE ROBINSON,RONNIE WHITE, PETE MOORE, and MARV TARPLIN...The Mighty MIRACLES !!!
this takes me back to a much simpler time ..more gentle..the early 60s.i a child crawling around the floor playing with toy cars..and little green army men(soldiers) with tiny tanks and jeeps..the year 1960-62..so that puts me at or 4yrs old 5yrs..but I remember this song as clearly as if it were yesterday..i was Really a kid then..wish i could go back...
Everybody always gives credit only to Smokey, and NEVER credits the other Miracles ....so I'll do it. Thanks to Bobby Rogers, Pete Moore, Claudette Rogers Robinson, Marv Tarplin , the memory of the late Ronnie White, and Smokey...for 50 years of Motown magic, music, and memories from Motown's first group, THE MIRACLES.
it's a good thing good music doesn't have a sell by date. was only in middle song when this came out so the nuances of the lyrics were lost on me from a relationship point of view. what did happen as a result of hearing smokey-written songs was that lyrics and lyricism began to really mean something to me and my peers. still a beautiful song, beautifully sung.
what ever happened to those magazines we used to buy that had all the song lyrics?
Every brother (BlackWhite/Latino/Asian/Nat.Amer) can all learn from the Grandmaster of Smooth - Dr. Robinson. His songs reflect the warmth and sensitivity of the Romantic Man that our women should see and want to appreciate in us.
I'm only 26, and I LOVE this song. I feel in love with smokey robinson music when i was a teenager, and listened to my moms set of Cd's...I hate that the song is soo short.
I remember as a kid of 7 in 1962 my family went to visit my grandparents in NY and no soon as we got in the door my youngest aunt who was all of 12 told me and my oldest sister (there were 6 of us at the time) to come and hear this great song she had. She was so excited to play this song for us on her little record player. To this day she doesn't remember that time but I do. Great song.
John Lennon in particular loved Smokey and it's so easy to see .. his first tour of the States I think was with the great Mary Wells (most of her songs were written by Smokey) and the Tempts had so many great songs from Smokey. Can someone tell how often Smokey just wrote the lyrics and his guitarist Sam Moore? wrote the music? I can never find this out and it's important ..I'd like to see every get the proper credit.
@11xzxzxz There is NO ONE in THE MIRACLES named SAM MOORE. SAM MOORE is one half of the duo SAM AND DAVE... and THEY NEVER EVEN RECORDED FOR MOTOWN. The guitarist/songwriter in THE MIRACLES is MARV TARPLIN...and he IS considered a member of THE MIRACLES. The only " MOORE" in the MIRACLES is bass singer / songwriter PETE MOORE. For more information, please go to WIKIPEDIA and look up "THE MIRACLES" .
@williamg2552 Sure I know now. I meant to say Pete Moore who I have since found wrote the music for a few Miracle songs and also for others such as Marvin Gaye (as I'll be long gone). But as far as I can tell Smokey did music and melody most of the time so Smokey deserves to be held is highest esteem. This is my favorite Smokey song hands down.
And John said he was trying to sound like Smokey on several records. This is my fav song by the Miracles. I'm a demented romantic.. love the orchestration
@kennardmatthews92 - The truest words spoken on YouTube, my friend. Rap has WAAAAYYYYY too much attitude and postering. Vulnerability is an unknown commodity in the rap world. Rap is regression of human progress for the most part.
Also , on ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE'S LIST of "THE IMMORTALS;THE 100 GREATEST ARTISTS OF ALL TIME...the MIRACLES are ranked as #32...which puts them ABOVE ALL OTHER MOTOWN GROUPS. ALL OF THEM...INCLUDING THE TEMPS. (IF dancing was such an important thing, The Temps would have ranked higher). The Miracles deserve their due...but Temps fans are always reluctant to give it to them. Miracles fans never trash the Temps.
The MIRACLES have more GRAMMY HALL OF FAME inducted songs than ANY other MOTOWN group. More than The SUPREMES, TEMPTS, TOPS, J-5, ...ALL OF THEM.
Also, over 50 of their songs have been covered by literally SCORES of other artists...in EVERY MAJOR MUSICAL GENRE. POP, ROCK, COUNTRY,REGGAE, JAZZ, MOR/EASY LISTENING, RAP/HIP-HOP, & ACAPELLA , as well as SOUL/R&B. No other Motown group even comes CLOSE. And , they were ALL writers...not just Smokey.
If it wasn't for the MIRACLES, there would have been NO MOTOWN. Then where would all of the label's other artists have been. Berry Gordy himself said it. Who would know better than him ?
Yes, the Temps were more exciting stage performers than The Miracles. But, on the other hand , they didn't write any hits. You can sing and dance all day, but , without great material, where would you be ? Dance steps don't put royalties into your pocket. Songwriting does. Both groups are great in their own way.
