i was there on holiday when that happened we were on an island called kia and we saw loads of helicopars (can't spell) from others countrys luckely we were ok when we came back to the mainland but then we got worried because the main road to the airport was closed but it opened again the day before we left
I read some comments here and I totally disagree with some of them. I'm Spanish and European and I cared about Greece. I care about every single European country.
Devastating fires in the south, floods in the centre and north... Hopefully, the EU was created long time ago and now we're in time to fight against the climate change.
No. The Turkish aid never cross Greece. Before cross the borders they call them back (Nobody knows why).Later the Turkish TV (goverrment) said that the Greeks didnt accept their help. Xaxaxaxa always the same story. But the Turkish mission get ungry with Turkish goverment as they said.
My grandparents had to leave because of those fires. The EU was not the quickest in responding...but this is a learning experience. I would hope that Greece will help another country in their time of need so that no one will have to go through that. To turn on the tv here in America and see one of my countries burning, and see people dying is beyond the scope of my imagination. As a supporter of the EU, to see any European die over something like this simply unacceptable.
The EU should have one military power. That's the only way the EU can be efficient enough in case of emergency and other threats. It doesn't make any sense that every country in the EU has it's own small army with no influence. Furthermore it would be much cheaper to have a common army.
You want the EU to be in charge of your countries military??. Giving control of any countries militay and protection means ceding their soveriegnity to the EU.
What about Russians? They forgot to mention 8 planes from Russia including gigantic Be-200. I do not know number of Russian helicopters that went there.
Wait! We(I am Greek too)didnt payed! When Russia placed an offer for Greece(a very good one) for some Berievs but Greece didnt accept them..Why? Because they were Russian..

Turkish deputy reveals: 'Grey Wolves' are behind arson fires in Greece
Arm the Spirit, 1 December 1996
A Turkish deputy from Tansu Ciller's True Path Party (DYP) yesterday revealed that Turkish paramilitary organizations are responsible for arson fires in Greece's islands while, at the same time, an article published in the pro-government Turkish daily "Yeni Safak" provocatively boasted in its title: "We Burned Rhodes."
i was in greece when the fires started. There was a fire near the airport that i left from. I havn't herd weather they have managed to get the fires under control yet cause the news stopped reporting on it. I hope it has. Greece is my favorite holiday destination and i feel great loss when places i visit regulary are burned. such as areopolis and lemeni.
I don't want to sound ungrateful, but the only countries that offered immidiate help were France,Italy and Cyprus. And they didn't do it because of the EU,but because we have best relations as countries. All the rest started sending aid from day 3 on,when more or less the worst part was gone
Still,we thank them all and we hope you won't need us to repay the favour one day
The only ones who did not help where the scumbag albanians. they sent only 10 firemen(suposely-because I doubt it if the have a firfighting unit) and after the fire they decided to stay in Greece to stela and sell heroine
Abolutely true.Turkey sent an awe-inspiring fleet of 1 planes to help us,when Greece alone has 25 planes and I don't know how many helicopters, while France sent 8 planes,Italy 4,Serbia 6,Cyprus and Israel hundreds of firefighters, ect.I don't know what we would have done without you Turkey!Thank you so much

Turkey and Greece has to have the best firefighting system in the world because every summer millions of acres of forest are burning. But unfortunately they do not have that yet. In spite of this, the governments spend huge amounts of their money to the army instead of protecting the forest. Same with my country (Turkey)
But the Greek government was too shy (or what ever) to ask for more and for specialized help.

Our politicians are a rotten rat pack! The Greek ones because they don't ask for more help and because they don't allow unconventional fire fighting methods bringing into their county, and the other ones because they didn't offer aggressively more and specialized help.

