Good piece realnews! I have been saying this for years. It's a womans economy today. Construction took a big hit for obvious reasons and all the other manual labor type jobs (mechanic, maintenance etc.) that men have been doing for the past 50 years are becoming obsolete and being phased out completely. We don't need more American men bringing a lunch pail anymore. We have cheap labor in china. We have more teachers and nurses. Not mechanics and warehouse.
This has been the case for African American and some Hispanic families for generations. No one cared then. Everyone pathologized those groups as dysfunctional and culturally bankrupt. And now that this is a wider phenomenon, we have news stories. This is disgusting.
How about we end subsidies to massive state farms? They don't work because these farms deprive people of their land and produce things wastefully and inefficiently. The Soviet Union and Cuba discovered that they can't produce as well as small private plots and cooperatives and had to break them up as a result. I say give more people land to farm on and stop subsidizing all the pesticides and fertilizer, too.

While I support removing the subsidies on a lot of things, especially to the oil industry and corn farming, those subsidies, by being in place for so many years, have made the alternatives deeply unprofitable and created a dependence on the subsidy dollars. It's not just about turning them off but reversing them, for a period of time.

How about we end subsidies to massive state farms? They don't work because these farms deprive people of their land and produce things wastefully and inefficiently. The Soviet Union and Cuba discovered that they can't produce as well as small private plots and cooperatives and had to break them up as a result. I say give more people land to farm on and stop subsidizing all the pesticides and fertilizer, too.

The only way to get rid of subsidies is to get rid of relative tax advantages because they are the same thing.

@sonnybrown Not that simple. While I support removing the subsidies on a lot of things, especially to the oil industry and corn farming, those subsidies, by being in place for so many years, have made the alternatives deeply unprofitable and created a dependence on the subsidy dollars. It's not just about turning them off but reversing them, for a period of time.
