  • I know that it might sound a little strange in this context, but as I am designing custom iceboat I need to find out the answer to the question: What is the drag in Newtons of tha ice boat's 3 skids when sailing 60 km/h? Even rough estimation will help me ;) Well it is said that this drag is very low, and hence iceboats are very fast but I need numbers, numbers, numbers! Thanks for any help

    Kuba :)

  • @btgyachtdesign why don't you measure the surface area of the blades and do the math to figure it out yourself because ive seen your comment on like 10 vids

  • This is wild....seen nothing like this in Northen Lower Michigan!

    Thanx for the post!

  • Didn't even know that existed. Probably because I'm black and...you know...we don't do cold...or precipitation.

  • My local lake wouldn't freeze that hard.

  • Cool! No pun intended LOL

  • Nicely done Joe!

  • cool

What's the gas mileage on one of those things?

    Jus kidding!

  • Looks fun. O: wish you could do this in hawaii

  • Thats sooo sweet!

  • this is freakin cool- never knew it existed

  • Wow, this looks fun! Was this on a lake?

I don't think we could do this here. We ahve a wide river but its probably covered in 2 feet of snow.

  • Yep, lots of fun. This was on a bay.

  • wow look at that horizon. Looks like you had fun. What software do you use to edit your vids?

    Will

  • Thanks! Final Cut Pro.

  • one. do you use a mac?

two. is it true that in order to use final cut pro u need to buy this helabon expensive chip or it won't work?

thee. I got a macbook pro would final cut pro work on it?

    thanks

  • 1. yes

    2. Don't think so because...

    3. it should work on you MBP as long as you have enough free space on it.

If you have an older macbook pro you can try Final Cut HD. It's an easier version and unless you're doing video production professionally, you may not need FCP.

  • That is so awesome Joe!! I bet you had an amazing time!!! I didn't know about this sport, of course coming from a very warm place with no snow or ice things like this are no so popular :P

  • Where you're from they just call it sailing. :^P

    Thanks!

  • wow this looks great joe! and like a whole lot of fun. cold but fun.

  • Was definitely a blast. Thank you my friend.

  • Yeah, we do this down here in Georgia year-round! LOL Right!!

    Nice work Joe!

Were you out there for the heck of it, or was this part of a bigger project you are doing?

    Either way, it's great stuff.

  • Iceboating is a pretty big deal in this town. I've been wanting to shoot footage since last winter. Got there a little late on Sunday and I wasn't there 5 minute before someone asked if I wanted to go for a ride with the camera. It was absolutely amazing. I'll definitely be shoot more. There are a lot of good stories out there too. It's it like a whole culture and should make for an interesting little doc.

    Thanks Dale.

  • Cool!

  • Nice footage...like others I didn't know of this sport.

  • I'm glad I got to introduce some people to it. Expect more footage and some stories too.

  • that was brilliant. i didnt know such things existed. really well shot and edited joe, but i wouldnt expect anything less from you x

  • Thank you Janey!

  • mikma was here

  • You do the coolest stuff.

  • lol.... sometimes. This was definitely one of the cooler things I've done.

  • wow that looks like a lot of fun. thos move fast!

    -Blair

  • Yeah, the boat I was on did around 50 MPH but it's not unheard of for some boats to go around 90+!

  • thats way too low to the ground for me to be going that fast! lol

  • I missed this :( I'm sorry. This is so amazing, even without the HD the quality is outstanding. This sport looks insane!!! I love the editing and the shots you got. You rule Joe. Hahaha I love the guys that ran outta wind!!!

  • Don't be sorry. Technically you still saw it the day it was posted. That's the rule. :^P

Thank you. It was insane. Some of the shots I think I just got lucky.

  • HD is too slow, I like this.

  • Nice! Now I want to try!

  • Shouldn't be a problem where you're from.

  • I didnt know they had boats for ice! :)

  • Yeah, Crazy right?

  • That looked like great fun :)

  • It was a blast.

  • your life is much cooler than mine. i'm making pierogies and i can't remember if the i goes before the e or not?

  • Ah yes but I'm hungry and I wish I has some peir... perogies... I think it's perogies.

  • Looks like a freakin blast, but ya... I'm not sure I could handle the temp. Holy frozen ass Batman...

  • Froze a lot more than my ass. But it was worth it.

  • I thought it was only in the midwest

  • I know it's big in the midwest but for some reason this little bay is famous for it. People come from pretty far away to ice boat there.

  • I bet it was difficult to film while you were on the boat. You got some good shots though. Nice!

  • REALLY difficult. Half the time I wasn't sure what I was shooting. And I was worried about dropping the camera too. It was a pretty wild experience.

    Thanks!

  • Holy fun time!

  • Totally.

  • This was really well done, especially in less than 8 hours. Loved the ending, too. The shingle getting going was classic.

  • Yeah, I love the ending too. As I was shooting it I knew how I was going to edit it. I almost started laughing when he said it was the first boat he built. To his credit though it got moving pretty good out there.

  • awesome joe! I love the cuts on this, felt like i was on the ice! u'd be great @ xgames, lol

  • Thanks Flee! Next time sit on a block of ice and watch it in front of an open freezer for a more authentic feeling. :^P

  • tell ya how it turns out!

** runs to chip ice out of pond**

  • Very cool video Joe. I didn't know they did that around here.

As for your comment to youtube about HD, what format did you upload the video in? I think they only do HD on certain codecs. For example for me mpeg2 won't go to HD but mpeg4 will.

  • Thanks Jason. Bellport is famous for ice boats. You should check it out.

It's H.264. They HDed my last video. It also worked right away on Vimeo. Look great over there. Putting a link in description.

  • Hey Joe...Thanks for the ride! Beautiful video.

    Sheri~

  • Thanks Sheri!

  • looks pretty cool

  • Freezing

  • Cool.....or should I say COLD?

  • lol... very cold!

  • Looks fun, dangerous and cold.

  • Yes, yes and holy crap yes.

  • looks like that was a LOT of fun! very cool :)

  • Very cold actually. :^) I though I was going to lose a few fingers.

  • looks amazing! i dont understand it though, how is it on ice w/o breaking and moving? just the wind?

  • You mean when people aren't in them? They either lay them down or drill an anchor into the ice.

  • awesome, i wanna try!

  • They're out there whenever the Bay is frozen, especially on the weekends. Worth the trip from Brooklyn.

  • Looks like great fun!

  • It was crazy. I didn't expect to be getting on one.

  • Woooohooo that looks like a blast.

  • I was amazing. Can't wait to go again.

  • what a blast! Glad you didn't fall off - although that would have made for some great "extras' LOL

    great filming

  • I was more worried about dropping my camera.

    Thanks!

  • is looks cold

  • Coldest I've ever been in my life.

  • That video gives us great impressions of doing this.

    Awesome.

It looks like so much fun.

    :)

  • Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.

  • Wow, the sky looks really beautiful at certain points. :)

  • Yeah, I got lucky with that. Sun was about to set.

  • Looks like a good time in L. I.

  • It was a blast.

  • Looks like you had fun, Joe.. A piece of advice though, if the other guy is wearing a helmet, maybe you should too. Glad you didn't get "boomed".

Looking at all that ice in LI, I wonder what happened to Global Warming -errrr- I mean Climate Change?

  • Most people were wearing helmets out there. I definitely wasn't prepared but I couldn't say no when they asked if I wanted to go fro a ride.

  • That looks like it would be so much fun! It'd require some safety precautions with all those people out there...Good times, if not a bit chilly.

  • Felt like 40 below on the boat. Couldn't feel my fingers when it was over.