What the fuck are you saying ? That it is a good thing that the trees burnt down so we can get new ones ? what about all the people that died and lost their homes is that good also?
I've gotta say, being a Canberran who witnessed the 2003 bushfires, I feel for you all. A fire of this magnitude just makes me feel bad for the people that are suffering. I just wish there was more I could do to help.
Greece is needed right now. Im greek and I wish that this would have never happened. we've lost many people in this fire. :( and it is so hurtful that not that many people care about greece. so you should learn to think of others and not just your own countries and places. Because Greece is a great place and if you were there you would know. I could have lost my friend that was in greece on vacation during this time but thank god that i didnt.
What are you talking about, 'not many people care about Greece'?
What utter crap.
All Europeans, and everyone that were informed about these fires, cared about Greece and were horrified thinking about the devastation.
Not just the awful fires; but the deaths, the destruction of nature, and the financial ruin of so many people that will have a hard time trying to rebuild their lives.
In the second page of comments someone named Japanesexxx
made a comment saying that all this are terrorists made.
Will i laugh now or later? You think that everything not good is made by terrorists? You are a just blind shhep ready to be eaten by the masonic wolfs...
there is no law in greece that says when there is a forest fire someone must replant the forest with new trees. instead, the developers can claim this new land. that could be a big motivation for the arsonists.
We all need to work together in helping with disasters like this. Maybe if we did and thought about being good stewards of this earth we could save this planet and mankind. Americans and the rest of the world need to think more about this rather than terrorizing and killing each other.
Same story all over. Those arsonists in extreme greed for construction sites have burnt down millions of acres of forests in Turkey and none of them was ever brought before justice. Greek government has now a duty to prove that it is just another EU law state by bringing the perpetrators to the courts and give them the harshest penalties.
My heart goes to those who lost their loved ones in the fires.
I believe France once had this problem and legislated that such burntout lands could not be developed for 30 years. This stopped the arsonists and anyone who applied for a permit to develop was fined.Isnt Greece part of the EU?How about a new positive law?
the greek goverment sucks!they left 60 something people die and all these forests get burnt.. i hate them...(p.s. i'm greek...what a shame...)THANKS EUROPE without you we would all be gone...
From efe agency: Countries that have helped Greece with firefighting help: Austria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, spain, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Turkey.
then what is wrong with ur country??? just because there is nothing wrong with ur country it doesnt mean u can u just sit there and laugh.. malaka.. we who come from greece are deavistated and u sit and do nothing... esai blakas
why do ppl rate the comment from Joupthefin so bad?if he´s right(which i dont know and i dont have time right now to do research) then all the things he wrote in there(more or less xD) are right...
I don't follow you. Who 's selling tanks to whom? Racism? Why? Did we throw you out of our borders? I don't understand what's your point and if you have any? Who told you that we didn't want your help?
I was supposed to go to Greece for 10 days at the end of August with my class. I hope there's something left (we'll probably go at the end of September or beginning of October).
In 20 years the forests will come back healthier and stronger. You guys just make sure that the arsonists who started these fires to usurp the land do not get their way. Ask the question "Cui Bono?" (who benefits?) and put the right people in jail not a scapegoat. If the officials claim that some shepherd did it, then the officials themselves are complicit.
I am Greek and the help from our European brothers has really touched my heart... such strong bonds between us Europeans makes me say that I feel first European and happy yo be amonst such a fine brotherhood of nations! Greece will never forget your aid during this dark moment for us!
The Greek government better not allow developers to build on their last forest and replant the area. How long does urban sprawl have to keep destroying our planet? Make a Difference, go green.
My deepest condolences to all who lost their dear ones, hope that the cradle of Europe will soon rise as Phoenix...and reborn unique in its beauty...proseuxomai ston Theo na sas dosei kouragio kai na katadikazei ekeinous kakopoious opoii ekanan auto to egklima...
the only help greece got was 2 french planes and a big help from cyprus.... none of the other European nations sent any help....in addition the whole country is on fire and at 16 September we vote for a new government..... all of these politicians know anly to talk "bla, bla, bla". how can u trust someone who didn't even finish school IN greece but in USA and then comes back and asks for our votes??
This is Greece...nit Sparta...Us and our foolish, selfish country and its leaders!!!Yes, I am Greek and I couldn't be more upset about what's going on!And of course this is happening only because some sick-with-money people burn down the whole country in order to built there!!!This is a general biological disaster!Greece has about 6000 species of plants...or should I say had!The summer was rough, hot...but the winter is going to be even harder!
so they havent found the people responsible ?.. they need a kick up the ass !.. and what you do with people who light fires is brand the palms of their hands with the word 'Arsonist'
This is some of ther worst fires ive scene expet for the ones in Australia especially ash wednesday that hit canberra in 1983 were 75 lives were lost and almost 3000 houses and buildings lost. Goodluck greece Australia knows what your going through :(
A wake up call for all of us. The U.S. had Katrina, the tsunami of southeast asia, Turkey's earthquakes, the droughts of Africa and the list goes on. We all need each other at certain times. No nation should have to stand alone during such difficult times. I'd love to think there's help out there for us when it's our turn. Best of luck to the Greeks and cheers to all those lending a hand.
Thank you. We'll surely need all the help we can get, for after all these huge fires, flooding will come in winter and very high temperatures in summer. We already reached 48C this summer, probably breaking a record in our history - I guess a 50C is sure to come next summer!
This is a very good initiative that has a direct impact on the disaster. However, we must also think about fine-tune operational protocols in terms of strategic and tactical planning to avoid such a chaotic co-ordination in the last days (fortunately it seems that international forces put some order in it). Initiatives like this entail a stronger feeling of European citizenship. Thanks to EC. Read my opinion on this in my blog at blogspot DOT com
How can you say that? How about reading history and NOT watching "300"!?This was ancient Greece...the Greece we are proud of!This is Greece we're ashame of!
Leonidas had no option of returning to Sparta...they had a law to "Win or Die".otherwise they would be executed in Sparta(if they drew back)!
And it's not a few fires...It's the half Greece burning you asshole!
hi guys i m from greece...europe sent many planes to kill yougoslavians but here, where the fire touch our bodies they send only 100..it s unbelievable...they laugh with our distruction...we need help we try of ourselves, without helping,to escape our houses our bodies our children from tha fire..we hope..we just hope..thank you all the ordinary people-and not politicans-for the support..bye
Im going to Greece in 2 weeks for my honeymoon..if possible Id like to bring some clothes which I no longer need with me for the people who lost their homes. Does anyone know if this is necessary or if there will be people collecting these? I will be in Athens for 2 nights so if anyone knows where I could bring a donation please message me. Thank you!
P.S.-Ill take no offense so the ignorant people on here who call Americans "stupid" or "rednecks".
man its too bad that people are arguing on this comment board, my yiayia is homeless now, its awful, but i have to give a huge thanks to all those helping out
May God bless you with strenght and support. Never give up!!!! A true Greek is one that dosent give up even when things look grim. Thx to all who support Greece in their time of need.
It would of been nice if they had mentioned that Isreal sent a contengent and they are not even part of the EU. But... great job to everyone who went and helpled.
100 firefighters can man almost 25-30 firetrucks! so ..YES they are a big help ...if u could see ..several villages burnt coz there was not even 1 fire truck availlable...Thanx fellow Europeans .. we wont forget ..any time u need us,we'll be here for u
well is it over now? i think you must have accepted Turkey's help request. Turkey is your neighbour so it is close to you, they can send help faster than eu. and this will help us improve the relationships between turkey and greece. i think 18 fire helcopters are not enough. turkey could have sended 20 airplanes for help and 200 firefighters if you asked for it.
thats sad for Greece and whats even more sad is EU sends 18 planes and 16 helicopters and calls that solidarity. CHEAP propaganda. Australia could have sent more than 50 helicopters, 100 planes easy. EU if you think 16 helicopters is big deal your behind im sure the Americans are also laughing at this.
I don't understand why all comments saying "Only 100 firefighters?" have been rated as poor comments so they aren't shown. Rediculous.
Feedback shouldn't be hidden just because it isn't all praising. Great that EU has sent as much as it has, but still the numbers leave me thinking "Shouldn't we be able to send a lot more?"
I agree with you, but maybe the issue is how much do we *have* to send?
Not every country in Europe has a coastline, and may not have many/any? firefighting planes or helicopters.
I don't know, but what I do know is that people really wanted to help so any shortcomings in assistance wasn't due to lack of support from the European public.
I hope that all of the EU comes together in Greece's time of need... an amazing amount of European history is in Greece... I hope that it can be saved! Good luck, and God Bless all those helping there!
Wow....18 planes, 18 helos and nearly 100 fire-fighters! What a joke! There are 27 member nations of the EU and this was all you could scrounge up? You EU folks seriously need to Come over to the States and see how we fight wildland fires with the smokejumpers. 18 out of 27? That's pathetic!
The European Union will hopefully collapse.

