Authorized by law means Article 1 Section 8(Powers granted to Congress): Paragraph 1) "The Congress SHALL have the power... TO PAY THE DEBT" Shall is a legal absolute.

Paragraph 2) "To borrow money on the credit of the United States;"

Congress handles the debt. End of story.

It says, "The validity of the public debt of the United States AS AUTHORIZED BY LAW... shall not be questioned." There's no reason to default. All the President has to do is pick up the phone and have Tiny Tim cut a check to pay the interest on the debt. Problem solved. If there's a default, it's because the President and the Secretary didn't do their job, i.e. CUT THE CHECK on the interest. The same is true of SSI payments, the soldiers and veterans. This is a non issue.

This guy is an idiot. Obama should use the 14th amendment because this is the exactly sort of thing it was created to prevent. And guess what? There is no basis for anyone to actually sue because no party was wronged. The house will surly impeach him but the senate will not convict and a president must put the constitution and the good of the nation ahead of politics.

@Martian74 Democrats never refused to increase the debt before & the only reason the repubs are is because the last election only favored them because they promnised too. The 14th amendment does not give Obama the power to circumnavigate Congress, we are a republic not a dictatorship.
