  • Well... this story isn't just funny, it's a about a whole way of living. Are you a free individual, able to live life as your soul tells you to, or are you beholden to "society," needing to live according the rules that it decides define a "decent" and "worthwhile" human being?

  • Would that station happen to be KTURD?

  • bad voice audio

  • My family and I have a tradition of listening to this song every thanksgiving on a local radio station at noon. A tradition I intend to pass along.

  • @darkrai49 Mine, too! Since 1967...first Thanksgiving in California. Thanks for the memories................

  • AHHHHH Now I can go on with Thanksgiving dinner!

  • My personal tradition every Thanksgiving since I was a kid: listening to Alice's restaurant, turkey dinner, and after dinner watching the movie Plane, trains, and automobiles. I am now passing this tradition to my kid although I had to explain to him what "the Draft" was. Awsome job with this video.

  • WZZO in allentown PA plays this on thanksgiving 2 times a day. Check their site.

  • that a place we need to day were we all live as 1 white black purple hell what ever color

  • I love this! xD I found it on my mom's iPod and decided to look it up...

  • Is it true that the reason the original recording is not to be found on Youtube is because of the reference to fa==ots?

  • FANTASTIC!

  • Yeah! There was a radio station in the 70's that played this song, and this song only, all day long over and over on Thanksgiving Day! Wow! Brings me back.

  • This is so great!! My Thanksgiving is complete!! I listen to this every Thanksgiving (have been for over 20 years); but this is an extra special treat!! Thank you!!!

  • Thank you Arlo and thank you jguth3

  • Thanks for video. I just watched the 1969 movie again and it brought back a lot of memories (I missed the Vietnam draft by 1 year).

Fun to see Arlo revise the song 40 years later.

If I remember correctly, he plays himself.

  • @ Jose Baez...another epic faii

  • @ JoseBAEZ:

    Jackass!

  • My mom played this for me when I was a kid...now my oldest is 4, and I play it for her.

Classic representation of an amazing era, that I wish I was around for!

Thankful for access to great old tunes/movie and shows!

  • This is one of the best pieces of comedy of the 1960s, pretty much is worth all the episodes of the Smothers Brothers and Flip Wilson put together... "Just a case of American blind justice..." lol!

  • 43 people sang that to a shrink and got kicked out...

  • I could write a novel on how much I love this song. Or at least 18:37 worth. :)

  • this is very well-done (the editing and all)

  • your husband is such a wonderful storyteller. thank you for posting this!

  • ... 43 people don't like Alice... or her restaurant... what a shame...

  • 37, 8X10 colored glossy photos with circles and arrows.......

  • There actually was / is (?) an Alice's restaurant in Stockbridge Mass. ( Probably started after this song came out to cash in ) ,, but I went the for a burger and fries,, it really is around the back of a store and just about a 1/2 mile from the RR trax

  • My father in law used to play me this song whenever I asked him to play me music. I miss him. Rest in Peace, my friend. We think of you every time we hear this song :)

  • accidentally clicked "dislike". How ashamed I am.

  • Have played this song every thanksgiving for the pass 30 or more years .Visited the church where the movie was filmed last summer in Great Barrington Mass.

  • hey_ÅnÿõnË_wâñÑÅ_chåt_wIth_mé_Í_féêl_s0_lönely_t0dãÿ♪

  • Boom mic at 13:08.

  • wonder who the 42 thumbs down morons were? hahaha!! CLASIC NOTHIN LIKE IT!!!!! AWSOME POST GREAT JOB !!

  • wonder who the 42 thumbs down morons were? hahaha!!

  • Great job and great memories. Thanks for posting. We used to listen to this every Thanksgiving on the way to my folks house.

  • this happened to floyd my great grand father he died im pretty sure

  • heard this just about every time i went to my grand parents

  • It might be funny now, but it was just like this back in the late 60s. They had us all running around in our underware from one station to the next during the physical, all the time yelling at us. Some guys really freaked out. If you pass, you go to Nam.

  • @Flashbackjacko , yes mate i was lucky i missed out, i had no intention of going anyway, what if one day they started a war & nobody came?

  • Thank you so much for putting this video and the movie clips together!

I enjoyed this thoroughly...blessings and positive vibes to you and the Folkslinger <3

  • One of the best songs ever--and THE BEST anti-war song ever.

  • this would have to be, one of the best, songs ever

  • and ...to add...this version is just too funny!

