  • I've got what I think is the book pc 1, but i cant find any info about it at all

  • Nice computer, it's one of my favorites because it's small and portable, but the HP E-PC Series is smaller and more powerful then that so that's my other favorite, i don't know why VIA made their CPUs run like crap because the C3 667 MHz runs simaler to a Pentium MMX 233 MHz CPU, 256MB of RAM isn't enough to run XP with SP3, downgrade it to SP1 or RTM to make it run faster, if not the install Windows 2000 on it, it should run good on a C3 667 MHz

  • sounds a lot like an IDT Centaur WinChip. low clock speed, low power, and not too much heat was produced. Did you ever use or own a machine with a winchip? I had one and I'd say it was like using a fast 486, Not quite Pentium 133 speed.

  • @IamFat32 Like I wrote in the video description, the VIA C3 processor is a direct descendant of the WinChip.

  • Now I have a Commodore 64C!

  • Nice video! Never knew that VIA marketed CPUs.

  • hey i have an old i giga pro cpu as well apparently with some old crap boards they would send that cpu with the board.

  • Sim city 3 song? in your computer ^^?

  • Seeing this video again, it seems that you have only 248MB of RAM, which indicates that the on-board graphics (if any graphics haha) controller is reserving RAM. Do you know the chipset or graphics controller on this PC?

  • @ceracecar Everything has to be "on-board", because there are no slots! I don't recall offhand which graphics chipset it uses, but it definitely does "steal" some of the main system RAM for use as the video RAM.

  • Full-size ITX but no PCI slots!?!? Even my mini-ITX computer has a PCI slot...

  • I have the book PC 1, Both very nice computers though very under-powered. The blanked off plates are indeed for S-video and Composite. Originally it would have come with a 4.7GB hard drive and 64MB RAM. Mind you, no-matter what OS I use, I cannot get the modem to be recognised.

  • u said that thing had a slot 370 processor right. cause if u did try a Pentium 3 with a better heat sink and fan and see if it helps it any

  • Honestly I wonder if I can find any of these "Book PCs" around today, because they look fairly unique. I'd like one of these as a kitchen computer...

  • ECS Elitegroup is cheap and shit. my mobo is a ecs. and its crap. thankfully in a few weeks i'm getting my dads old pc which has a good gigabyte mobo.

  • @Bethefisher I agree, but I am not getting offers to buy the SX-280s I repaired, they are the same in the modern terms as BookPCs in the past, in this time, with quad core and AMD64, DDR3, SATA 2, etc., The BookPC is finding favor for car audio installers! Who'dda thunk it?

  • @duranmedine And WMP 10 is better still, so if you have Vista or Windows 7, use the matching WMP11, but downgrade to WMP 10 for the best refined 9x version!

  • @ThePartnerSubscriber I was dismayed at some Gateways and others capping the PII at 333Mhz, when you can run a PII at 450Mhz, and upgrade to 500Mhz Celeron with a SlotKit if you use Slot 1 CPU packages

  • Wow, look at the views you got in such a short time, most people get bored with Hardware show and tell videos, not me. I lost my driver disc, so I was having a helluva time getting the drivers for mine, the second PC I ever owned, bought mine from a rash sale of them on eBay, all ending about the same time, I paid around $200 for mine, the chipset is not VIA that I am aware of ...it's SiS, Silicon Integrated Systems, still around and did many graphics cards for a time in the late 90s. P III CPU

  • I used to have a Book PC when I was but a lad, mine was the first revision though that came with a Cyrix MII 300 and 32MB of RAM, with a 4GB HDD.

It ran Windows 98 and I used to make Unreal maps on it (it had some kind of Trident Blade video adapter that didn't really run it that well)

  • @3oMethylmorphine Most I think have SiS if they are bk630 series motherboards, as I researched them for some time

  • My laptop's built-in speakers do work but sound horible than the yours

  • Realy great video and good PC, but i'm not totaly agrre with you about PC CHips motherboard, i have 2 PC Chips M848A V2.1 motherboard, one since it was new and the other since about 2 years and both work well and my first one i've by mistake take out a memorys stick when the pc running and the slot died by the motherboard still works so i think the're really good board. My 3 years old asus P5B-Deluxe is a crap compare to these board.

  • @oldmac6 Asus mobo is in my third PC ever, still running, I collect old machines and most are working still, so it's not one brand that fails all the time, it's the pick of the lot/luck of the draw. The Asustek is in a Compaq SR1220NX that I upgraded, used to use Celeron D, now Pentium 4 and 8400GS nVidia PCI! These BookPCs are good for multimedia storage since they store easily and can fit any large PATA drive, PATA can be found up to 400GB I've seen in stores here!!

  • i got a very nasty shock on one of these so you may want to check your psu or replace it ifyou can find one the psu that blew in my one was 100w

  • My schools library's still have some of these. They're used for checking out books.

  • @ThePartnerSubscriber trust me dude, the sound coming out of these speakers is that worthy of gods holy ears...

