  • once again we see an ex sample of another pratical working self defence that is not of Asian origins

  • According to recent archeological finds the first people in Portugal were the Neanderthals living in the south.

The first modern people were Phonetician traders who set up mines and a marine trade route between the British isles and the Mediterranean sea.

Greeks conquered the Phoneticians and took over their port cities and trade routes, followed by very few Romans.

The mountainous interior was very sparsely populated by Germanic Celts.

  • In fighting and high taxes weakened the Germanic rulers and caused the people to seek new leadership. This made the Muslim invasion and occupation relative easy. During the reconquest of Portugal by the young Don Alfonso Henriques many germans, french celts and swedish joined him. Even some vikings joined in exchange for promises of land.

Even though they were out numbered 100 to 1 they pushed out the Muslim invaders. It is a very interesting story and quite worthy of a well made movie.

  • lidador, dont forget the original dark short, africoid genes from the so-called iberian people that were the indigenous population before the kelts even migrated to suthern europe from north africa.

  • The Primary heritage of the Portuguese is Celtic. Most Portuguese, especially in the north, are either Celtic, Germanic most of the Roman's were in fact Barbarian tribes unified under Rome. There is very little Moor blood in the Portuguese. Moorish occupation was primarily relegated to the south of the country, they were either wiped out or fled after the Christian Reconquest of Iberia. Darker complexion Portuguese are Jewish descendants who migrated to Portugal during the Spanish inquisition.

  • cont'd.. Don't just accept what people tell you about the Portuguese. Don't get complacent, because most of it is BS geared to subjugating you. Learn it for yourself, by traveling to Portugal, all of Portugal not just the Southern resorts.

  • Bem interessante

  • Great video!!!

  • Hmmm... Interesting.

  • I'm from Portugal, there are stories of an old man, a traveling old warrior who taught people Jogo Do Pau in exchange for shelter and food. Later it became banned in areas because of gangs and the dictatorship. The martial art is now mostly practiced in the Azores, but there are various variations of the art and similar arts in the world, such as Egyptian and Crete Stick Fighting. It's just a shame so many European martial arts died out with the invention of the gun.

  • It's like I've been sayin'! Guns r 4 bitches who can't fight 1-v-1 or belong 2 gangs. U can't tell if folks can fight 1-v-1 cuz apparently most ppl have guns. Dat's how it is where I stay.

  • Guns area weapon of almost no skill. Some skill is required for Revolvers and Semi Automatic weapons, but give any a submachine gun, and they can easily kill a dozen people with no skill because of the sheer number of bullets fired. Studying a martial art for melee, not only gives you a skill, but teaches discipline.

  • Exactly. Kinda validates my comment. Thanks.

  • Awesome. I love old Western Martial Arts footage. :)

  • Interesting.

  • great video

  • Jogo do pao is beautiful. So is the Portuguese language.

    Much respect from New Orleans!

  • lol

  • Dear weapt, who said anything about BOMBING?

I'm not your trained monkey if you want to know about native american fighting styles look it up

  • I agree with you and my post wasn't directed at your comments but to others. I've read the stupid posts from that american kid and all I can say is that in the face of ignorance there's not much you can do apart from ignoring it. On the other hand, as a portuguese I hate when people from my country (or any other) feel the need to bash an entire culture just because some twat offended your national pride or whatever. I see it allover the youtube and it makes me sick.

  • All cultures have good things and bad, people just have a hard time coping with the differences...And ignorance most of the time!

  • By the way... whats the american or native american martial art???? what martial art u smarties invented?

    ahah

  • How about gerrilla warfare, scalping your ass, tomahowk throwing, mastering a bow and arrow while mounting a horse, close fighting tecniques with short knifes...should I keep going?

  • A necessidade aguça o engenho!

Fighting techniques evolve true the needs of the human being integrated in his environment and society.

Just one correction, scalping your ass, not mine for sure ;) has something done by the Europeans, particularly the French mercenary...Native Americans just copy that for plain and simple revenge.

  • I think you have some mental issues that you kneed to take care. Your "talk fighting" is much superior to mine. So I pay you 5000$ if you defeat me bare handed and me yielding a Knife, Stick or Sword? Can you, or anyone? God bless the ignorant...

  • The amrican natives where so stupid that they still had to fight with primitive weapons because intelectually they don´t evoluate so much has the portuguese machine of war at the time.

By the way, the native american where so great warriors that they win the war and there peoplw was not conquered, Their fightig systems where so good that they evoluate to modern martual arts...

    lllllllllooooooooolllllllllllll

nor even one stay for register, yes the white boys crash you.

  • Be mature and stop offending native americans! By the way, cool video. Part of my family is from the north of Portugal and I've already heard about this martial art but its the first time i actually see it.

  • No one is offending Native Americans, just trying to make some sense in our country history. Portuguese are know to be a heart full people. If you'd bother to read some "stupid" comments where made about Portuguese culture and the so Called New World in the 14 century...

  • TRADUZ ISTO NO GOOGLE PARA INGLÊS/TRANSLATE THIS IN GOOGLE TO ENGLISH: ESPETA UM PINHEIRO NO CU SEU MISCELÂNCIA DE RAÇAS! This is good portuguese from PORTUGAL!!

