  • [sarcasm] Text [/sarcasm]

  • why is a Amish dude with a hole in his forehead talking about the internet!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • On Tumblr you often see sarcasm depicted by strike-through text. I think that work really well.

  • YEA YOUU GUYSS LETSS JUST TAKE TIME OUT OF OUR REALLYYYY BUSY LIVESS TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO TXT SARCASM!! GUDD IDEA CAUSE MOST CELL FONEZ IN THA WORLD ONLY HAVE TXT ONLY MODES AND NO ONE THATS NORMAL GOES TO CLUBS OR PARTYS ANY MORE AND TALK IN PERSON ITS ALLL ABOUUT SOCIAL NETWORKING NOWW!!!

  • [sar] Good video. Great beard! [/casm]

  • me and my friend put // in front of and behind anything we mean to be sarcastic

  • I also had scars from neurosurgeries.

  • we could rock mmo style and put "/sarcasm" or "/sarc" in front of sarcastic remarks :P

  • @TasarlaSkaara similar to this I use mock html tags on most things but YouTube comments don't allow it

  • Maybe left instead of right slanted italics might work?

  • a random letter in the word is capital (exluding the first word) so a sarcastic sentence would go like this : thIs iS actUaLly a gReat idEA

  • There actually IS a font type that many people use for sarcasm, and a movement around making it universal. It's just incredibly ugly, because it's basically italic, but tilted in the opposite direction. Which just looks...weird. It hurts my eyes, personally.

I go with spazzumgurl's method, I tend to follow up sarcasm with [/sarcasm] if I think it may be unclear.

  • I've been trying to post this all day, but apparently including < instead of [ gave it errors.

  • @AdamTheAlien yeah using the greater than and less than symbols makes it an end tag in html/xml even if it isn't a real one and so it doesn't allow it here on YouTube... I found that out the hard way myself

  • I think that double s looking symbol thing would work well for sarcasm. Or the sarcmark...if it were free.

  • comic sans... right>?

  • See, when I'm being sarcastic in comments, I tend to use [/sarcasm] at the end to denote that I have ceased being sarcastic.

  • Karen YES make a sarcastic font type!!

    how about:

    ::s::blah blah blah::/s::

  • POLKA DOTS!!!

  • Pst ... the sarcmark?

    - Jason

  • the symbol already exists. it's called the sarcmark, and it will neeeeever catch on because it looks stuuuuupid.

  • (X) <-- That's a good symbol, right? =D

  • A company has tried to make a symbol to denote sarcasm, I'll try to find the link to an article about that. A type face would make so much more sense. In the mean time I usually do something like "/sarcasm" to be extra clear. I avoid being sarcastic online generally, to avoid the ultimate inevitable mix-up.

  • \(^^}/

    There you go! A symbol!

  • I remember a Rocketboom video where they discussed people trying to create a sarcastic symbol but it never caught on. It was kind of like a swirl. But yes this is totally needed.

  • *THIS COMMENT IS SARCASTIC*

  • Although I like the Sarcasm face that RaurieLeigh suggested (the ¬ symbol is alt 170), ususally the thing that we do on deviantart is add *sarcasm* after the sentence. Then again, there is no character limit on deviantart, and just about everywhere else on the internet there is (this frustrates me, because I can't usually say all I want to say in 500 characters, but that's another issue entirely).

  • Yeah we really need one of those.

  • I often put this face at the end of the sentence ¬_¬

Cause I think that face means "as if"

Eg. No I totally love X Factor, I watch it every week ¬_¬

  • How about putting at the start "This is my sarcastic font. NOT!"

  • check the wikipedia article Irony_punctuation

i believe this will do the trick. all keyboards should have this key

  • how about aterix at beginning and end?

example: "yeah jim i *really love that pullover you bought me*"

  • I LIKE this idea!

  • How about making a typeface, that would stretch the text out, so one letter would fill the space of two letters (or one and a half)

So instead of "Sarcasm", it would fill as much as "SSaarrccaassmm".

Am I making any sense at all...?

  • Sometimes when I am unsure if something is coming across as sarcastic, I end it with /sarcasm.

  • ..▲

    ▲ ▲

    I feel the same way.