  • @ThePartnerSubscriber i do :) my netbooks speakers outpiut hd audio :P

  • The usual drill for ECS/PCChips boards. crappy capacitors (in this case G-Luxon and Teapo), which dry up (without bloating ; esp. the G-Luxons) and cause all kinds of weird problems.

I'd recap both the board and the PSU and use it as a little homeserver or NAS or something.

The CPU is soldered to the board BTW. as the HS is spring-mounted, i'd dig around for chipset heatsinks that fits and use that instead or use a new 40mm fan @ 5V.

those are less than 10W CPUs. no need for beefy cooling.

  • @Knaeckebrotsaege Nope, it's not soldered to the board, the CPU is traditional ZIF 370 socket, and I would not bother putting capacitors in where they are not needed, I never had a problem with that, just a failed PSU in which I'd recommend a backup spare. The main Northbridge is SiS which handles the graphics. Mine is the Bk650e for BookPC, PCChips or ECS made similar if not identical boards

  • a desktop pc for $5 bucks cheap cheap cheap wow but i know why its $5 bucks cause it missing its hardrive and some stuff

  • These PC's must have been extremely cheap for its time, when do you think it was made? I remember when I was at school my friends always talked about how shit PC Chips motherboards were. This PC would probably only be good wor some internet browsing and work processing and similar tasks. I'm guessing this originally came with Windows 98. Why not put Ubuntu or Linux Mint on it? I guess these PC's would have been good for schools or libraries.

  • @Lachlant1984 Linus has many advantages, but for me it'd be a lot of time and effort to learn another operating system which doesn't work with most of the programs I use. Windows XP runs surprisingly well on the Book PC, especially now that I've upgraded it to the max of 512 MB of RAM. Overall I like the Book PC; I just wish the fans inside were quieter. My other small desktop PCs run near-silently.

  • @vwestlife That's a fair call, Linux isn't for everyone, I'm still using XP but soon Mac OS. Have you worked on Linux before? My HP computer is an SFF PC, and it's almost silent. I have to ask what kind of a company name is PC Chips? Not a very creative name and it doesn't really inspire interest or confidence in their hardware. You talk about Book PC, is Book the system manufacture, or does the manufacturer use the word Book to describe the form factor?

  • @Lachlant1984 I tried Red Hat Linux years ago but quickly gave up because the installation process was very complex and confusing and it didn't properly support my video card. "Book PC" is the name PC Chips gave to this type of small desktop system. There are still new Book PCs being sold today, although I'm not sure if PC Chips makes them or some other company.

  • @vwestlife PCChips and Elite Group AKA ECS are basically identical computers, the companies make parts for other more notable companies I believe, having the ECS logo on there really helps, mind is very much generic in indicators but I have those same docs that came with it. Compare the size with Dell's SX280 and GX 620 that are what they call uSFF, Ultra Small Form Factor, BTX or ITX motherboards are similar I think

  • @vwestlife You should try out Ubuntu. Its really easy to install and use, if you are looking into Linux. But XP does a good job on older machines, its just starting to show its age.

  • @Lachlant1984 The BIOS said October 16 2001 for manufactured date

It might have come with a very early build of Windows XP or Windows 2000 or ME

  • @Lachlant1984 I bought my first PC in 2000, the BookPC was the second one, so 2001 into 2002. I paid $200 or more at auction on Ebay so they were not really "cheap" unless you were inclined to pay $600 or more for one at the time, I guess??

  • I serviced a few BookPC Mk1s for my school's library.

Their main issue was that they drained the CMOS battery after only a couple of years (even quality branded batteries). Given how hard they were to access, this turned out to be a real pain in the bum :)

  • windows xp registered to William H. Gates III? LOLOL

  • Seems to me like Windows FLP (Fundamentals for Legacy PCs), which is basically a Microsoft-nLite'd XP, would work better on that system, because, albeit, the requirements are the same (not a problem for you), it'll run MUCH better on that system.

I tried it on an old Pentium III 600 ThinkPad X20 I have and it worked a lot better.

  • @TheGeek1028 nLite just makes the Setup files useable outside of the XP disc, and allows you to front load the options, as I understand it, this helping me with a PW protected laptop HDD setup which booted only from the HDD not the Win XP startup disc. It would help to get rid of OS features you don't require

  • @MetallicBill You don't understand what I'm saying.

nLite is a lighter version of XP, from my understanding, which is what FLP is. A Microsoft- made XP Lite.

  • @TheGeek1028 I used nLite to do a bypass of locked BIOS, on this vary laptop, and I used an Upgrade copy of Windows Home SP2 as the source, IIRC, due to the scratch condition being better I felt, but it's worrisome because the COAs will likely NOT match in such cases (full versus Upgrade path) nLite as I know it, should allow the SETUP to be on a flash drive or HDD, external an option, and features are chosen ahead of time in the setup stage (nLite's not Windows own I'm referring to)

  • licensed to bill gates.. lol. :)

is the via processor in this machine x86 compatible? because if not then it really isn't too usable..