  • Iberia was around before the romans took it over then they called it Hispania and thats where the name espana came from. and of any race the deadliest fighters ever to walk the earth are the native americans they knew how to fight multiple attackers and they were the best at stealth and they knew how to defend against weapons when they were unarmed the only reason why the europeans beat them is because they outnumbered 10 to 1 and they had guns and cannons.

  • Of course that´s why UFC is full of Native American Champions and not Brazilian Guys that are the offspring of the Portuguese.

  • Before the Romans we had several tribes in Iberia, the one that gave birth to Portugal was the Lusos and that´s why we still call our Country Lusitania Lusos Land. The fiercest warrior to fight Roman Troops was actually a Luso Warrior called Viriato. Only by Betrayal he was killed...

  • well yeah it was me... lol

  • Well , we got the Lusos blood in vains but, also roman blood too and i'm proud about heritage from a great ancient empire of Rome . Don't you Lidador ?

  • Roman, Arab, and many others cultures are the basis for the Portuguese people.

Yes I'm proud off all of them.

  • @Tebanios yeah roman blood it's like us and half of the rest of the world

  • But why am I lecturing a 19 year old brat that insists in teaching a Portuguese about his country history, what a waste of Time. "Dar pérolas a porcos" well enlightened one suite yourself.

  • no every other culture teaches defense against weapons the asians, africans, middle east, america, and europeans except it seems the spanish or portugese werent smart enough to develop their own fighting system.

  • They were smart enough to discover America, and smart enough to kick everybody ass until the 18 century. In nowadays the smart ones are the Americans that have the atomic bomb, so much for your delusions dreams about warriors defeating in bare hands swords, knifes or spears. You need to grow up Kid...

  • Then arabians came and invaded the Iberian Peninsula and then, D.Henrique de Borgonha came in the West Crusades to free the Iberian Penisula from Muslims. He made it and got a land called Portucale, a county from Castilla. In 1129 his son (Afonso Henriques) got the independence and Portugal and Spain were one again only in the 17th century.

  • AHH NÃO! MAIS PROPAGANDA IBERISTA!?

  • portugese is a different type of spanish thousands of years ago spain and portugal was known as Iberia they were one country they were both Iberians except the northern part of spain had a group called "Basques" their martial art is zipota

  • I think you should study the history of either Portugal or Spain before going to say such a barbarity. Go ask any Portuguese (in case you haven't noticed I'm Portuguese) or Spanish if our country/culture are the same?

Iberia never existed in one unified country/nation. Actually Spain is composed by 3 kingdoms and the Basque people still fight for their independence.

  • Your argument is so logic as for me saying that USA and Canada are in the same tradition/country/region...I forgot, long before even those countries existed Portugal 900 years ago was already a nation...

Do you even know that both countries have their own language?

  • spain have basque catalan catellano galego and a few others with less importance... portugal have portuguese and mirandes.

  • die taker234532... you obviously don't know anything about european history! thousands of years ago, iberians lived in the territory of spain and celts in the territory of portugal. they both got together and formed the celtiberians, who developed the Lusitan country. romans got there, had a hard time kicking Lusitan's asses but they still got it.

  • Then, the peninsula was invaded by muslims and a West-Crusader called Henrique de Borgona came and won a county that belonged to Castilla, named Condado Portucalense. In 1129, Afonso Henriques got the independence from Castilla and Portugal was formed.

  • Since then, Portugal and Spain became one country for a short period of time in the 17th century. Four centuries later, and when these contries have evolved differently over almost a millenium, you don't have the right to come here and say that portuguese and spanish are the same. So, just stick woth your 250 year Culture, okay?

  • Excellent Margarida, very well said. A short but correct resume on our history.

    Thank's

  • the rare spanish style that i managed to find was "a mano limpia" they used basic kicks and punches against armed and unarmed assailants

  • yeah but other cultures have train to fight armed opponents when they were unarmed other systems have taught that

  • Of course and Santa Claus is real to ;)

  • yeah but how will they defend themselves if they lose their weapon or it breaks in battle?

  • If you lose or break your weapon while your adversary don´t. The best option is to run away...Or do you really think you can defend yourself against a edeged weapon (sword) or stick with empty hands???

  • I personnaly don't know, how can a rifle break unless you go hand-to hand with a tank.

  • Exactly.

  • lol hand to hand agains a tank...

the guy starts stabbing the tank, then the tank lovers its machine gun and....

  • Or so.

    watch?v=9phlBP3Xdzg

  • So what is their Hand to Hand combat style that originated in Spain or Portugal?

  • Jogo do Pau is purely portuguese. In hand to hand combat, wich is never as effective as weapons. We have a grappling system called "Galhofa" trained at the North of the country...

  • Portuguese, Spanish, French and Italian, are all Latin derived languages, as for the Germanic Languages...

  • That can't be Portugese?

  • why not ?

  • Maybe I haven't heard that much Portuguese, but it sounds like something from eastern Europe mixed with Dutch.

  • Well I am Portuguese and can assure you that, that's Portuguese Language, and those are Portuguese Soldiers from first world war training in our National Stick Fighting Martial Art, Jogo do Pau.

Feel free to watch the other videos, as you clearly sea the history line in here.

  • Always thought Portuguese sounded more like Spanish, but I guess I was wrong, or at least it doesn't sound like Spanish to me. Sounds more like Dutch in this video.

  • Uauuu... real footage from First World War training, priceless...
