  • Yes, I know, studied photo (actually, I think we met way back when at RCC, I'm a friend of Deb's), and I didn't mean posed smiles, I mean captured natural smiles, like kids have when playing in the park, etc. Your students did a beautiful job, as I said, but it has a sad tone.

  • The kids did a great job, no doubt, but I grew up in Haverstraw and we do smile there! This is slightly despressing.

    In documentary photography, the idea is to capture what is actual and what exists at a particular place and time. The students were taught to look for an emotion, gesture, expression or mood that they feel tells a story. I also grew up in Haverstraw and this essay by the kids was not intended to be depressing, but just to show the raw beauty of the human condition and their ability to see things other than what most people learn to do for the camera, which is smile.