@williamg2552 Most people don't realize that so many of these great "Smokey" songs are co-written by his fellow Miracles. How can The Miracles not be in the HOF?!
Hey lets not get crazy The Temptin Tempts where much better than the Miracles. More talented per person, danced better etc...... Smokey is in a case by himself when it comes to writing and producing though
George Harrison cited this song as being one of his favorites. The Beatles loved Smokey. When George wrote "Something," he imagined it as a Smokey Robinson song. Maybe, the title of this song somehow inspired George. At the height of Beatlemania, the Beatles, of course, had an album that was released by Capitol in the states called, "Something New."
Thank you for the reply. No, I didn't mean Paul. George wrote "Something" (on the Abbey Road album). This is well known. Look it up. Paul wrote many Beatle classics: Yesterday, Michelle, Eleanor Rigby, Lady Madonna, and Hey Jude among many others. However, I am 100% certain. "Something" was written and sung by George. This is a fact.
I'll definitely look it up. I remember Paul singing a song called "Something" and I assumed that this was it. Unless Paul sang one of George's songs as well as those he wrote with John Lennon or I misremembered the song as being sung by Paul and it was really George, it's probably a Beatles song that I'm unfamiliar. Thank you for the reply.
@Doleafol I can't think of too many things I'd rather not have to do than to listen to the Beatles singing a Motown song (or, come to think of it, ANY song)! They are pop singers, and don't have a single strand of soul DNA in any of their bodies. They wrote some great songs, which are way better when someone else, like The Temptations version of "Let It Be,"sings them. BAH on the Beatles.
@calwaite - I didn't even have to see the signature to know who wrote this! Hey Cal! Going to see Smokey at Caesar's in Atlanitc City in June! This up-coming proformance was just announced yesterday, tix go on sale today!
My favorite Beatles song is "Come Together". Check out Michael Jackson's version on You Tube...kind of funky. I give the Beatles credit for knowledging their inspirations in the music world, mostly talented blk artists.
I was introduced to this song by the book Rock And Roll: The 100 Best Singles by Paul Williams. I've been grateful ever since. Williams pointed out just one of the things that make this record absolute genius:
Notice if you will that, every time Smokey sings the line "If that don't do, then I'll try something new," he sings it differently---literally trying something new. Count 'em---five equally lovely ways to bend that already elegant bit of melody. It blows my mind.
@alexalot23 So True! And even though we all know space is an empty dangerous void, Smokey makes me want to go to Venus and Mars and play on The Milkyway with Smokey singing all the way on the trip). Yes romantic is the word. I grew up listening to this great poet! Plus, he was so cute! Love you Smoke!
Dapps to tbear4pa, and just to add another remark, Smokey was writng HITS for the rest of the Motown family, in which most of them became top 10 hits. Vision and genius he had before Stevie started writing for the same Family. Holland, Dozier, & Holland made contibutions that made it easier for Hitsville to continue. What times that must have been in spite of the tradgedys that beset the house that Berry built.. So much music we ahve the pleasure to hold on to, and pass on too.
My brther, kookhead55, you're absolutely on time. Many of the greatest Motown songs were before they ever were played on 'pop music' stations.Smokey was writing them, well before the Holland-Dozier-Holland split.
Smokey and I are the sme age, and I still remember cuddling up to a beautiful young lady and following the road 'map' tha t Smokey laid down so beautifully. I know Smokey is in the Hall of Fame, but what about the Miracles? Put them in, as a group--they should be there!
The beauty of the Motown Sound is not only how long it has endured, but the passsing along to our children. I know that it is very heartwarming to hear teenagers singing, My Girl, Heatwave, etc. Also the movie soundtracks that continue to reconize the how the sounds fits into movies of this age also. Let's keep reminding ourselves of what was given to the world by the Genius of the Sound of Hitsville, U.S.A.
The Miracles were the group that were of the longest duration when it came to producing different experimental styles of R&B(with either doowop or Cha-Cha beats), longer than most other groups for Motown because they had done that between 1958-1962(though they had one hit in that early period which was "Shop Around") whereas most other ones did it only in 1959-1960. The Miracles finally had begun to do the standard style for Motown in early 1963 with their next hit "You Really Got a Hold on Me".