  • hidden away in memories until it was mentioned today; fabulous memory from the past that will go on and on!

  • I wish young people today were as involved in politics as that generation (just before mine). Of course, the chance that you or a close friend had a great chance to have your ass shot up in Nam FOR NO GOOD REASON was a great spur to activism.

  • @jabel5 Some of us are^.^ I got tear gassed at an Iraq war protest in 2003, among other activism stuff. It's hard, because most people my age (I'm 25) don't really think there's anything wrong right now. I don't agree^.^

  • Well hell I'm 60 and I still remember them all!

  • I was on the Group W bench and I still went to Vietnam.

  • Most Amrericans want to KILL, KILL, KiLL, men women and children in other countries in wars based on lies; most Americans can suck my dick, thank goodness for Arlo Guthrie and his father for being standup!

  • Awesome familia, mafia connections, than you for your inspiration!

  • That's amazing that he is an old man now, because he was always the young one and his dad was the old!

  • I had forgotten to teach this song to my son. Which I must remedy.

  • @philipem01 HAHAHA...that's what I'm doing...right now :D

  • @philipem01 Youngest Son turned 18 , so this is my gift to him. lmao ( & 'They' wonder why my kids hare so warped.)

  • @pagenprincess13 My old man just put me on to this, I love it.

  • o he looks so old

on the most videos on youtube he is much younger

    we all get older

  • I love this!

  • This song inspired a serial killer to torture and murder little girls. The killer played this song to the entire courtroom, with the family of the victims and a surviving victim listening. Of course, after doing this, he received the DEATH PENALTY. I doubt Arlo Guthrie intended to inspire such violence, but he did.

  • @torpedofish Or maybe the guy just liked the song.

Even psychopaths can like popular songs.

IF one goes from a funny song about littering to murder/torture of children, I'm thinking there was some other factor that intervened in between.

  • 42 people had to sit on the group W bench.

  • 42 people didn't get what they wanted at Alice's Restauraunt.

  • Iam 38 years old and my deceiced mother and my living father are still the biggest part of my existance due to this "biblical friend of exiistance" this is as biblical as some of us 70"s children will ever recieve the nuturing we deserve!!!! All my Love & Light to the Guthrie family!!!!!!!!!!!! Peace to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I heard this song on Thanksgiving on the radio. It's amazing. Just the way it's written and sung, all the expression...Hilarious.

  • @ SuperLiftRick:

Oh my gosh, I thought my small town in Mississippi was the only one that did that. I'd ask other people I met if they played Alice's Restaurant on Thanksgiving and they'd all look at me like I was crazy or something. Glad to know it's tradition to play on Thanksgiving in other places too.

  • sweet

  • It plays EVERY Thanksgiving here in PA. on local radio stations.

  • @SuperLiftRick It makes me very happy to know that. I live in Florida now but I grew up in Philadelphia, PA. And I remember they not only played it every Thanksgiving on local radio stations-but they showed the film of the same name on tv as well. :)

  • @faeryquene Thats right. They still do. Pierre plays it 3X every Thanksgiving on WMMR. Check this out. Greetings! I wanted to let you know what time on Thanksgiving I'll be playing "Alice's Restaurant". There will be three playings: 10am, Noon, and 2pm. The noon playing will be the updated version and at 2pm on vinyl! I hope you can spend some of your Thanksgiving with me!

    Cheers,

    Pierre

  • @hoosdad463 Thank you soo much Pierre! Brings back happy childhood Philly memories of that time. :)

  • kidjon: hippies have the intellect to NOT have blind faith in the government and to know that it is patriotic to exercise a Constitutional right : Freedom of Speech!

"Without Freedom of Thought there can be no such Thing as Wisdom; and no such Thing as Public Liberty, without Freedom of Speech" (Benjamin Franklin).

  • always love these stinky hippies that hate the US military and the US.

  • @KK96703 Does anyone even care? Yes they did support Freedom of Speech and thats the only respectable thing they did! Go back to the forest you weed smoking, unself-reliant, disorganized failure.

  • Yes! thanks elvira4990!

  • Like many people, this song has been a Thanksgiving tradition in my family for many, many years. Actually got to see Arlo in concert and perform "Alice's Restaurant" live a couple of years ago. Such a fun, hilarious and wonderful man. Wish I could have met him.

He was wonderful in the Macy's Parade today but they should have made his bit longer. Those other musical acts were on screen for an excruciatingly long time..

    Oh well.

    Happy Thanksgiving!
