The short answer is that love involves two types of energies, one called enthalpy or heat energy and another called entropy or transformational energy, the latter being loosely related to the mental connection of the pair, the former to the physical connection of the pair. These two energies compete, in a sense, such that their mathematical sum equates to what is called free energy, a measure of whether or not your relationship is working in the long run or not.