I'll build u a castle so tall that it'll touch the moon... I love this song, my kids will know this song by heart, can u dig it? ... if that don't do, then I'll try something new.. YEAH!!
SMOKEY ROBINSON, BOBBY ROGERS, PETE MOORE, CLAUDETTE ROBINSON, RONNIE WHITE, and MARV TARPLIN....Motown's FIRST... Motown's BEST.....THE MIRACLES RULE !!!
This is my new theme song. Before this, it was Like it Like That (and it boggles my mind that no one has this up on YouTube). Smokey was such a gifted person. It's no wonder why Smokey was the only singer/song writer/producer in Motown when Gordy Berry told everyone else that they had to stick to one thing.
You do not like groups that don't write their own songs? Groups like the Temps can "work it ". The singer / songwriter relationship has to benefit both parties sometime, I'm sure that artists' feel this way. Hit songwriting must be a gift, but great songwriters need the "voices" as well (and vice versa). If it were easy everyone would do it, but I understand your point, the Miracles have been overlooked far too long!
**THE MIRACLES** One of the GREATEST, MOST INFLUENTIAL groups of ALL TIME. The group that launched the ENTIRE MOTOWN PHENOMONON !!The ONLY MOTOWN GROUP during the sixties that WROTE and PRODUCED THEIR OWN MATERIAL. 4 time GRAMMY HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES. Inducted into the VOCAL GROUP HALL OF FAME, THE DOO-WOP HALL OF FAME, and THE HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME....YET ,DESPITE ALL OF THIS, BLACKLISTED FROM THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME for the last 22 YEARS...FOR NO GOOD REASON !!!
Don't forget...THE MIRACLES are a GROUP . They have ALWAYS sang, wrote, performed and recorded as a group....so, they ALL deserve credit.... NOT JUST ONE MEMBER.
Hi Angel, Fancy meeting you AGAIN! LOL...I was going to send you this song BUT, You have already been here...& guess what...this Is one of my MOST favorite tunes that smokey sings!
"Way Over There", "What's So Good About Goodbye" and "I'll try something new" are great songs written by one of the greatest songwriters ever. Thanks for posting.
The MIRACLES "i'LL TRY SOMETHING NEW" album (and 4 other classic Miracles albums) are available on CD for the FIRST TIME on a brand -new 50th anniversary 2 CD set: THE MIRACLES: DEPEND ON ME- available NOW on the "MOTOWN SELECT " website.
I ALSO would take THE MIRACLES over the Temps any day. i like the Temps, but I have always had a greater respect for artists who write their own material, as opposed to those who "just sing" . The MIRACLES did. The Temps DIDN'T.most of THEIR early hits, flip sides, and album cuts were written by THE MIRACLES.
@williamg2552 For my money you nailed it! Comparing the Temptations and The Miracles is like comparing a steak dinner with a lobster dinner--they are both exceptional, its just about your personal taste. One thing I will say, however, it is significantly different when you write, orchestrate, and sing a song, as opposed to simply taking someone elses pre-produced and ready to record song, and singing it. On that basis, what Smokey and The Miracles have done, and continue to do is great.
@williamg2552 so what. the miracles didnt have the great harmony of the temptations nor their ability to PERFORM live on stage. Like Elvis who never wrote a note But had the audience in the palms of his hands..Michael and the Jackson Five at first didnt write their material but surely OUT sang and performed others who Wrote theirs including Smokeys own Whos Lovin you although Michael didnt write and covered it he did it Better than the Smokey who wrote it and performed it. .
@blkshepherd Usually, it's not the Miracles' fans who bash The Temptations. It's almost ALWAYS the other way around. Temptations fans almost ALWAYS criticize ANYONE who doesn't say that The Temptations are their favorite group. You just proved my point. It's been going on for the last 50 years. And it's STILL going today
It's a great big world out there..and everyone is not going to have the same opinion who their favorite group is. mine is THE MIRACLES.
@NubianJQueen I'LL TAKE THE MIRACLES ANY DAY....AND TWICE ON SUNDAY !!!
PEOPLE ARE GETTING MAD....AND REALLY ANNOYED, THAT THE MIRACLES HAVEN'T BEEN INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK and ROLL HALL of FAME...IF THEY'RE GOOD ENOUGH TO GET A STAR ON THE HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME ..AND GOOD ENOUGH TO HAVE 4 SONGS IN THE GRAMMY HALL OF FAME (more than any other Motown group) ..AND GOOD ENOUGH TO HAVE 3 OF THEIR SONGS IN ROLLING STONES 500 GREATEST SONGS OF ALL TIME..THEN WHY NO RRHOF INDUCTION ??
@NubianJQueen why compare? two different groups with two diferent styles..Wonder why folks always pit Motown groups against the other..I dont hear anyone pitting the Stones against the Beatles.. or Beach Boys against the Four Seasons and they surely were All out the same time. hmmm..makes you wonder about some of you people

