In all the years I've been studying the Near East and working with Egyptologists, however, I have never met a black Egyptologist. I've often wondered why there are so few. As many brilliant black scholars as there are, I can't understand why so few of them specialize in Egypt and the Near East.

I have friends who have moved on to get there graduate degrees, when applying as a anthropologist or archeologist those institutions and there pecking oder are controlled by whites. I cannot speak for the institution you mentioned, but I'm well familiar with the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago, which is one of the world's leading centers for the study of the ancient Near East. Racism is definitely not a problem there. Both the staff and the students come from all backgrounds. One's skin color is irrelevant to any dissertation, so if what you say of the above-mentioned institution is true, that institution is an aberration.

I don't know a lot about him because he's outside my own sphere of the ancient Near East, but I know of him because he came to Chicago in the early 1900s to study art (I live in Chicago). I am directly involved with the museum and specifically the Egyptian exhibit at the O.I., and I am well acquainted with some of the professional staff. All I can say is none of the people there evidence racism. If some students perceive that there, it's only in their minds. The O.I. is one of the world's most prestigious and respected institutions for a good reason. I have two college degrees myself and I can say from experience that much the same is true of those two colleges--no racism.
If a student has a hard time finding a job upon receiving a degree or finds it difficult to defend his or her dissertation in peer-review, racism is not to blame. In the former, there is either no position available or the student isn't qualified. In the latter, there is something flawed in the student's research. With respect, I find cries of racism to be an excuse, not an all-inclusive reality. If this is true of a college, that college is irrefutably in the minority and needs addressing.
Finally, as to McWhorter. I find the term "token black" to be objectionable, even though I'm a white guy. The color of his skin is completely irrelevant to his research and body of work. I have never read anything in his work or heard anything in his lectures that would lead one to a fair conclusion of "tokenism" because nothing of the sort exists in his work. He's a linguist who happens to be black, but the black part should be immaterial to any serious student.

It was this classical order that the Romans adopted so heavily and spread throughout the Mediterranean. We can say with complete authority the population was mixed. I don't mean pasty white guys like I were there, but dark-skinned Caucasoids like the Tuthmosid line of kings. One of the great kings of Dynasty 12, Senusret III, was from deep in the south and may have been black. Ramesses II was probably fairly light, as evidenced by his reddish hair. This mixed population produced one of the greatest civilizations of all time. This is why I stress that race doesn't matter.

One final note on this race business. I have to be fair. I'm no happier with some of the stuff you've written, hoplite1766, which I missed before. That's why I'm opting out of debating race. But do you really put stock in these supposed "IQ" tests? As a former educator, I can tell you that there would be no fair way to test the IQ of a Bushman in the same way you would test an American. It is completely unrealistic. I dislike Eurocentrism as much as Afrocentrism.

mrabdullah71, I consider McWhorter's book The Power of Babel to be one of the finest linguistic treatments for the layman. McWhorter is both highly intelligent and approachable. In all the years I've been studying the Near East and working with Egyptologists, however, I have never met a black Egyptologist. I've often wondered why there are so few. As many brilliant black scholars as there are, I can't understand why so few of them specialize in Egypt and the Near East.

@kmtsesh I can answer that question kmtsesh. I have a simple undergraduate degree from a respected school in Indianapolis, In Martin University which is a private college. I have friends who have moved on to get there graduate degrees, when applying as a anthropologist or archeologist those institutions and there pecking oder are controlled by whites. Question the pecking order, do a dissertation that is not of there liking your life will become a living hell. You stay within their confines.

I cannot speak for the institution you mentioned, but I'm well familiar with the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago, which is one of the world's leading centers for the study of the ancient Near East. Racism is definitely not a problem there. Both the staff and the students come from all backgrounds. One's skin color is irrelevant to any dissertation, so if what you say of the above-mentioned institution is true, that institution is an aberration.

I missed probably most of the earlier posts that caused it all, and I don't have all of the information. What's more, I hate turning ancient history into a race debate. If it's the same J.A. Rodgers I'm thinking of, he was indeed one of the great black scholars. I don't know a lot about him because he's outside my own sphere of the ancient Near East, but I know of him because he came to Chicago in the early 1900s to study art (I live in Chicago). This man had no formal higher education but had a huge impact. I think his most famous book is Nature Knows No Color-Line. I'm not sure if this is the same man you mean, but it's who I thought of.

If you can't think of a single decent white scholar, you clearly have not read much. Or a decent Egyptian or Pakistani scholar, or a Japanese scholar. These and more have contributed greatly to our knowledge of ancient Egypt. Black scholars are not very active in Egyptology, but the linguist John McWhorter is a black man and is one of the finest in his field. Instead of getting so mired in race issues, how about opening your mind?

I am directly involved with the museum and specifically the Egyptian exhibit at the O.I., and I am well acquainted with some of the professional staff. All I can say is none of the people there evidence racism. If some students perceive that there, it's only in their minds. The O.I. is one of the world's most prestigious and respected institutions for a good reason. I have two college degrees myself and I can say from experience that much the same is true of those two colleges--no racism.

If a student has a hard time finding a job upon receiving a degree or finds it difficult to defend his or her dissertation in peer-review, racism is not to blame. In the former, there is either no position available or the student isn't qualified. In the latter, there is something flawed in the student's research. With respect, I find cries of racism to be an excuse, not an all-inclusive reality. If this is true of a college, that college is irrefutably in the minority and needs addressing.

Finally, as to McWhorter. I find the term "token black" to be objectionable, even though I'm a white guy. The color of his skin is completely irrelevant to his research and body of work. I have never read anything in his work or heard anything in his lectures that would lead one to a fair conclusion of "tokenism" because nothing of the sort exists in his work. He's a linguist who happens to be black, but the black part should be immaterial to any serious student.