Icecreamgal134 4 years ago
What are you talking about, 'not many people care about Greece'?
What utter crap.
All Europeans, and everyone that were informed about these fires, cared about Greece and were horrified thinking about the devastation.
Not just the awful fires; but the deaths, the destruction of nature, and the financial ruin of so many people that will have a hard time trying to rebuild their lives.
Of course we care!

there is no law in greece that says when there is a forest fire someone must replant the forest with new trees. instead, the developers can claim this new land. that could be a big motivation for the arsonists.

But Finland is part of EU, right?
So whether you're part of NATO or not, who cares?!
I mean, Norway isn't part of the EU, but they accepted our help.
Not sure how much we could contribute with, as we're a small country - population wise, but then again, so is Finland...

Best of luck to the Greeks and cheers to all those lending a hand.
nighthawkX13 4 years ago 5

Read my opinion on this in my blog at blogspot DOT com

well is it over now? i think you must have accepted Turkey's help request. Turkey is your neighbour so it is close to you, they can send help faster than eu. and this will help us improve the relationships between turkey and greece. i think 18 fire helcopters are not enough. turkey could have sended 20 airplanes for help and 200 firefighters if you asked for it.
napalmstrike2007 4 years ago
thats sad for Greece and whats even more sad is EU sends 18 planes and 16 helicopters and calls that solidarity. CHEAP propaganda. Australia could have sent more than 50 helicopters, 100 planes easy. EU if you think 16 helicopters is big deal your behind im sure the Americans are also laughing at this.
Kiyaz 4 years ago
Because the Americans sure can handle a disaster, and send aid quickly, just look at hurricane Katrina.
There was even talk about sending a ferry from up here in the Nordic countries, but it was declined.
Sure they could help their people if they wanted, with the worlds biggest air force it shouldn't be so hard...
Abductedsky 4 years ago
I don't understand why all comments saying "Only 100 firefighters?" have been rated as poor comments so they aren't shown. Rediculous.
Feedback shouldn't be hidden just because it isn't all praising. Great that EU has sent as much as it has, but still the numbers leave me thinking "Shouldn't we be able to send a lot more?"
Pegasos989 4 years ago
I agree with you, but maybe the issue is how much do we *have* to send?
Not every country in Europe has a coastline, and may not have many/any? firefighting planes or helicopters.
I don't know, but what I do know is that people really wanted to help so any shortcomings in assistance wasn't due to lack of support from the European public.