However, Smokey made it clear that ALL of the members of THE MIRACLES made an EQUAL SHARE for royalties and live shows.
williamg2552 6 months ago
@doowopman49 Also, keep in mind, that we're talking about 2 different things: WRITING VS. SINGING. The MIRACLES were one of the greatest singing groups of ALL TIME. They are also THE MOST COVERED of ALL MOTOWN'S GROUPS... with almost 60 of their songs covered by other artists. No other Motown group even comes close. THE MIRACLES songs were a product of a TEAM.... NOT ONE INDIVIDUAL. The collective talents of THE TEAM was what made the MIRACLES successful...and so they ALL deserve credit.
williamg2552 6 months ago
@doowopman49 At least the other Miracles co- wrote their tunes . The OTHER major Motown groups in the '60's DIDN'T WRITE ANYTHING. The Temptations didn't. The Supremes didn't . The Four Tops and the Jackson Five didn't . Only THE MIRACLES DID. Just another reason why the ENTIRE GROUP should be credited. THE MIRACLES' success paved the way for EVERY MOTOWN ACT that followed them. They tore down the doors. The others just walked on through.
williamg2552 6 months ago
@doowopman49 Even Smokey knows how important the contributions of his fellow Miracles were . That's why he protested his "solo " induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame....and he said on July 15th 2011, at the Rock Hall, that he has been actively been campaigning to get ALL of The Miracles inducted ASAP.
williamg2552 6 months ago

