  • The more I consider this song, the more I see why it's a classic of its kind. And Rosanne's version is the best to come along, ever. The extraordinary, lavishly-produced recording with Springsteen is rightfully admired, but I also love this live rendition, done on an empty stage in an infinitely restrained, moving arrangement with only one (inspired) acoustic guitar. Two people making truly unforgettable music.

  • Wow, cackling hens! That's a bit mean spirited, I though the reference was to the hosts of the show, although I will admit it's the worst version of this song I've heard so far. Rosanne topped her father with Flat Top Box though, this just wasn't one of the right songs from the "List", to try. : -)

  • "you should know baby" - is that not kind of insulting to say to Rosanne Cash? I love this song - and I really love her music. I get annoyed every time I think if of that lame comment.

  • Cackling hens...funny, I was thinking the same thing. I do think it is a man's song though.

  • So beautiful, so true. "lost love, loneliness..."

  • Well done and produced! Mr. Don Gibson would approve! This has kind of a folk flavor, I enjoyed!

  • Wow, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree...she looks just like her old man!

  • Dog she's still beautiful and wow a great voice.

  • one hellava guitarist

  • THIS was just plain bad. Pretty sure don gibson i rolling over in he's grave

  • I like Rosanne Cash but I do not prefer this "soft" version of this Gibson classic. I agree the two bimbos doing the intro were ridiculous though.

  • I like Rosanne Cash but I do not prefer this "soft" version of this Gibson classic.

  • "Cackling hens" just about sums it up. Kathy Lee Gifford talked over Rosanne Cash twice.

  • Seems our great generation is starting to look back at that last great generation.....and finding lots of gems...I'd call that wisdom...

  • absolutely agree with morrison elvis - kathie lee is insufferable, flat out insufferable, just STFU, you stupid hussy.

prefer the album performance of this song. gotta say there sound to be many weak vocal and guitar moments in this live version. her voice seems off key repeatedly. i enjoy her but do think they likely tweak her quite a bit in the studio to help her sound better than she naturally does.

  • I agree , Elvis!!!!!

  • The best performance of this song I found was for the WSJ, also recorded during the promo tour for the new CD. The technical setup was superior, and the atmosphere is intimate, like a small club with a small audience, and very relaxed. Sadly, I can no longer find it on YouTube. The album itself is well-produced (thanks to John) and has simple, very spare, arrangements, so I like it very much. Still, I'd pay again for the same songs with _only_ Rosanne and John (no other "big names" needed).

  • What could be better than this simple version of a classic country song! Just Roseanne, a guitar, and a little harmony. It is now on my own "list". Loved it.

  • Roseanne is like her dad in that she's only interested in the song, and feels every word.

  • were those tv interview gals on coke?

  • Dad would be PROUD ROSANNA! :D

  • her voice is made for live performances. Every song she sings is perfect.

  • doin her dad proud,,,,

  • best version ever, even better that with springsteen.

Her huband, or whatever he his did an outstanding job of playing to match her voice and his voice part never overshawdowed her, Perfect singer and a greater back up who played so well. It was much enjoyed

  • Beautifully done.... best of all the other vocalists. Thank you.

  • The only thing better about this version is the guitar riff.

  • I had the opportunity to see her at the premiere performances for the list St Ann's warehouse brooklyn. great show. and this one, is an artist taking a chance on live tv, not lip sync to a track. she took a chance on a vocal embellishment. sorry you didn't like it, but it is a real moment. I really love her voice. am now taking the time to listen to the past hit versions of the tunes that make up The List. she does them proud.

  • I never listened to her or owned one of her CDs before but I bought this one because Johnny Cash created the "List" and I wanted to hear what she did with the songs. I really like the CD--so, all I can say is "give her another chance."

  • I was so moved by her performance on Don Imus' show that I was hoping I'd find it on YouTube.

But this, while the performing is great, is spoiled by nearly two minutes of cackling hens. Do those two bimbos run the Today Show these days? Awful! Maybe someone will post the Imus appearance, which also included 'Long Black Veil' and 'Heartaches By the Number", plus a quiet and interesting interview in a relaxed setting. Or post this, but lose those hens!

  • Nobody listens to Imus anymore.

  • @MorrisonElvis Check the ratings. Also, they WATCH it on FoxBus, which has higher ratings than CNBC since Imus started on that network. It's the best forum for music.

  • Rosanne, not Rosanna
