if you're on XP or higher, you go to control panel, region and language options, keyboards and languages, add... You can then set up hotkeys to switch between languages. The IME for japanese is entirely phonetic、so type ka for か　and when you hit space, it will try to make the kanji you're looking for かんじ　becomes 漢字　(I think that's the right one... It helps to know them before hand)