LyricLove101 6 months ago
Makes me remember going to the record store which was right in the neighborhood, and buying the lastest '45's every Friday, and bringing to the "house party" that usually cost 10 cents to get in. Gotta laugh at that memory...

My aunt doesn't remember that moment but it stood out as a great memory which I never forgot.

this takes me back to a much simpler time ..more gentle..the early 60s.i a child crawling around the floor playing with toy cars..and little green army men(soldiers) with tiny tanks and jeeps..the year 1960-62..so that puts me at or 4yrs old 5yrs..but I remember this song as clearly as if it were yesterday..i was Really a kid then..wish i could go back...

it's a good thing good music doesn't have a sell by date. was only in middle song when this came out so the nuances of the lyrics were lost on me from a relationship point of view. what did happen as a result of hearing smokey-written songs was that lyrics and lyricism began to really mean something to me and my peers. still a beautiful song, beautifully sung.
what ever happened to those magazines we used to buy that had all the song lyrics?

John Lennon in particular loved Smokey and it's so easy to see .. his first tour of the States I think was with the great Mary Wells (most of her songs were written by Smokey) and the Tempts had so many great songs from Smokey. Can someone tell how often Smokey just wrote the lyrics and his guitarist Sam Moore? wrote the music? I can never find this out and it's important ..I'd like to see every get the proper credit.
11xzxzxz 1 year ago
@11xzxzxz There is NO ONE in THE MIRACLES named SAM MOORE. SAM MOORE is one half of the duo SAM AND DAVE... and THEY NEVER EVEN RECORDED FOR MOTOWN. The guitarist/songwriter in THE MIRACLES is MARV TARPLIN...and he IS considered a member of THE MIRACLES. The only " MOORE" in the MIRACLES is bass singer / songwriter PETE MOORE. For more information, please go to WIKIPEDIA and look up "THE MIRACLES" .
williamg2552 1 year ago
@williamg2552 Sure I know now. I meant to say Pete Moore who I have since found wrote the music for a few Miracle songs and also for others such as Marvin Gaye (as I'll be long gone). But as far as I can tell Smokey did music and melody most of the time so Smokey deserves to be held is highest esteem. This is my favorite Smokey song hands down.

And , they were ALL writers...not just Smokey.
williamg2552 1 year ago
If it wasn't for the MIRACLES, there would have been NO MOTOWN. Then where would all of the label's other artists have been. Berry Gordy himself said it. Who would know better than him ?
Yes, the Temps were more exciting stage performers than The Miracles. But, on the other hand , they didn't write any hits. You can sing and dance all day, but , without great material, where would you be ? Dance steps don't put royalties into your pocket. Songwriting does. Both groups are great in their own way.

Doleafol 2 years ago 9
I think you mean Paul, not George(Paul wrote and sang "Something"), but otherwise I concur.
Elric33239 1 year ago
@Elric33239
Doleafol 1 year ago
I'll definitely look it up. I remember Paul singing a song called "Something" and I assumed that this was it. Unless Paul sang one of George's songs as well as those he wrote with John Lennon or I misremembered the song as being sung by Paul and it was really George, it's probably a Beatles song that I'm unfamiliar. Thank you for the reply.
Elric33239 1 year ago

PerryCoxPF93 1 year ago 2
@Doleafol I can't think of too many things I'd rather not have to do than to listen to the Beatles singing a Motown song (or, come to think of it, ANY song)! They are pop singers, and don't have a single strand of soul DNA in any of their bodies. They wrote some great songs, which are way better when someone else, like The Temptations version of "Let It Be,"sings them. BAH on the Beatles.

So much music we ahve the pleasure to hold on to, and pass on too.
koolheat55 2 years ago
My brther, kookhead55, you're absolutely on time. Many of the greatest Motown songs were before they ever were played on 'pop music' stations.Smokey was writing them, well before the Holland-Dozier-Holland split.
Smokey and I are the sme age, and I still remember cuddling up to a beautiful young lady and following the road 'map' tha t Smokey laid down so beautifully. I know Smokey is in the Hall of Fame, but what about the Miracles? Put them in, as a group--they should be there!
bjclark1948 2 years ago
The beauty of the Motown Sound is not only how long it has endured, but the passsing along to our children. I know that it is very heartwarming to hear teenagers singing, My Girl, Heatwave, etc. Also the movie soundtracks that continue to reconize the how the sounds fits into movies of this age also. Let's keep reminding ourselves of what was given to the world by the Genius of the Sound of Hitsville, U.S.A.
koolheat55 2 years ago 2
The Miracles were the group that were of the longest duration when it came to producing different experimental styles of R&B(with either doowop or Cha-Cha beats), longer than most other groups for Motown because they had done that between 1958-1962(though they had one hit in that early period which was "Shop Around") whereas most other ones did it only in 1959-1960. The Miracles finally had begun to do the standard style for Motown in early 1963 with their next hit "You Really Got a Hold on Me".

@UnknownArtistX The MIRACLES" 1964 HIT, I LIKE IT LIKE THAT, IS on YouTube.
williamg2552 1 year ago
You do not like groups that don't write their own songs? Groups like the Temps can "work it ". The singer / songwriter relationship has to benefit both parties sometime, I'm sure that artists' feel this way. Hit songwriting must be a gift, but great songwriters need the "voices" as well (and vice versa). If it were easy everyone would do it, but I understand your point, the Miracles have been overlooked far too long!