  • But maybe part of the beauty of sarcasm is in the confusion and the mystery. Maybe sarcasm is at its best when you can't tell whether or not it's there. Then again, maybe I'm being sarcastic.

  • I've always hated that about text comments, that they lack the nuances of emotion and tone. I tend to use emoticons to make my meaning more clear, but really, I don't like emoticons that much. It would be great to have some standard for denoting sarcasm. I'm sure it would prevent many unfortunate misunderstandings...hm...

  • as far is i understand it this emoticon ;) can be used to display sercasm.

  • 0:57 "youtobe"?

  • @LukeConnerL I think it sounds more like "YouTub" like a BathTub just for You

  • @themefund At first I heard "Youtobe", but after reading your comment I have to agree that it is "Youtub". The fact that you left it in there makes me Bro-love you even more.

And my first thought for the Font type was that you could actually use parenthesis-things. Like: | that'll happen |

    ) that'll happen (

    ^ that'll happen ^

This is actually preferable, because not every website/forum will support this new invented type thats used specifically for sarcasm. Use symbols that we already have

  • @themefund Either way you make a really good point here :) Love your vids.

  • I think we should use this ~ at the beginning of a sarcastic sentence. What else are you going to use it for?

  • What about Times Roman BiteMe? Helvetica Pissed? I kid, I kid because I love.

Seriously, though, the motivators used to tell us in those seminars in the 80s (were you even alive in the 80's?) "Communication is 10% words - the rest is how it's being said."

Textually comm (textual harrassment?) loses nuances of understanding. Think of the words "Ice Cream" written. Whispered - a secret need. Shouted in horror - lactose intolerance. Video comments are the way. Ironic I wrote this, eh?

  • @quackdamnu I was born in 84

I agree completely. Spoken word has forever been granted an almost mystic power. It's been around longer than the written word and Humans have adapted much better systems in our brains that tell us what is ACTUALLY being said. Subtext is infinitely more obvious when it is spoken.

  • @themefund b4 I forget - wasn't kicking you for being young (I've been around since - u may want to sit - 59). I often assume people will get a reference but they don't because the age difference negates cultural references. Sometimes not. Like life in general, it's a mixed bag.

Even in what should be a rich comm medium things like font frustration can occur. I have a friend who's forever asking "Why can't people tell when I'm joking?" Despite his best efforts, people don't get it.

  • i like the mysticism that come with text communication. people tend to reveal too much online.

  • @cloudbots nope, although I did think about that after I'd recorded the video :P

  • Didn't they already create the Sarc mark?

  • @AleeshaC but it's not free or universal.

  • As our world is becoming more reliant on text communication (texting, forums, email, etc.) this is an excellent proposal. No longer will confusion or conflict ensue when i send my girlfriend a sarcastic text or facebook wall post! I fully support declaring a sarcasm font type!

  • This would definitely make my life better as I'm constantly sarcastic in real life, and, as we all know, sarcasm via text usually gets taken the wrong way.

Usually I'll make a sarcastic statement followed by

    /sarcasm

    That gets pretty old, though.

Sometimes I'll capitalize random words to get the point across that I'm emphasizing certain words... that's just me, though. My closest friends have come to understand that when I do that I'm most likely joking about most of what I just said.

  • @Zheel I agree with the captialisation tactic as well. "Of course you are" really spreads its wings when written as "Of COURSE you are".

  • There was a couple weeks of kerfluffle on the CBC as to whether or not the internet would adopt a sarcasm punctuation mark, the coveted "sarcmark" (I will message the link to you). Since then I have heard of people simply using the @ symbol at the end of their respective sarcastic sentences

  • You could do. "I love being punched in the face multiple times. (sarcasm)" or perhaps dual asterisk around the sarcastic comment like quotations like: **i'm being sacastic**

  • The power of the squiggly line!! for example ~My day is just getting better~

    Put it in the squigglys!

  • There's a company that made something called the "Sarcmark" but it never really caught on, mainly cause you had to pay for it, but it seems to be free from their website now. I always try and make sure that I make it so ridiculously sarcastic that they have to pick up on it, it gets old when you have to keep telling people that no, you are not being serious.