  • @bamdadkhan The VIA C3 is an x86 processor. It uses Socket 370, just like the Coppermine-series Pentium III and Celeron chips.

  • @vwestlife i stand corrected.

  • @vwestlife Mine is using a Pentium 3 at 1Ghz, and 512MB is supported from what I recall, so 1GB of RAM as well, it's nice, uses regular 3.5 drives or a laptop one could work for more cooling space, I only had to replace the PSU (from EBay as well!) once and it was back and running and I still have it right here, not far away from where I type. It is SAID to support 6 channel for Dolby Digital along with enough juice for DVD, and it makes for a Car media PC for cars with nice stereo/video

  • my netbook has HD audio :P

  • Pc Lan Party

    it should run hl1

  • Does it play youtube videos?

  • @ClactonRadio Y E S, just load Active X version of Adobe Flash and the 10.2 revision update, I put them on USB drives for any computer that's not on the Internet, and you just run them from there, they are very compact,

  • It's good that the thing still works ok for only 5 dollars. Registered to Bill Gates? haha :-)

  • Thank you for buying a Dell Notebook. 5:50

  • Wow my droid is faster than this PC. lol Great video Vwestlife.

  • @xmaddict

well this pc is shitloads of old

  • While the mobo indicates "ECS" as the brand, the logo on the power supply is clearly PC Chips (or as many people say it "PC Sh!ts") ECS and PC Chips are all the same thing, I've seen some that are actually socket 370, allowing for an intel Celeron (or maybe a PIII)

  • Very nice little computer! That thing, although underpowered, is surprising featured with a full port set and all.

I'm extremely surprised the power supply is only 54 watts! If you were to put the approximate specs of this computer in Antec's power supply calculator, you would probably get something around 250 watts! Now I KNOW I can safely put an older video card in my Compaq without fear of blowing the 145 watt PSU.

    Great video!

  • ooh, I love the small and odd machines. Great score for $5, nice haul.

  • did you know? : i think windows 7 would run on that machine like home basic or home premium or starter

  • Ooo, looks like fun! I've never seen or heard of these before. As far as those cd drive flaps are concerned, I HATE them. Definitely more of a pain than they're worth.

  • The newer ECS-PC Chips boards are much better quality than the ones they made in the 90's that gave them the bad rep. But they are still budget performance boards.

I wonder if there's any way to upgrade the VIA processor to a Intel.

  • I like it! And for $5 how could you go wrong...

Not sure what it could be used for but I am sure something can be done with it.

  • Pretty quick little machine for it's speed.

  • PC Chips/ECS Group... ugh the headaches fixing machines with those boards. I remember the whole C-Media modem driver fiasco, the driver website sucks. I also remember these boards having trouble with memory for no apparent reason, check that DIMM in another machine with memtest86 to see if its indeed bad.

The good thing is that its Socket 370, so you can swap in a better CPU. The last IDT Winchip I dealt with was in an iOpener I hacked (and still have), it lacked cache and was SLOW.

  • Since it uses only 50 watts to run you could turn it into a server or an internet firewall

  • At 3:26 i see one dead (blow) capacitor... Maybe I'm wrong, but check them out for shure!

  • @acecono The caps all look fine to me.

  • Do you know what year this was made? It looks fairly new. I'd say around 5-10 years by the looks

  • @MixerVM It's a Samuel 2 chip, so no older than 2001, if the CPU is an original fit.

  • @Lukeno52 The BIOS is dated Oct.13, 2001.

  • I've always loved small computers for some reason.....This one seems nice

  • ha, i like the way you registered windows as 'William H. Gates III'

  • ...the Via C3 is possibly the worst performing (per MHz) CPU on the planet :-)

    dansdata . com/c3.htm

^^ he got an 800MHz CPU.

    'Slower than a 500MHz P3'

Nice find though.. for $5 you can't go wrong!

  • You plan upgrading the RAM? 256mb is hardly enough for XP SP3..

Think you can get rid issue with the DVD tray sticking to the faceplate thingie by removing to plate at the top of the DVD tray....you have to do the same thing on Power Mac G5 and Mac Pro computers

  • @Jivemaster2005 i have using my old laptop now with windows 7 theme with xp sp3 with antivirus wuth a 600mhz and p111 and 600mhz 128mb of ram wireless internet it fast it is a dell Inspiron 5000

  • @Jivemaster2005 Downgrade Service Packs, all XP originally required is 233Mhz CPU and 48 to 64 MB Sys RAM, I installed on 64MB RAM systems, for Dell models 110 Optiplex

  • nice

  • OMG, a C-Media Audio-Chip... I've got one in an old HP Vectra VL and always, when it tries to acces the sound-card, a bsod comes up.... and BTW: I'm the first viewer xD

  • @Halterung01 I've got more then a few C-Media, the driver has an audio mixer you always find on the lower right Task Bar, and mine never failed to work. There are also C-Media 6 and 7 channel PCI cards on the market
