  • Do you think there's a difference between reading the book and listening to an audio version? I mean if someone reads a book out loud (or even when you just read a book) you put your own inflection on it don't you? The way the characters sound, the way you pronounce certain words, the dialogue can be voiced a million different ways which changes the way you see the scene. Do you think you get a different sense of the book from hearing someone else read it or is it just the same?

  • @Chell532007 Oh definitely, I think there's an immersive quality in reading a book that you simply can't get having a book read too you. It's not something I could ever prove and arguably that is just my experience of reading vs listening but I think, for me, to truly enter the world of a book I have to read it myself.

That's not to say that audiobooks don't have their place. There are times when I can't read, times when I don't want to read, and for those times there are audiobooks.

  • @SableCaught Has anything ever annoyed you about that, are there specific examples of things you've listened to where you just thought "Hang on a second, that's not right?" Also do you think if an author reads their own work that that's less likely to happen?

  • Terry Pratchett audiobooks might be good too, been meaning to check them out. Tony Robinson reads the abridged versions.

  • @Chell532007 Also, thanks for the tip off about this - I got third prize!

  • Love audio books. I listen to them when I'm stuck in traffic, on the treadmill, etc. Can I enter to win some book? Thanks

  • @Nosaltypeanut Definitely click the top link in the video description and it will take you to iambik's site and tell you how ti win.

  • I use audio books for nonfiction and for stuff that requires patience like Tolkien and the Wheel of Time series.

I’d be interested to hear your opinion on ebook readers like the Kindle. While i see the appeal of having a real book in your hand the little voice in the back of my mind tells me: the devices are small, ebooks are cheaper, it saves on space books take up and its echo friendly. I'm tempted to get one. Maybe this would be worth doing a video on like this audio book video you just did.

  • @micronoid There's part of me that's really opposed to them, I've spent so long collecting books it seems to completely invalidate my life up to this point. I'd probably be more sympathetic if you could take a book you already own and transfer it onto your ereader (like with cds).

Then again I am starting to warm to them. Just some of the books I want to read are so bulky and heavy, and all the classics I have to get through for uni, it would be really hand to carry around a load.

  • @micronoid And to be able to highlight and take notes really easily as I'm reading.

But the classics are free, I buy most of my books second hand so actually buying them for the kindle would be more expensive.

I just love owning things as well. Love my room full of thousands of books.

  • I find that it depends on the reader's voice, and if they put the right emphasis where it is needed. That and if they use voices. Granted I've only listened to two audio books in my time; Philosopher's Stone (when it was played in completion on Radio 4 maybe 10 years ago now) and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, in which the reader really brought out the humour. In saying this (training to be an actor) I find that if I can't read with awesomeness coming out, then I've failed.

  • I LOVE audiobook because I actually look forward to household chores. I even ironed and started making much more elaborate dinners since I started listening to them :)

  • @gtaly Cooking is actually the one chore I enjoy and will do slowly, but yes, so much better with audiobooks!

  • I noticed the headphone right away, in my 32gb ipod other than the maybe 5gb of music, 5gb of apps and 5gb of digital books and comic books it's all audio books and audio dramas (mostly doctor who and dc comics audio dramas). I think I love them the most because reading will give me a headache late at night and sometimes books are really heavy to carry around with you (also why I have digital copies of a lot of books). Awesome video!

  • @TheJunkiesuperhero I think my ipod is currently entirely full of iambik's books XP (although I'm only 16gb)

  • I love audiobooks, but I tend not to buy many because they're always so expensive. I agree though, there are a lot of situations where they come in very handy. I think my choices are mainly based on whether I like the person reading the book though because they're always hours long obviously and who wants to get stuck listening to an annoying voice for such a long time? I got an audio version of Donna Tartt's Secret History, read by the author, which is awesome, you should check it out.

  • @Chell532007 Oooh, I'll have to have a look at it. See if you can win the iambik competition. Then you'll get a load of audiobooks for free ^___^

My brother loves listening to the How to Dragon your Dragon audiobooks. I realised the other day they're read by David Tennant. Might have to steal them from him XP

  • @SableCaught Also noticing a background change? Is this you at Uni?

  • @Chell532007 Yeah, I was gonna make a video to introduce you all to where I am now but then I realised if I didn't do this one quickly I would miss the comp. So expect next video to be about uni!

  • i like both alot, i like reading my long anticapted books and maybe catch the audio book later, i love the guys who do Harry Potter, i like Jim Dales Dumbledor the best, but Stephen Fry's Dobby lol

  • @Theb0YWh0lived1 Oh yeah, Stephen Fry reading The Harry Potter books was how I got to sleep pretty much every night of my childhood. At the same time, yeah, the moment they came out I would read the book first. The audiobook followed. On casette : D

  • I love both.. Audiobooks seem more different to me because the person reading it will emphasize things more or less of what I would by physically reading them... And heck yea I will enter that competition!!

  • @johnnyv272 Yeah, I think it's a really good comp! But yeah, it really does depend on who's reading them. For instance Tamora Pierce is one of my favourite authors but I just can't listen to the audio versions. The narrator is so monotone!

  • I do both! I work in an office doing a job that requires almost no concentration so I always listen to audiobooks while I'm there. I also read physical books at home and in between my classes during the week.

I seem to enjoy audiobooks of stories that are aimed at a younger audience, i.e. the Harry Potter series, His Dark Materials, Series of Unfortunate events. They tend to have descriptions that sound good read aloud.

  • @mooplink I think I listened to all those on audiobook (as well as reading them actually!), the Artemis Fowl series was also really good as audiobooks. When I was doing a shift before my bookshop opened we were allowed to listen to ipods while we worked. Shelving books while listening to audiobooks, that's the dream XP

  • I used to really love audio books. But one summer, I got a horrible eye infection and had to spend two months isolated in the dark in my bedroom. Having only audio books to entertain me during that time, I got a bit burnt out on listening to my books.

Then again I'd also usually had a lot of time to sit and actually read in spare time since then. But not so much anymore, so I might start getting back into audio books considering I do have a substantial commute every morning.

  • @MissLittleBug Yeah, they're really great to listen to while walking (or in my case on the tube when it's physically impossible to get a book out you're that squashed against your fellow commuters.

I remember once being really ill and feverish and listening to Chamber of Secrets, my mind really twisted it and made up a completely different version. I definitely remember it had green charms in it you wore round your neck.

  • first! love the videooooo!
