I think you're discounting the affect that the Internet has had on our society and the real reason people can even be described as 'new atheists'. Neil is basically telling him to remember Carl Sagan and how much he did for the public understanding of science (which IS his professorial job...or was). There's laughter and agreement all around because they all know this.
@heeh2 Of course it makes sense, im saying that dawkins "sharpness of teeth" and his gravitas is half of his appeal. We know what a professorial atheist looks like in todays society we have Daniel Dennet. Not as many people hear him.

Yes, but how many people know who Carl Sagan is? Anyway, the comment was made when Dawkins was the professor for the public understanding of science.
