This song became part of our family tradition every Thanksgiving as we drove up to my sisters for our turkey dinner. She lived an hour away and to this day my kids remember this song.
In the summer of '75, we went to the Arden Fair Mall and watched the movie I don't know how many times! I still have the record! Long live You Tube!!!
Well... this story isn't just funny, it's a about a whole way of living. Are you a free individual, able to live life as your soul tells you to, or are you beholden to "society," needing to live according the rules that it decides define a "decent" and "worthwhile" human being?
My personal tradition every Thanksgiving since I was a kid: listening to Alice's restaurant, turkey dinner, and after dinner watching the movie Plane,trains, and automobiles. I am now passing this tradition to my kid although I had to explain to him what "the Draft" was. Awsome job with this video.
many thanks for putting this together. Now way I could give this a 'thumbs down!' i little better audio would be cool but hey, I'm happier than I was before I watched it so...... There You Go!
Last 2 years I haven't been able to find the movie Anywhere On Tv! Tow Thanksgiving Days in a row - with no Alice's Restaurant! WTH!
Thanks again, did my heart good to hear it and I shared it with my facebook friends too.
Yeah! There was a radio station in the 70's that played this song,and this song only, all day long over and over on Thanksgiving Day! Wow! Brings me back.
This is so great!! My Thanksgiving is complete!! I listen to this every Thanksgiving (have been for over 20 years); but this is an extra special treat!! Thank you!!!
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Yep, sure brings back memories. I used to be able to sing this word for word, but my memory isn't long enough any more.....LOL One of the greatest songs ever written in music history. A thousand thumbs up.
18:37 video: music and movie clips of satirical talking blues song "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" written and sung by Arlo Guthrie (born July 10, 1947).
This is one of the best pieces of comedy of the 1960s, pretty much is worth all the episodes of the Smothers Brothers and Flip Wilson put together... "Just a case of American blind justice..." lol!
There actually was / is (?) an Alice's restaurant in Stockbridge Mass. ( Probably started after this song came out to cash in ) ,, but I went the for a burger and fries,, it really is around the back of a store and just about a 1/2 mile from the RR trax
My father in law used to play me this song whenever I asked him to play me music. I miss him. Rest in Peace, my friend. We think of you every time we hear this song :)
Have played this song every thanksgiving for the pass 30 or more years .Visited the church where the movie was filmed last summer in Great Barrington Mass.
It might be funny now, but it was just like this back in the late 60s. They had us all running around in our underware from one station to the next during the physical, all the time yelling at us. Some guys really freaked out. If you pass, you go to Nam.
I wish young people today were as involved in politics as that generation (just before mine). Of course, the chance that you or a close friend had a great chance to have your ass shot up in Nam FOR NO GOOD REASON was a great spur to activism.
@jabel5 Some of us are^.^ I got tear gassed at an Iraq war protest in 2003, among other activism stuff. It's hard, because most people my age (I'm 25) don't really think there's anything wrong right now. I don't agree^.^
Most Amrericans want to KILL, KILL, KiLL, men women and children in other countries in wars based on lies; most Americans can suck my dick, thank goodness for Arlo Guthrie and his father for being standup!
This song inspired a serial killer to torture and murder little girls. The killer played this song to the entire courtroom, with the family of the victims and a surviving victim listening. Of course, after doing this, he received the DEATH PENALTY. I doubt Arlo Guthrie intended to inspire such violence, but he did.
Iam 38 years old and my deceiced mother and my living father are still the biggest part of my existance due to this "biblical friend of exiistance" this is as biblical as some of us 70"s children will ever recieve the nuturing we deserve!!!! Like many people, this song has been a Thanksgiving tradition in my family for many, many years. Actually got to see Arlo in concert and perform "Alice's Restaurant" live a couple of years ago. Such a fun, hilarious and wonderful man. Wish I could have met him.
He was wonderful in the Macy's Parade today but they should have made his bit longer. Those other musical acts were on screen for an excruciatingly long time..
thanks for sharing this and making it available; forever this will be a Thanksgiving day tradition; We used to sit around in our fraternity at Cornell in 1969, with one person playing the guitar and the some of us singing along;
@gratefulfunksquier69 That is wonderful! I was 13 myself when I first saw Arlo in the Woodstock movie (at a film revival). I think that was about the same age I saw the "Alice's Restaurant" movie on Thanksgiving that year. :)
This is a Thanksgiving tradition with our family.

Oh well.
Happy Thanksgiving!

thanks for sharing this and making it available; forever this will be a Thanksgiving day tradition; We used to sit around in our fraternity at Cornell in 1969, with one person playing the guitar and the some of us singing along;

@gratefulfunksquier69 That is wonderful! I was 13 myself when I first saw Arlo in the Woodstock movie (at a film revival). I think that was about the same age I saw the "Alice's Restaurant" movie on Thanksgiving that year. :)
